Antisemitism I am wearing my "curb your antisemitism" shirt to a music festival because IDGAF anymore
I am going to a music festival tomorrow called Just Like Heaven in Los Angeles. It's a Goldenvoice festival, so it's the same company that hosted kneecap (worst band name ever) at Coachella. I will be wearing my Curb Your Antisemitism shirt and showing off my new Magen David tattoo because I am sick of this shit. I am a proud Jew and if people are uncomfortable about that, they can go fuck themselves.

Excellent. I fully support this as long as you stay safe / can handle possible violence or people being a-holes, which it sounds like you can.
I have a palmach shirt, and I replaced the macabbi tel aviv shirt I had from my birthright trip 20 years ago that gave up the ghost. I am less apt to wear them out when I have my kid with me, but still do. I'm not a magen david necklace out kinda guy, so that stays in. So too much info and ramble, but good on you.

Sad that this is a risky thing these days
96
u/WENUS_envy May 09 '25
Agreed. Although. I was in Florida for a Pearl Jam concert 2 weeks ago and when a bunch of bro dudes walked past me, I noticed one of them was wearing a huge Jewish star necklace, and I -COMPLETELY OUT OF CHARACTER- touched a stranger's shoulder as he walked by and said "I love your necklace" and we had this poignant split second of connection and understanding. And then I told my husband what had just happened and got a little tearful about all of it.
I hate that it's a thing.

u/RedStripe77 May 10 '25 edited May 10 '25
I had a similar experience in a local Apple Store (Washington DC) when I asked one of the workers where I should go for my appointment. He turned toward me to point the way, and I noticed on a chain around his neck was a magen David, out for the world to see. As I passed him I quietly said “And thank you for wearing that.” He said, smiling, “Of course.”
We were a few generations apart—I in my 70s, he in his 20s—and would probably otherwise have had little else to say to one another. But for a moment there was a bridge between us. A very narrow bridge.
9
u/Deep_Mess4925 May 10 '25
That happened to me at La Guardia A women wearing a few Jewish jewelry pieces came up to me and complimented me on my star. Bonding in ways we never thought would happen since 1930s-40s Europe.
2
u/Atlantree19 May 11 '25
You got to see Pearl Jam live??? I'm really jealous 😩

u/hotblueglue May 10 '25
I was wearing my grandmothers Magen David necklace a couple of weeks ago when my husband moved out (we’re divorcing). I wore it to give me strength throughout the day. I was going to see LCD Soundsystem that night and was too worried about possible antisemitism to wear it to the concert. Messed me up. But I was in too fragile of a state already to deal with any hateful comments or actions.
2
u/deelyte3 May 11 '25
Wear it and forget about it. If it provokes anyone negatively, tell them “then go away from me”, or “are you from the Stone Age?”.
2
u/UnicornStudRainbow Modern Orthodox (sort of) May 11 '25
Unfortunately some people are just shit and will amp up the confrontation. Nobody needs that, especially when emotionally fragile as u/hotblueglue said she was
2
u/hotblueglue May 12 '25
Yeah any other time I would’ve hardly given it a second thought. I was worried about the crowd at this particular concert, though.
1
u/UnicornStudRainbow Modern Orthodox (sort of) May 12 '25
I don't blame you one bit. It sucks that we have to live like this, but this is our reality at least for now.
3
u/TheSuperBlindMan May 10 '25
Definitely a ballsey move for sure, especially in California. That's like going into the lion's den and poking the lion, but I fully agree!!!

No worries.
I have concerts for Ministry with Thrill Kill Kult, Suicide Commando with Beborn Beton and Lord of Acid coming up at the end of this month, I have no idea if there will be any political comments about Israel. I hope not.
But at least I know when I go to the Nick Cave concert, it will all be good.

Good for you! It’s a fun festival, I’ve gone the past few years.
Last year, I nearly had a panic attack because I assumed everyone else would show up in keffiyahs, and artists would lead anti-Israel chants.
I was pleasantly surprised! Not a single band mentioned Israel or Palestine. And I only saw one girl wearing watermelon earrings. No keffiyahs, no Palestine flags. Everybody was pretty chill - the crowd definitely skews more middle-aged, so that may have something to do with it.
Have fun! It’s a good line up this year.
9
u/ThatsAmores May 09 '25
Yes! I have gone the last few years as well. I was so scared that I was going to see some shit last year. Thanks goodness we didn't!

I have the same sweatshirt and I get nervous about wearing it in public sometimes now too - although 9 times out of 10 people misread it and say “omg I love that show!” And I have to tell them to read it again.
Anyway good luck, you’re inspiring me!

3
u/Justasadgrandma May 09 '25
I'm more conservative, but would wear one. I have alopecia areata. I recently found out that this association is more common in women, individuals of Jewish ethnicity.
Do you get very hot wearing your sheitel? I've tried wigs, but I live in a very hot climate.
2
u/ClearNeedleworker695 May 11 '25
Honestly it can get hot. That said, shorter is cooler. Or long enough to pin up. Plus: cheaper is better. In the sense that a pricy well-made human hair one will probably feel heavier than a fake hair wig from Paula Young or Wigs.com (which of course is just as kosher, in terms of covering your hair). But me, I need to be comfortable so if I can get away with it, I wear a headscarf of one sort or another.

I’m an old 80s music person, so I’m flying from nyc for this one! I had a second thought after I saw that Coachella incident, but am still going. Last year’s CW was ok - I only saw one or two keffiyahs.

Good on you! Keep us posted on how things go.
I'm constantly carrying around crossbody bags with the yellow "free the hostages" pin (I've got these on several interchangeable straps that I've had to sew these on because they keep falling off) and the dog tag I turned into a keyring (I take it off if I'm going to take another bag). I've only had 2 people ask me about them and one other who complimented me on them. I've also got a tshirt with "I'm a non-Jewish mensch and I love my Jewish friends" that I seldom wear because I don't want to deal with antisemites. I'm a Roman Catholic ally.
