When I got laid off at my last job, there are a few things that really helped keep a good relationship with the company for me. The first and foremost is the severance pay, but another nice thing is they told me first thing in the morning on a Friday and then didn’t expect me to work the whole day. I had a chance to say goodbye to people and hand over my projects so my coworkers didn’t get screwed.
The rumor was already out so I was been preparing for it already, but having all day Friday and the weekend to process it and make a plan for job hunting helped a lot. And I didn’t do anything rash like this
