Discussion $1250 Room For Rent

Welcome to Kamloops - check out this forlorn room for rent for $1250. Note the door crudely mounted in a frame that’s open to the ceiling. It has a TV that’s 6 feet off the ground & perched on a plywood shelf. Most of the furniture is homemade poorly. Metal folding chairs in the ‘kitchen’. Grim, grim times await whoever is desperate enough to rent it.

Can we normalize things being AFFORDABLE? If you can afford to own a home with a suite, get some good karma by making the price reasonable rather than SCALPING people during a housing crisis. Ridiculous.

I agree to a point. There are definitely slumlords out there, and they are scum. This lady is a good example of taking advantage of the market pricing and I hope she never rents out that awful place. Then there are young families who are just trying to make the mortgage on a home that they bought in an inflated market with stupid interest rates. Or elderly people who are struggling to make it on their CPP with higher food and tax costs and need some income. That type of owner don't owe anyone any 'deals' on rent just because they were able to get a mortgage or own a home that they paid for over decades. They also might be 'just' making the mortgage, extra insurance and taxes that having a suite includes with that rental amount.

Don't get me wrong, the pricing in this town to rent or to buy is appalling. I'm old and I was able to rent my own apartment on a part time job with a roommate when i was in my 20's and i could still eat. I don't think we even had a food bank then. A person with a full time job should be able to live in a decent 1 bedroom without starving and we need to fix this. I just don't think we should vilify every landlord, some are just making it like the rest of us are.
