News Clair Obscur has achieved the highest concurrent player rate ever for a JRPG on Steam.

Incredible numbers, this doesn't even include the Xbox Gamepass player count. The last time I remember a JRPG getting this level of attention was Persona 5 and NieR Automata in 2017. It'll be interesting to see how massive Persona 6 will be, if it launches day 1 on all major platforms.

OP fixing to get blasted for calling this game a JRPG

Why? This sub accepts South park: the stick of truth as a jrpg.

There is absolutely no consensus on the sub for what a JRPG is. Each time a new game that ticks all the JRPG boxes except being made in Japan by Japanese people is released, all you get is sterile debate like on this post. More than half the posts are about whether it's a JRPG or not

lmao true, i even had an argument with someone here regarding if genshin is a jrpg or not and it's a fking 5 years old game.

The opposite is just as common, with people calling Monster Hunter or pre-7 Yakuza JRPGs when they're obviously not.

Agree. I like to classify all Yakuza as JRPG just so I can put them all in the same list I maintain, but I wouldn't try to argue it's right

They do? That's nuts lol

Yeah. It has way more in common with Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy than Baldur's gate or morrowind.

That's interesting, I'm actually curious to know more about the game. I've been seeing it pop up on multiple posts on Reddit.

Give it a go, it’s a pretty great game, even if it’s comically easy to break the combat system.

I'll probably check out a video of it to see how it is. I currently have a list of games I still gotta get through. Depending on it looks I'll add it to the list or not.

Why? It is a JRPG and a damn fun one.

I have no idea why people are downvoting me, I actually like the game. I have literally never heard it described as a JRPG and I was surprised though.

Yeah, it’s one of the most well known western JRPGs. I think the style has been gaining a lot more traction with western developers (Sea of Stars, Clair Obscur and a few others), but for a long time, South Park and Child of Light were the most known examples. I guess the generation that grew up with Final Fantasy is now heading studios.

Which game are you referring to? I was replying to the person who mentioned South Park the Stick of Truth.

Stick of Truth.

Probably because of the "that's nuts" comment when the game is clearly a jrpg.

You didn't get downvoted because people think you were criticizing the game, just that you acted like it was preposterous for anyone to call it a jrpg.

Even if you have never heard it described that way, it shouldn't be hard to conceptualize someone describing it as a jrpg unless you've literally never heard any definition of JRPG outside of "RPG made in Japan"

Which in and of itself would be odd because even people here who see JRPG to mean "Japanese made RPG" are aware of other people's definitions

(Btw, I did not downvote, was just explaining what I see as the obvious reason you got downvoted)

Yea, I've gone by the literal definition really. Whether or not other people see it as one isn't as important as whether the game is good or not imo. But yea a RPG that is Japanese made id a JRPG. Anything else I call an RPG or whatever other subgenres they might fit under.
