I would 1,0000% prefer to be called at home and told not to come in for the next shift. Let me be shitty and bitter and home. Firing someone on the spot at the end of their shift is intentional emotional trauma. Boss knows the whole goddamn day they're going to ruin you but they don't want to schedule somebody else so they let you work. Thanks, great shift! You're fired.

There is always a last shift. It is not like she will not get paid for her work. IMO doing on the phone is cowardly.

That's unlawful in these parts.

I got laid off from my seasonal job the one year because I caught the 'rona and was way to sick to come in, so my boss just backdated the Monday I worked to the previous week and laid me off. The last day for the crew I was working with was the Friday anyway.

Some companies policies are to carry it out in person on location. So, they can do it "professionally" the right way, over the phone, could be well "that wasn't me on the phone, so I didn't get proper notice.".

So it's either do your shift, get for paid one more shift. or come in, commute, get fired, commute back for nothing. And still potentially blow up.

Lol zero notice is required for most jobs in the US, and they are under no obligation to even speak to you or give you a reason why. They could literally just text you. Unless you've signed a contract that specifies a notice period, you're at-will and have no protections. People should stop pretending that companies care an ounce about humans. They care about being sued and their reputation.

They can still have their own policies in place. There are plenty of places that have good work culture still.

Companies suck, so do employees.

People don't mind playing job carousel. Hire/Fire/Apply for benefits. People do it all the time. Once they get bored with the job, feel slighted, or don't want to work anymore. they quit by fire, by causing problems, not working, not coming in, whatever.

Plenty of people don't give a shit. Plenty of people know someone is hiring for something around the same wage for same effort/less effort of work.
