Just for context, this is a repost because my previous post was taken down. Yes this is my video, I just didn’t realize I needed to respond to the bot to confirm this was my video.

Did he try to lie or was he honest when you filled the accident?

636

u/Dry_Lock8245 2d ago

He yelled at me that he had his turn signal on as if that implied he was right to do what he did

284

u/Keensworth 2d ago

Good thing you had a dashcam

238

u/sweetenedpecans 2d ago

Yeah, idiots tend to think throwing on their turn signal one second before they move means they immediately have the right of way. Pisses me off to no end. It’s a signal of where you want and intend to go, not a pass to do whatever you want!

93

u/nopuse 2d ago

If they use the turn signal, they treat it as "I have to do this before turning," not "I should use this to signal to other drivers what I'm going to do." Signaling as you're turning or changing lanes helps nobody. So frustrating.

41

u/fantasynerd92 2d ago

Had a guy recently turned his signal on for 1 blink in front of my spouse, who is a new driver. Spouse thought he just made a mistake, and then the guy changed lanes in front of my spouse! Luckily, there was no crash, but it freaked my spouse out.

7

u/CindysandJuliesMom 2d ago

You should have three blinks prior to making a lane change or turning, this is time to allow everyone to know what you intend to do.

10

u/catechizer 2d ago

Prior to starting to slow down for the turn is best, so people know you're about to be braking, and why.

1

u/Canadian_mk11 1d ago

It's not actually called a "turn signal", but an "indicator" for that very reason - using it means you're indicating you are going to go a direction other than immediately forward.

35

u/gollygoshdarndang 2d ago

It is remarkable how common this is if you frequent subs like this one for a while. I don't know if they truly believe that indicating gives them the right of way, or if they are aware that they are in the wrong but cannot bring themselves to accept accountability.

15

u/manawydan-fab-llyr 2d ago

More often than not, they're aware.

Take a read in local or other driving related subs and count how many statements like "when I put on my turn signal, I'm telling you, not asking permission," that you find.

2

u/permanent_priapism 2d ago

when I put on my turn signal, I'm telling you, not asking permission

This is not incorrect.

2

u/manawydan-fab-llyr 2d ago

Yes.

My point was that there are way too many OTHER people who DO have this attitude.

16

u/fastlane37 2d ago

"I said 'good luck everyone' when I turned, so I did my part. It's on you, you should have had better luck."

15

u/DntCllMeWht 2d ago

I had an old lady do this to me in broad daylight. She used the same defense while the cop was writing her a ticket. At least he told her that using your turn signal didn't give you the right of way. Fucking people man.

19

u/Ok-Heart-570 2d ago

I was a passenger (in the back seat) when I was 19, in the car with my mom and her friend. We were at a red light, that had been red for a while already and my mom starts saying "Oh, Oh, oh!" So I looked around for who's about to get in an accident, when BAM! Hit from behind.

It was an older man who said "I couldn't tell how fast you were going." Sir, we were at a red light, how fast do you usually go through them?

3

u/Warcraft_Fan 2d ago

What an idiot, thinks turn signal gives him the right of way?

1

u/RelevantJellyfish891 1d ago

Didn’t even look like he had the turn signal on anyway. Turning from a non turning lane, and still doesn’t give right away

-51

u/virtualuman 2d ago edited 9h ago

Just like you didn't know you should slow down while approaching an intersection where you cant see around a car in front of you?

For all the downvoters how many accidents have you been in the last 10 years?

Me: 1 and I live in LA! Pedestrians crossing when they shouldn't, cars running lights, you name it, I will slowdown if I cannot see around a vehicle to make sure the road is clear. Im not surprised so many think their right a way means what it used to, once upon a time. Good luck to you all! You're going to need it driving blind!

21

u/oncelostbutnowfound 2d ago

Watch out for this dude on the road. Slowing down in the left lane because he can’t see someone who shouldn’t be turning anyway.

29

u/Dry_Lock8245 2d ago

No. You don’t. That makes you just as bad as the red car for the people behind you

0

u/virtualuman 9h ago

Probably becuase to you, slowing down means slamming on the breaks. But reality will check you, until commonsense sinks in. I dont run into cars making lefts, legally or illegally! 🤣🤣

1

u/Dry_Lock8245 6h ago

You’ve definitely rear-ended at least 3 times I’m willing to bet lmao

165

u/jarnokee963 3d ago

Atleast he got the full blow from his passenger after the crash.

