News Expedition 33 team visits Square Enix & FF7 Remake Team for a "Creatively rich exchange of visions and ideas."

u/SugaryMiyamoto Jul 24 '25
I don't even expect this to be a crossover of development teams for a new title, I just find it so cool that SE is willing to learn from and exchange thoughts with these immensely talented up-and-comers.

u/Kumomeme Jul 25 '25
developers are fine with each others. they respect everyone.

learn from the people who learned from them. irony lol
72
u/i_dont_wanna_sign_up Jul 25 '25
It's not irony at all for a teacher to be willing to learn from a former student.
9
u/FieserMoep Jul 25 '25
I mean. Maybe. We should treat it normal though. This is how it's supposed to be. Creative work should influence each other. The idea of always reinventing the wheel is just hurting.
11
u/SufferingClash Jul 25 '25
It's the same thing that happened with Tomb Raider and Uncharted. The old Tomb Raider games inspired the development of the Uncharted games, the Uncharted games inspired the development of the newer Tomb Raiders.
74
u/Affectionate-Ad-6934 Jul 24 '25
More like learn from the people who got inspired from your games.

The part that irks me is the "ironic" wording. It's not ironic in the slightest. It's exactly what you want and expect to happen.
7
u/Zefyris Jul 25 '25
More like, "learn from those who came before, and leave a trail for those who come after"
21
u/linest10 Jul 25 '25
AND learned from SE games, let's remember that it's thanks SE that a lot if classic and loved Turn Based games exist
21
u/PopularVolume5835 Jul 25 '25
Imo, Sakaguchi and Sakaguchi era Squaresoft were the inspiration, and it's thanks to him those games exist. If there is a Squaresoft game FFXII or earlier, chances are he had a heavy hand in it. Also, X33 has heavy Lost Odyssey energy. He's still making turn based games while SE prefer to make action games
That's just my opinion though - but Sakaguchi and Matsuno (FFT, FFXII, Vagrant Story) are my creative idols, so I'm biased
Square were never the same after he left. Uematsu (the godly composer) said as much

u/Sacreville Jul 25 '25
Nothing's wrong with that tbh. You can learn from everyone, even people younger than you.
1
u/Villad_rock Jul 26 '25
They did a lot better in some areas that. square could learn from.
Even how to make a good trailer

u/bunker_man Jul 25 '25
Well, as much as I don't like the fact that final fantasy keeps moving further away from what the old games are like, its true that square always prided itself on developing and changing the games. So they definitely seem like people who would be eager to see someone doing something new.
35
u/mrbalaton Jul 24 '25
Or maybe, they get to remake Final Fantasy 8. Boing!!!!
13
1
Jul 25 '25
They have definitely proven to be great at the whole "intriguing setting gets upended by less-intriguing dreamy-weamy nonsense 2/3s of the way through the story" thing.
(I am half joking, I love FF8 and mostly really enjoyed Clair Obscur)

5
1
u/koreawut Jul 25 '25
I do want to point out that, and this is not an argument to say they will have a crossover development team, but Square Enix have said that they are not only willing but that they expected (i think was the word) that a mainline Final Fantasy title would eventually be developed outside of Square Enix. It's been many years since they've said it, and the details are fuzzy, but it's a distinct possibility.

u/Asuka_Rei Jul 26 '25
I think it is probably too late for ff7:remake to switch to classic turn-based, but hopefully the squeenix team will learn something they can apply to a future game or ff7:remake of the remake.
1
u/SugaryMiyamoto Jul 26 '25
FF7:R personally has my favorite combat in the entire series but I just can't stand the drastic changes to the story lmao I'd be really happy about another true turn-based game though. I enjoyed the action-y FF games but I'd like to see a return to form while innovating on different aspects.

u/Beastmind Jul 24 '25
They also visited Kojima https://x.com/HIDEO_KOJIMA_EN/status/1948295121063092634?t=y698361p27_N-VGfWTbHew&s=19

