While this number probably doesn't sound too high to those not following this series, keep in mind that the next best selling game in the series only sold 400k. Ryza 1 passed it a while ago, and from this it's safe to say so has Ryza 2.

I wonder how far Ryza 3 will push the number.

JRPGs is a niche. Anything not Final Fantsy selling over a million is a miracle.

A good rule of thumb for these types of figure is that a studio publicly celebrating a milestone or telling the press officially how much money with no external pressure then it's good. If Ryza needed to sell 2 million to be profitable then they'd hide these numbers completely.

This is only unimpressive compared to big games like Final Fantasy 7 Remake selling 5 million.

That's a lot of copies.

it is?

Relative to the series, yeah. Devs generally release at least one title a year to stay profitable.

u/Lourdinn Mar 17 '23

How many games have you sold?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '23

probably 3... haven't checked that gamejam game over a decade.

These devs business model is to sell yearly around 100k is okay. More is better.

Ryza was different because it brought lots of new people in with the THICC memes and ample rule34. Most Atelier games have characters that are thin and look like middleschoolers. Ryza by contrast I beleive was 17 and taller curvy body with infectious positivity. It was like the ASMR of JRPGs if you ask me.

TL:DR thicc sells.

Edit: I really wish they would bring the series to game pass so I can play them all again.

Both games were fantastic and I look forward to the 3rd

Atelier fans know what's up.

I loved my time with Atelier Ryza but I honestly believe that they'd see many, many more sales and general popularity if their games had better prices. It's a bit ridiculous that Ryza 1 is still $60 and the PC ports of older games are $40, even if everyone is aware that the prices have been traditionally high for this series.

Yakuza 0 found its way into the Steam library of almost everyone I know over a few years because its deep discounts and made so many of them Yakuza fans that went on to buy Yakuza Kiwami through Yakuza: Like a Dragon. Like a Dragon is $18 at the moment and is a very high quality JRPG whereas Atelier Ryza will go on sale for $30 for a lower budget niche that is a year older than the Yakuza game.

It drives me crazy that some of the switch games are $100+.

The switch is still the Nintendo flagship, it's games should be readily available and everything digital.

u/nelisan Mar 17 '23

That’s more of a publisher issue if their games are going out of print or not being made available digitally.

5

u/burnpsy Mar 17 '23

The Atelier games that are the subject of this thread are available digitally. That does not prevent physical copies from rising in price due to the amount of people who insist on physical.

6

u/DeLurkerDeluxe Mar 17 '23

Wtf does this have to do with Switch?

1

u/sennoken Mar 19 '23

Its essential the price for convenience. Companies know that people rather have the option to play games on the go rather be tied to a TV thus demand keeps those prices up. This is why PS4/XBO versions are lower in price due to lower demand.

Happy to see. My wife doesn’t play a ton of games (mostly ace attorney games and tsukihime-type stuff), but she has been absolutely crushing the atelier games over the last year or so, so it’s nice to know that the series’ future is fairly secure :)

5

u/gamerfiiend Mar 17 '23

Has she played Sophie 2? That’s my absolute favorite Atelier game

2

u/_______blank______ Mar 18 '23

tsukihime-type stuff

Uhh you mean visual novel?

Thick Thighs Save Lives

22

u/Easy_Decision2486 Mar 17 '23

Correction: It's 1.6M units shipped not sold.

16

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '23

For the few that don't know what I'm talking about, "shipped" refers to the units that the publisher delivers to retailers (marketing people refer to it as "Sell-in"), while "sold" is commonly (but not exactly properly) used in gaming discourse to indicate what's defined in marketing as "Sell-through", or the number of units that retailers sell to actual customers

Via the interwebs

19

u/Arca-Knight Mar 17 '23

That's sold. Technically.

Publishers use the term shipped as sold to retail stores. That's the term that appears on financial reports.

Those numbers are already completed transaction and earnings for the company.

0

u/Easy_Decision2486 Mar 17 '23

From what I understand, Media Create and CESA work with publishers and retailers to track the number of copies shipped to retailers and sold to consumers in Japan.

11

u/Ajfennewald Mar 17 '23

I am guessing that means Ryza 1 is close to 1 million on it's own since it is presumably the higher selling of the two.

IDK, I think thighs became pretty trendy around the time Gridman SSSS aired. Coicidence?

23

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '23

The Nier Automata effect, thick thighs moves sales

30

u/Mac772 Mar 17 '23

Or maybe because Nier: Automata and the Atelier Ryza series are fantastic games. Nier: Automata is even considered by many as one of the best games ever made.

