Discussion i think my brain is broken because..

every new half decent jrpg i play tends to affect my perception of the one i played just prior. To give the most recent example, i 100%'d SaGa frontier 2 Remastered a couple weeks ago and enjoyed it a LOT. fast forward to a few days ago, i start Disgaea 5, and now I feel like maybe, just maybe, SaGa f 2 wasnt all THAT...

this happened with graces f remastered and saga frontier 2 r in a cycle before the current one. the only exception that i can point to recently is Bravely default 2, which remains one of the best games ive played

Probably better than always feeling like the one you're playing is a step down.

a lot of people talk about video games like it's the only form of media they experience

They'll be in for a shock when they find out about books.

I think that is the case for a lot of gamers.

It's video games + comic book movies, and they don't experience anything else.

Odd    It’s just recent bias chill

Recency bias is an incredibly common cognitive tendency. lol

It's good that you focus on the positives rather than the negatives. The secret to a happy life there.

Maybe give yourself more time between games, or play something very different between.

But I'm mostly just commenting to say there's nothing broken about your brain. This is a wholly common thing everyone experiences to a degree. Be kind to yourself.

Is it that the new game excels in ways the previous game did not? Or is it that you were in some kind of flow state while playing and lost the rose colored glasses once something new came along? Either way, it might be a good idea to write down your initial impressions as you experience them. This can help you better understand what your tastes are and maybe pinpoint any exterior factors that influenced the mood.

Some games are beloved because they're a highlight of our formative adolescent years. Other times, it was there for us at just the right moment we needed (depression, uncertainty, or simple boredom). All of these are perfectly valid reasons. Someone made a post early as to "why FFV is so underrated" to which I responded that there's nothing wrong with not being among the "top" choices when you have the quality of Final Fantasy behind you. It can still be a 9 or even a 10. It's just that you found a new 10 that moved the goal post.

You really enjoyed saga at the time that you played it.

Be glad that you enjoy a new game even more than the previous one. There's no need to keep comparing them. If you're having fun, then you're having fun, and that's all that matters.

To some extent it sounds like you're just discovering new things about your tastes. Disgaea is a very different kind of game from SaGa Frontier, and Tales of Graces is very different from either of those. You're eating a bunch of individual dishes within the same category of food. You can like seafood, and you eat a type of fish and really like it, but then you have crab and get floored by it. I'd say it's only really an issue if you look at the other things you enjoyed and suddenly think they're bad in comparison, even though you'd just enjoyed them (but that doesn't seem like the case).

Keep exploring and find what fits your tastes best!

I think that's common, even if people don't explicitly acknowledge it.

It's good to give every game a fair shot on its own, but it's understandable that games fresh in our memory are seen again through the lens of what we play now. For instance, I noticed a whole lot about Final Fantasy IX and how it does text boxes after playing the Chrono Cross remaster. I had played FFIX not that long before.

To be fair, Disgaea 5 is so good, that it'll make most people question how they missed out on such a phenomenal game for so long.