u/SCVGoodT0GoSir Jul 25 '25
For those who come after!
16
1
u/CelioHogane Jul 31 '25
Now that makes sense, Kojima is a fan of the kind of cinema Expedition 33 was inspired by.
44
u/SuperSaiyanIR Jul 24 '25
Dont take this as a teaser for anything from Square. The E33 team also visited Kojima Productions as well so unless you expect a Kojima X Sandfall collab you won’t get this collab either.
11
1
u/Natreg Jul 25 '25
Well, what about Kojima x Square Enix x Sandall collab?
Not happening, but that would be insane :D
1
u/lolpostslol Jul 26 '25
I’d check my valuation with as many bigger competitors as possible, too lol
Though tbh this IS probably more about Sandfall fangirling over their favorite devs and their favorite devs trying to get wtf the secret sauce at Sandfall is. And/or checking if cultures vibe well together to see if something can be done in the future
217
u/sbeaudet13 Jul 24 '25
Did they let them leave?
88
u/PrivateScents Jul 24 '25
Are they contracted to work on FF17?
20
Jul 25 '25
God please.
29
u/Watton Jul 25 '25
I don't get this obsession with Sandfall making a FF game.
I'd rather they make more Clair Obscur games.
11
u/Important-Net-9805 Jul 25 '25
almost definitely. no spoilers but i think they're planning to create a pretty rich world after e33
7
4
u/absentlyric Jul 25 '25
It would be easy money for them, they could easily do plenty of prequels and even side stories of the other expeditions that came before them, similar to the star wars universe prequel shows.

Me too. I think too many people wanted a shot for shot, word for word visually updated replica. They expected their nostalgic childhood memories to be recreated. And that game, for everyone but the small vocal minority, would've sucked. And then even they would've nit-picked. It's reddit, people go to extremes.

(Moved it to its own comment like I originally intended)
I mean I think it would be awesome.
Red could get Maelle's stuff, Viper gets our two boys weapons, Astro gets Lune, Dragoon Scielle and Blue Mage (because when do they ever get event weapons?) Monoco.
And of course, Picto is an obvious one.

Guillaume, the director, must've been spazzing meeting Kitase. Given that he's a hardcore FF8 fan like Ben Starr.

It was such a pleasure to meet you!
...Whatever, wanna play cards?

u/AbbasKiarostamee Jul 24 '25
I understand the guy on the right is Kitase but who's the dude with the orange top?
29
u/Yula97 Jul 24 '25
that's Hamaguchi, director of Rebirth (and likely part3)
6
u/AbbasKiarostamee Jul 24 '25
Thx.
I thought Nomura would keep directing FF Remakes. Why did he leave? KH?
15
u/Yula97 Jul 24 '25
he is still working on them , but he is more on a creative role for the team, while Hamaguchi is the one leading the day to day work and actual development
7
u/Yesshua Jul 24 '25
And yes, Nomura's primary project is Kingdom Hearts 4. That's been the assignment ever since they pulled him off FF versus 13 to work on KH 3.
7
u/AbbasKiarostamee Jul 24 '25
Man, don't talk about Versus plz. It's still hurting.

That is Naoki Hamaguchi, who is amazing and has directed the trilogy. Nomura is the name on the title card, but he was mostly in charge of concepts and oversight, Hamaguchi is the lead director. Hamaguchi gives me a lot of hope for the series beyond the Remake trilogy.

u/Drakeem1221 Jul 25 '25
It'll always be funny to me how in any industry, the people who work/compete with each other are so much less toxic towards each other than the fans of both sides.
This is amazing. We need more of these good vibes.
23
u/MessiahPrinny Jul 24 '25
I hope they got some localization connections. E33 needs a JP dub, the subs are too fast.
→ More replies (19)16
u/soihu Jul 24 '25
The timing on the E33 subs is whack, they disappear the microsecond after the character has finished speaking.
6
u/Shinter Jul 24 '25
It's always refreshing when a game has good subs but sadly most games don't have that.
Worst I've seen has been in Girl's Frontline 2. Subs appear and the character starts to talks like 3 seconds later but by the time they start to talk a new line has already appeared. Also happens the other way around. Really awful.

u/Ordinal43NotFound Jul 25 '25
Problem is what people actually want is turn based games with AAA production values. Which Square only reserved for FF and KH nowadays.
→ More replies (12)3
u/Werewolf_Capable Jul 25 '25
The turn based games Square pumped out are just not of the highest quality... I really only like the artstyle of games like Octopath Traveler, the game itself is mediocre and not a labour of love.
→ More replies (2)1
u/scytheavatar Jul 25 '25
You are out of touch and overrating Octopath Traveler 2/Romancing Saga 2 remake if you think they are games on the level of Expedition 33. What people want from Square Enix are turn based games that can win GOTY.

