Official - Jazz Listening Club Jazz Listening Club #16 - Arthur Blythe - "Lenox Avenue Breakdown" (1979)

Hello again jazz fans! We're back with some '70s jazz gold this week.

\*And don't miss all of the previous weeks' recommended listening either: Jazz Listening Club v2 prior weeks***

There have been a couple of threads on this album over the years on the sub but I think Blythe overall deserves more recognition. And this album in particular really has, for me, some of the best things that '70s jazz had to offer.

Let us know what you think! And as always, if you have any nominations for albums to do in a coming week, PLEASE DM ME.

Remembering Elvin Jones on his Birthday.

Elvin Ray Jones (September 9 1927 – May 18 2004) is one of the great Jazz drummers. He is especially known for being part of John Coltrane's band 1960-1965.

He was the pulse of that quartet. I still enjoy his duet track with Coltrane - "Vigil" on the "Kulu Sé Mama" album.

I was also very fortunate to see him live in London with his own band.

Any favourites? Any stories? Have you seen him live?

Please let's remember him today and always.

Something I found interesting…

Was browsing YouTube this morning and stumbled over this old lesson, figured I’d share it with the sub for those interested as well. Was a good reminder as a player myself and was always an issue I had with giant steps and how most players approach it, or at least horn players.

Just a little Barry Harris demonstrating how to hear language thru songs that might have more of a structurally dense sound with rhythm and bebop language.

Favorite post 60s Sonny Rollins discography?

Im a big big Sonny Rollins fan, some of the best Jazz Ive heard in my life is from that quartet with Jim Hall, like on „The Bridge“. Im currently going through his 70s stuff and beyond. and well, its kind of a mixed bag for me. Aesthetically in a completely different direction to his early 60s, later 50s work. Sonically and compositionally very trendy, not so deep to me, but there is some strong and certainly deep playing from his part in moments. What are your favorite records from Sonny Rollins from the 70s till now? What are your thoughts on how he changed his playing and style?

“Jazz is the music of freedom (...). In my reality, time moves in one direction, ever forward. I've got to live and create in the present in order to shape the future. I hope I can maintain the imagination and the chops to keep pushing the boundaries of jazz trumpet." - Malachi Thompson avant-garde jazz trumpet player

does this fall into the category of jazz?

I started the piano 11 years ago (and lessons have always been very on/off and inconsistent), but I've only ever been pop/classically trained! i have an audition today for a great youth jazz band in my area, and I've been trying to learn how to incorporate stylistic elements of jazz into my improv pursuits. can you guys let me know if this piano solo (attached below) falls into the jazz genre: https://youtu.be/Rj7H1y7Ryy0
*btw, the jazz band I'm auditioning for is heavy on lead sheets and written arrangements. for lead sheets, is it okay that I only play the first few (2-3) measures or even simply the chords written before I begin improvising? thanks!

Andrea Braido – Jazz Garden & Friends

I’d like to share Jazz Garden & Friends, the new album by Andrea Braido.
The opening track Old Times carries a strong jazz imprint, featuring Andrea on guitar, Bruno Zoia on double bass, and Davide Ragazzoni on drums.

The record blends melodic phrasing with warm, analog-inspired textures from start to finish.
I’d be very interested in the community’s impressions on the album’s sound and interplay.

1987 Andy Sheppard album

Clearing out my loft I came across my old cassette tape of Andy Sheppard's debut solo album which I listened to a lot.

I'd tried to find it on the streaming services I've got access to with no joy so was looking forward to hearing it again but sadly the tape was badly warped so I'm back to square one.

Does anyone know of a source where I could perhaps download the music in a decent format? I know streaming services are not brilliant, but it is a shame that stuff on the Antilles label from the late 80s doesn't seem to be available to dip into.

Thanks in advance!

Went down a youtube rabbit hole and stumbled upon this. Not really sure what genre this would be, so sorry if it's not technically jazz, but the instrumentals are pretty impressive I thought. Anybody know any more about this band? Can't seem to find much, other than they're based out of Los Angeles.

Help identify this song! ("Don't Tread on Me" .. I think)

OK this has actually eluded me for YEARS. A long time ago, probably in 1991 or 1992, I heard this great jazz song "Don't Tread on Me" on a local jazz show. Back then I used to record these shows onto cassette tape and then edit them down. I had ELEVEN tapes full of absolute gold from this show, called "Jazz, Etc" hosted by Jay Trachtenberg, on KUT here in Austin. So I listened to this song and others all the time, but I never really knew who the artist/band was. Then one day, someone broke into my car and stole all of my tapes :(

Here's what I know about the song:

  • It starts with the female vocalist doing some spoken word, which I'm pretty sure included the US Constitution preamble ("we the people...")
  • It then transitions into a full band arrangement of a song with the refrain, "Don't tread on me, don't tread one me". I assumed that was the title but who knows.
  • The song itself I would say is a slow swing, very jazzy.
  • The singer is/was incredible.

I've searched Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, etc and I just can't find any jazz songs titled "Don't Tread on Me" that match. Lyric searches and archive.org have turned up empty too.

It's a great song and a great performance so I'd hate to think it's been lost to time. If this rings any bells, please let me know!
