That's standup stuff there! Had a foreman " heads up me" I was being laid off in a week. He had clearly faught to keep me.
I was young and broke. He saved my ass with that week notice!
Company I worked for did a mass layoff. Got a call 3hrs before end of shift to come in to the office 6:30 am.
The journeyman I was working with, as well as I knew what that meant.
Dude was like, do you wanna leave now or get a couple more hours. I was deflated af, so I left.
Come to find out, little less than a week my boss on the fire alarm side didn't know I was laid off. She was pissed, and was rehired before I could find anything else.
But yeah, that Friday morning, 13 or so of us had to be at the office that early to just be let go.
I had a viral infection that temporarily wiped out my immune system. After discharging from the hospital, I was told to quarantine at home for a week. After waiting a week to go back to work, I showed up Monday, worked the whole day, then they fired me at the end of the day. I noticed all day that there was a weird mood at the office and nobody was really welcoming me back. Word had got out and everyone in the office knew I was going to be fired that day, but they made me work a full day first. I would much rather them fire me over the phone while I was in quarantine so at least I could start looking for jobs while I was stuck in my house.
My first job as a teen at Wendy's, I got dropped off by my parents after a 20 minute drive and I was fired at the beginning of the shift. I asked if I could at least do my shift as I'd have to wait to get picked up and they said no. Had to wait for hours to get picked up.
Were there work days where you did not have to commute an hour each way to get there? Like you worked remotely other days and so they could have fired you on those days instead?
Granted, most places like to terminate employment in person because a text or a phone call is insanely unprofessional.
nope, it was a factory job doing manual labor. I was young and naive, i got hired to pack boxes for $11/hr. eventually, the dude who made way more than me doing all the shipping and receiving had to take extended leave for surgery. so they say they're going to train me up to do his job. I get a 10% raise for all this, with way more responsibility. i still believe that loyalty and hard work for an employer will be rewarded, so i do it. easy to see where this goes.
what's worse is that it was the Monday after payday, so had i known i was getting fired, i would not have spent that weekend the same way as the others when I was 21.
i was annoyed it was a monday, and also the one after payday. they could have just fired me at the end of the week and i could have had the opportunity to save and start looking for another job.
That was how my first job let me go. I had an hour and 30 commute, worked a full day Monday, then at like 5:01 they called me into a conference room to fire me. Thank fucking god too, because I got a WFH job right after making way more money. I guess the one saving grace is they did agree to pay me out for the full week.
Also got fired end of day on a Monday. Immediately went back to the restaurant and I went from fill and weekends to almost full time again within the week. It helped me keep the car I just bought.
Office jobs are shitty. I have a different one at a different company in a different industry but they're still inherently shitty.
But the schedule is more standardized than restaurant work. So double edged sword.
Tbh, in your case, I think I'd rather be fired at the end of the day. At least that way it wouldn't have been a complete waste of my gas and time to get there. Get fired in the morning and that's a two-way commute plus fuel all completely down the drain for absolutely nothing.