8
u/twili-midna Jul 25 '25
E33’s combat is quite bad imho, so I would hate to see any series adopt it.
4
u/omnicloudx13 Jul 24 '25
Absolutely loved Expedition 33 and FF7 Remake/Rebirth. Cannot wait for the next games by both these amazing teams. Maybe they'll do a collab in the future.
4
u/jacktuar Jul 24 '25
I do think the VII Remake team is most likely to go back to turn based, of the two FF teams. They were still making command based games with the XIII trilogy, and even VIIR isn't a total abandonment of ATB.
Whereas the XVI team have never really had that history of turn based. XI, XII, XIV were all more real time even before XVI.
12
u/PPMD_IS_BACK Jul 24 '25
Maybe after remake finishes but I highly doubt they'll change it up after sticking with this system for two games.
4
10
u/jamvng Jul 24 '25 edited Jul 25 '25
Remake also has an amazing hybrid system. Arguably one of the best combat systems in the series. Most fans will not want to change it.
→ More replies (1)2
u/Kumomeme Jul 25 '25
SE basically found a holy grail with the system. would be waste to discard it. sooner or later other studio will copy the system like how Sandfall did with E33.
3
u/Kumomeme Jul 25 '25 edited Jul 25 '25
based on Naoki Yoshida interview regarding development of FF16 combat, where developer from Capcom like Ryota Suzuki transfered his animation and combat knowledge to CS3 team, i believe similliar stuff happened with FFVII remake team too. that team got another Capcom devs which is Teruki Endo.
they been building up foundation and knowledge of action combat. would be waste to throw that. especially they been training younger future devs. lot of 7 remake team also come from KH3 team, which is also action combat.
so action element likely a vital part for future. but we might see they combined with other element like turn based for unique combat system, which is trademark of Square Enix. FFVII remake system is good example. so they not gonna discarded the decades of turn based experience but mostly will combine and adapt for modern games.
CS3 might be bit different though since they has MMO background.
1
u/Radinax Jul 25 '25
I hope the XVI team is never allowed to make another single player title ever, let them focus on MMORPGs.

u/Radinax Jul 25 '25
Eww no.
I love E33 but the combat can get tiring with the parries/dodges, let them cook their own system, but please, a good system.
→ More replies (1)8
u/zollipun Jul 25 '25
I'd definitely prefer a FFX full turn based system, but if mixing turn based and realtime is the step they have to make to get away from the devil may cry style combat, it would be amazing in comparison.
11
u/twili-midna Jul 25 '25
That would suck so hard.
1
u/Weird-Nebula-8059 Jul 25 '25

u/OneSeaworthiness7901 Jul 26 '25
This are amazing news! It’s honestly so good to see developers exchanging ideas. Though they do have one problem in common that I would love for them to work on: dumping most of the side content on you right before the final stretch of the game, I disliked it in XVI, Remake/Rebirth and E33

I swear some people just didn't play Rebirth at all, I get some people don't like the direction of the Remake trilogy and wanted a paint-by-numbers "HD remake," but Rebirth is an excellent game separate from the source material, and it deserved all the praise it got.
7
u/Independent-Skill154 Jul 25 '25
Ironically, everyone liked it at first and thought it was Game of the Year-worthy, but now everyone hates it because a turn-based game received as much praise. A liked Rebirth as much as 33, even though I prefer 33’s turn-based system—both have their pros and cons (Let's not pretend 33 has not some weird quality-of-life issues). Final Fantasy VII is my favorite game of all time, but at this point, if every part is like Rebirth, I prefer a multi-part remake that isn’t 100% faithful over to play with the exact same experience but with a coat of pain.
1
u/presterkhan Jul 25 '25
Wait, it's been a day, can you tell me what happened at the end of Rebirth, I'm actually curious because I have no clue.
→ More replies (4)1
u/presterkhan 20d ago
Okay my friend, it's been 25 days since I asked what happened at the end of Rebirth. I got no answers because you don't have it. The game was 95% brilliant and fumbled the bag at the end. Aerith's death was handled more poorly than can be stated with words. It was a convoluted mess that was pulled off so badly I don't even know if the story has plot holes because I couldn't follow what was supposed to be happening. That didn't happen with the OG. Not because the direction of the new game is bad, but because the writing of the new game is bad.
I played the game the day it came out, just like I did with Remake, and I will play the sequel when it drops as well because I'm a big fan. However, I know that the sequel will also be middling at best because of the team in the picture. Shitting the bed one or two times is an accident. Shitting the bed for 15 years makes you a bed shitter.

I know I'm in the minority but Expedition 33 was a poor game, I really did not enjoy it at all. Totally overhyped. It looked and sounded great but gameplay was not for me. Be interesting to see what they do next though.