30

u/Signature_Illegible 2d ago

I was wondering what sketchy shit was going on after they stopped..

232

u/SisypheanDreamer 3d ago

You did a great job of trying to avoid it and minimize the damage!

54

u/Extension-Addition84 2d ago

Ain't no danger if you can't see the danger.

2

u/virtualuman 9h ago

He who files through an unprotected left intersection gets.. well as you see, what they get.

98

u/agarret83 2d ago

I know you didn’t completely avoid contact but this was still great defensive driving

31

u/YuRi0_86 2d ago

what sucks the most is that those people never learn. it’s always one of two things: the accident happens and they try and blame you, or it’s narrowly avoided and they go on about their day driving in the same manner everywhere.

everyone loses, it sucks ass.

59

u/trixicat64 2d ago

I think the main problem is that he didn't yield to oncoming traffic

37

u/Sunsprint 2d ago

Dude this exact same thing happened to me, except I was on a bicycle :-(

24

u/Dry_Lock8245 2d ago

Goddamn, hope you’re ok now? No long lasting injuries?

31

u/Sunsprint 2d ago

Yeah, just a broken bicycle and a $3k check. I got a sprained wrist and pulled muscle in my back for the trouble too, but those healed.

14

u/Dry_Lock8245 2d ago

That’s good to hear you’re all good for the most part

55

u/bottlecandoor 2d ago

You did nothing wrong as a car driver.  If I was in a motorcycle I would have used a little more defensive driving and slowed a little because you are late to the light change and any crash can be fatal. There is also a car blinding the line of sight for oncoming traffic. This setup is when most intersection accidents happen. Rule #1 of motorcycles, everyone is trying to kill you.

10

u/Adorable-Lake-8818 2d ago

Ride safe man!

15

u/Unlikely-Dog325 2d ago

That was a great reaction time tbh, bro slammed on the brakes immediately

3

u/offwing10 2d ago

Not surprised it’s Ontario

-72

u/WKU-Alum 2d ago

Not blaming you, nothing you could do. Hems 100% at fault for failing to yield the right of way.

However, I keep seeing you say he turned from the right lane, it looks to me that he came from a middle/turn lane? What am I missing?

15

u/Dry_Lock8245 2d ago

If you look closely and slow the video, he actually cuts through the turning lane at an angle that you would only get from turning in the right lane

29

u/Adorable-Lake-8818 2d ago edited 2d ago

You're missing perspective. It's not your fault, you probably don't usually look at things like this. It's the old "patient's right or patient's left" perspective for the medical field. They were coming from *THEIR* right hand lane, and decided to take a left... their lane that is meant for *ONLY* turning right... and they decided to take a left. If you look at about the 0:02 second mark, you can clearly see the red (wrong doer's) right hand headlight on the left of the car that's waiting to turn left. The only way you'd get that affect is if their in their *VERY* right hand lane (geometry). Then at 0:04 they pop out in front of the car (you can see their turning) like "Oh hey! Just a second, I'm going to just slip right in front and through... just a second, let me by... oh hold on, I'm just getting right through... uh... you can see I'm in the lane... oh shit!" *Collision because the driver here couldn't stop because of the dumbass pulling in front of them*.

11

u/HighwaySetara 2d ago

Looks like the right lane to me.

-301

u/tomk7532 3d ago

Feel like hard braking would have been better than swerving here. Either way it’s good you got on camera.

210

u/Dry_Lock8245 3d ago

I did hard brake, if I didn’t swerve, I would have t-boned them

125

u/ThePistachioBogeyman 3d ago

You don’t got working eyes and ears?

1

u/tomk7532 1d ago

Braking hard in a straight line results in a shorter stopping distance than braking hard and turning hard at the same time. OP used up some of his tire grip braking capacity by swerving. Decent chance that a straight line hard brake to a stop would have done the trick here. They were probably less than 10ft away from a stop when the impact happened.

This is definitely a Monday morning quarterback take based on watching the video multiple times. Can’t say most people would have reacted differently in the moment and still 100% the other drivers fault.

38

u/FlixMage 2d ago

Are you stupid on purpose

-286

u/jeneric84 3d ago

Not your fault at all but I say this to everyone going through an intersection, ALWAYS brake at least a little until you have confirmed no oncoming traffic.

