I don't know if there's a good way to do it. Just look at the comments here:

  • They had me come in, commute all the way to work, just to fire me!
  • They had me work my last shift, just to fire me at the end!
  • Why didn't they just call me to tell me I was fired?
  • It's so cowardly to fire people over the phone! Say it to my face!

People just don't like getting fired.

Of course they don’t. At will is another huge issue that we need to tackle.

Personally, I’d prefer a call so I don’t waste time and money, but I get why people want it in person.

Another avenue that’s already well-implemented is the PIP system. You’re out on it and (generally, at least) given 1-2 weeks paid where you do not work while they review. They’re firing you, but you get a heads up and can start job searching. Additionally, they fire you and you get an additional (up to) 6 mo of unemployment to job searching- of course, this depends on if you have a huge paper trail and can defend the firing.

Additionally, and this is just me being spicy, but it should be a double-punishment. If you hired someone, you get to fire them and it shows a lack of leadership ability on your part. Sometimes that’s a given, so a few will just be warnings and reviews on how to ameliorate those situations or avoid hiring those types of people. After that, you’re more fully tied to it. They get fired, you get no bonuses for that year and are also on a PIP. Impractical and half-baked, maybe, but they should have skin in the game too - especially with at will employment.

If employees are expected to give 2 weeks notice then why not reciprocate?
