Is transcribing musically healthy?
Does anyone else have their doubts? It seems to be accepted here as THE way to learn about soloing. I feel it is excessively emphasized, at the expense of many other elements of successful jazz soloing.

Lofi/Jazz
Hello, my friends! I am looking for recommendations. My 7th grader is super into Lofi music. Anything extremely relaxed, she loves. She’s interested in jazz, so I’ve tried a few things here and there. Bill Evans was a little “too high energy” (did not expect that). Miles was close, but the trumpet was “a little distracting” (fair). She likes to sleep, ready and study with her lowkey music on.
I’m not sure what Lofi or Jazz CDs I can snag her - she has a CD player, and I’d love for her to be able to have some music she digs to listen to when streaming isn’t an option. Jazz, I have a bigger collection so I can work my way through finding an eligible player, but I’m completely clueless when it comes to Lofi.
Any suggestions in either genre would be hugely appreciated!! :)

Electric uprights?
Thinking about grabbing an electric upright for jazz gigs, I know it’s not the same as an acoustic but they’re way more convenient. Is there any stigma attached to cats who show up with an electric upright?

Samara Joy
I'm not sure if this (wonderful) artist has been mentioned in here before, but I would love to know your thoughts on Samara Joy!!
Also, what are your thoughts on "modern" Jazz artists as a whole?

Hi-res album cover art for Red Garland - Soul Junction [3690x3690]
Reddit and Imgur compress images, which hurts picture quality. There's an uncompressed 3690x3690 .jpg here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/16AeAxLUcmyDIOij8Ea6Ur6ftSmVxgCKC/view?usp=sharing

Fingerstyle vs Pick for Jazz Guitar
Hello guys, I've been learning jazz guitar for a month now. I naturally am so used to fingerstyle, I only used picks when i was playing heavier genre. my right hand is so used to plucking especially when there are some parts where I have to skip strings, or do some weird sh1t where i'm playing notes on 2-3 strings with quick transitions. many times after failing for 10-15 takes to nail a solo I end up putting the pick away and I get it right from the first time.. anyway, should I focus on using a pick or fingerstyle? what's better for Jazz in general? because If I end up doing all the exercises in one using a pick, my muscle memory will get used to that. should I stick to what I am good at? or should I build the skill of using a pick. thanks

Questions about jazz musicians
Are there any jazz musicians I absolutely need to hear, I've never gotten too deep into jazz and would like to listen to more. I don't need starter artists I just need the best, classic, modern, foreign, etc.

Why was Fats Waller called a clown?
Why was Fats Waller called a clown?
In the 1920s and 30s, Fats Waller was a genius of stride piano.
His playing was brilliant, no doubt about it.
But honestly, I always felt a bit uneasy about his smile. Whenever I see old footage or photos, he’s grinning from ear to ear.
It’s like I’ve never seen him without that exaggerated smile. Was it just his sense of humor?
Or was it a mask he had to wear to survive in a racist society back then?...

First Big Band composition: Looking for feedback
Hi everyone! I’m a student from Singapore, and I’ve mostly studied classical music my whole life. I just started composing this year, and I’m trying my hand at my very first big band chart.
Right now I only have about 7 bars drafted. I’d love some feedback on:
- Whether the harmony is too dense/heavy
- Suggestions on how I could continue/develop the idea
- How to write good solos for each section
- Advice on writing the drum/rhythm section (I really like Buddy Rich’s way of driving a big band, but I don’t play percussion, so I’m not sure how to make it authentic beyond the usual ride cymbal + side stick)
If you’re interested, DM me and I can send the piece! Any pointers would mean a lot, thanks so much!!

Is it a bad habit to slow really fast lines down for transcribing purposes
I've been doing this a lot as I start transcribing and I wanna make sure it won't hurt me in the long run

Help me find an audio guide to jazz
Here’s what I’m hoping to find: a beginners audio guide that I can put on in the evenings to learn more about jazz, it’s history and how to listen actively. Ideally it would be a mix of information and full-song listening and would be at least a few hours long.
Similar to the vibe of a jazz radio station but more of a structured educational series.
I’ve heard about the Penguin Guide to Jazz but I can’t seem to find it available online with the information/introductions in audio format.
Thx for your help :)