38

u/DeGozaruNyan Mar 17 '23

If I can choose between a Great game and a Great game with Great thighs I choose the latter

5

u/Scufo Mar 17 '23

Come for the thighs, stay for the cries

15

u/[deleted] Mar 17 '23

Based on the cosplay that has helped make it semi mainstream, it's all about them thighs boo

6

u/Woogity Mar 17 '23

It very well might have the best soundtrack of any game. It's my favorite game of the PS4 generation for sure.

4

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '23

because Nier: Automata and the Atelier Ryza series are fantastic games.

So was Nier Gestalt/Replicant and the other dozen ateliers before it. Clearly something else lifted them up...

1

u/SizzlinKola Mar 17 '23

How’s the story? Nier is my top favorite for it’s story and characters.

2

u/Mac772 Mar 18 '23

Do you mean the Atelier series? Ryza 1 and 2 are very relaxing, feel good JRPGs. I think it's called "slice of life" in english language? Don't expect something epic like Nier: Automata. It's just the story of Ryza and her friends going on an adventure, discovering the world outside of their village and growing up. But that's part of the charm of these games.

3

u/Ajfennewald Mar 18 '23

They draw attention to the games yes. The reason those games continue to sell though is that they are great at doing what they set out to do.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 18 '23

Attention is the hardest part tho. Look at how many tens of millions AAA's spend just to get attention.

They did that for the last 3 trilogies in Japan so they might do it for this one too. As a physical collector it would be nice if they all have the PS5 box art.

2

u/Gahault Mar 17 '23

They did sell such a pack in Japan earlier this year, with the first two games and a box to hold the trilogy. Don't know what that means for western markets though.

u/RockingWaffle

1

u/Easy_Decision2486 Mar 17 '23

Yes I remember now. I didn't know it had enough space to fit 3 games, that's funny. I guess that means they won't do a triple DX pack then.

3

u/Prototype-Angel Mar 17 '23 edited Mar 17 '23

It’d sell more if I could actually get hold of Ryza 2 anywhere…

3

u/Easy_Decision2486 Mar 17 '23

They did a reprint for Ryza 1 when it got kind of expensive so they might do it for Ryza 2 at some point.

3

u/WiteXDan Mar 17 '23

Damn that's three times more than users on r/thighdeology, considering this is the same target audience.

3

u/Revolutionary-Pin688 Mar 17 '23

It’s the thighs….that made it possible

Atelier games usually don't try to lock you out in terms of plot, so you'll probably understand things just fine once you get past the whole "Who are these people?" phase.

I would probably Google the main characters just to get a general idea though. Or the game might have a recap on the title screen.

3

u/Easy_Decision2486 Mar 17 '23

Probably not, but I would start from 1 anyway since Atelier games are usually self-contained. I haven't played Ryza myself, but I doubt there's enough of an improvement between 1 and 3 to justify skipping the first 2 games. If you really want to play only 1 game for some reason, just play the first one.

3

u/Mac772 Mar 18 '23

I don't think it's necessary, but you would miss so much when you don't start with Ryza 1, especially the whole character development of Ryza and her friends. That's a huge part of this series.

3

u/zyndri Mar 18 '23

I'm playing 1 at the moment (my first atelier title). Can honestly recommend it, no reason to skip it. It's very accessible, relaxing to play, and has a fairly good story for what it is and the characters are all likeable.

2

u/IndependentCress1109 Mar 19 '23

While you can usually just skip the atelier games with barely anything missed (Aside from recognising whenever previous player characters making a cameo or becoming your party members)

With Ryza in particular since its following the same group of characters(with a few new characters here and there) for all 3 games you do indeed have quite a bit to miss in terms of the characters development since some of them do change pretty significantly.

1

u/endar88 Mar 17 '23

still want to try this game out. had bought the trilogy that was on vita a long time ago and enjoyed them but also.....didn't.... guess i wanted more combat.

just waiting for it to go on sale.

1

u/Chiiiiizz Mar 17 '23

a lot of people like Atelier Ryza "tights"

1

u/JRPGFan_CE_org Mar 18 '23

Thick Thighs sells well.

1

u/IndependentCress1109 Mar 19 '23

Good to hear my favourite series is doing well.. even if i'm not too big a fan of Ryza's combat or alchemy system.... Liked the Mysterious and Arland games a TON more. Wonder if we're getting a new sub-series or Arc next year... Here's to hoping it will be something more along the line of Sophie 2 for its combat and alchemy since dear god do i love how they use it there....
