OK this has actually eluded me for YEARS. A long time ago, probably in 1991 or 1992, I heard this great jazz song "Don't Tread on Me" on a local jazz show. Back then I used to record these shows onto cassette tape and then edit them down. I had ELEVEN tapes full of absolute gold from this show, called "Jazz, Etc" hosted by Jay Trachtenberg, on KUT here in Austin. So I listened to this song and others all the time, but I never really knew who the artist/band was. Then one day, someone broke into my car and stole all of my tapes :(
Here's what I know about the song:
- It starts with the female vocalist doing some spoken word, which I'm pretty sure included the US Constitution preamble ("we the people...")
- It then transitions into a full band arrangement of a song with the refrain, "Don't tread on me, don't tread one me". I assumed that was the title but who knows.
- The song itself I would say is a slow swing, very jazzy.
- The singer is/was incredible.
I've searched Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, etc and I just can't find any jazz songs titled "Don't Tread on Me" that match. Lyric searches and archive.org have turned up empty too.
It's a great song and a great performance so I'd hate to think it's been lost to time. If this rings any bells, please let me know!
