Koi to Uso Series Reflection Spoiler
Finished the anime and manga and I am glad I made it to the end. This series honestly hit deeper than I expected it to. The contents in the anime do not hold a candle to what happens to the rest of the story in the manga. In the anime, it felt like a landslide victory for Team Ririna since we only see Misaki being indecisive on whether she wanted to be with Nejima or not. However, in the manga and especially after the plot twist with Nejima's illness and Misaki's deal, it felt like a free for all for who deserves Nejima more (at least to me). When it got to chapter 281, I was honestly glad that there was 2 routes. As an indecisive person, it felt great that both girls had a ending that had them happy with Nejima.
As a member of Team Ririna, the gradual affection between Nejima and Ririna felt really natural and they felt like they had a more functional relationship with Ririna giving Nejima the courage and resolve to properly handle issues like the clash between Nisaka and the misunderstandings with Misaki. Ririna also just felt like a supportive wife that loves her husband and cares about his interests and hobbies. I honestly just love Ririna so much since she just resembles a partner I would want to spend my life with.
As for Misaki, I am blown away by how complex her character was. I was looking down on her for being so indecisive and that all changed after the plot twist. The sacrifices she made to save the man she loves is honestly commendable. She did so much for Nejima and was willing to even commit suicide so she could preserve her love and not be consumed by regret/hatred if Nejima and Ririna got together. She did have a lot of insecurities which made her relationship with Nejima rougher, but I think it is okay. Her situation feels more realistic compared to the dreamy, almost perfect journey that we see with Ririna.
I feel that the endings were not made with the same effort. I have differing options on how the Misaki ending should have happened.
With Misaki's route, I believe Ririna would be more understanding of Nejima choosing Misaki since she encouraged him to leave the engagement party and make his decision after. I feel like she would say her goodbyes to their romantic relationship, but continue to be friends with Misaki and Nejima. The next thing I have a problem with is the lack of consequences Nejima faces for choosing Misaki. Just adding a few panels of the government rolling out new medical programs for his type of gene would have made the ending feel more complete. Hell, even Nejima dying early due to not being able to get treatment for his lethal gene would have made her sacrifices more impactful. The ending just feels cheap and like fan service for the Misaki fans instead of an actual alternative ending. (I understand that if Nejima dies, it wouldn't be a happy ending, but it would make sense since he chose his "true love", the government rolling out new medical procedures for his condition is also a easy, happier option).
For Ririna's route, I find this to be the canon ending and the ending that the author originally intended. Nejima rejecting Misaki makes more sense to me as it helps conclude Misaki's struggle about Nejima living happy with Ririna and her eventually hating them for it in the future. In this ending, she is able to move on and is happy with her new notice partner (Nisaka's manager).
Love is not guaranteed in this world. Misaki's parents rejected their notices for each other, but their love did not last. Ichijou and Yajima chose their notice partners due to uncertainty for the future, but they regret it. A government notice can help you find your fated love or tear you away from them. Will Nejima-kun choose his notice partner or his first love? Find out on the next exciting episode of Dragon Ball Z!