223

u/wadsplay 3d ago

Anyone driving behind you must hate you

105

u/Android2715 2d ago

Hi i definitely hate him and anyone like him

50

u/Lysol20 2d ago

I had to explain this to someone the other day. You don't just randomly brake at intersections out of caution because people behind you are likely trying to speed through it. They aren't expecting the car in front of them to brake at a green light.

9

u/FriedSticks2014 2d ago

That’s exactly how I rear ended somebody once. There was a person in the left turn lane opposite our through lane inching forward into the intersection so they wouldn’t miss the light. Person in front of me saw this and slammed on the brakes and went from 40 to like 15, and I couldn’t stop in time. The light was stale green for us, flashing yellow for the left turning car.

1

u/MrT735 2d ago

I would, find plenty of these drivers too, you're going through a light that's been green for 15-20 seconds already at 20mph, you don't need to brake just because you're turning, any car can manage that turn at that speed (well, maybe not a Reliant Robin...)

57

u/TankerKC 2d ago

So you’re one of those dumfuks

60

u/MrBalll 2d ago

Why should I brake for a green light? Everyone must think you brake check them at every intersection and hate you.

49

u/wsteelerfan7 2d ago

You shouldn't hit the brakes, but you should be covering brake on the way through

24

u/thecakeisali 2d ago

Ah yes, make sure you brake at all green lights, when passing a driveway, if a car a half mile in front of you does anything, when you see a cop, and throw some randoms in there too to ensure everyone behind you knows you’re there.

9

u/muffinscrub 2d ago

You're one of those idiots who brakes for a green light, slight bend in the road, for no fucking reason at all.

-321

u/Wyan69 3d ago

If this ever happens again and I hope it never does, turn the opposite of the cars direction, so in this case go left.

210

u/Dry_Lock8245 3d ago

There was an oncoming car, I would have turned into it

132

u/Acceptable_Owl6926 3d ago

Yea. Thats a fucking stupid idea

26

u/TheBupherNinja 3d ago

I'd probably not turn into oncoming traffic. But just hit the brakes.

93

u/Dry_Lock8245 3d ago

Hitting the brakes would have had me t-boning them

-162

u/TheBupherNinja 3d ago edited 3d ago

Sucks for them, good for you. Cars are best at hitting things head on or being hit in the rear.

Also... I think you would have cleared if you mashed the brakes and went straight. You'd slow down faster if your front wheels weren't also trying to turn. You only have so much grip, instead of using it to slow down, some of it was used to push you to the right. And even without that, it's damn close. (actually, re-watching the video, I am nearly 100% confidence you would have maybe hit their rear bumper, and 85% sure you would have gotten away without any contact. Look at how far across the intersection they get by the time you hit them, they were almost out.).

Ill argue that in almost all scenarios, you should pin the brakes and maintain course. If it's quick reaction, you can't actually see what you are swerving towards and determine if it's better. Here it was fucked up because you 'evaded' right into them. You could also oversteer and spin out. If you avoid an accident with them, and hit something else, it's not necessarily their insurance paying anymore.

Obviously if it's a 50k lb oil tanker barreling at you at 85 mph then gtfo, but for this, or animals, just pin the brakes.

None of this is to say you are a shitty driver. People do shit, it happens. But I really think you made it worse by steering.

83

u/Dry_Lock8245 3d ago

At the time of me hitting the brakes, I had already started to swerve away from them but they kept coming and there wasn’t much I could have done to move more at that point

-170

u/TheBupherNinja 3d ago

To be blunt, where the fuck did you expect them to go? They are already in the intersection when they saw you. They can either stop dead in front of you (bad) or hope to slip right in front of you (maybe less bad).

So, you are saying you swerved before hitting the brakes? That's wrong. Step 1 is always slow down. Time to think and evaluate.

I'll (not) die in this hill. Hit the brakes, maintain course. I think it's the best way to avoid the accident, and Cars crash best in the front anyways.

Maybe you couldn't have avoided it, but steering nearly always makes it worse.

75

u/Dear-Ad2601 3d ago

No one died, it's not that deep

-132

u/TheBupherNinja 3d ago

I'm not trying to be rude or berate OP.

But, you should think about the accident and what you could have done to improve or avoid the situation, even if you didn't cause it.

And, no-one died this time.

13

u/Dry_Lock8245 2d ago

If they were sensible, they would have hit the brakes and completely stopped. It’s not my fault he tried continuing through the turn. I never said I swerved before hitting the brakes, you can see and hear in the video I hit the brakes first then swerved in quick succession
