I think this is a brilliant newsletter! Youâre so good at writing and now I know more about Athletic (is it Athletic Bilbao or just Athletic?) than before! đđ»

Itâs Athletic Club, never Athletic Bilbao.

Athletic Club, thank you đđ»
I want to make sure I call Athletic Club by the right name because when AtlĂ©tico gets called âAthleticoâ it makes me so angry đ

The word "Athletico" doesnât even exist đ€Ł and yes, calling them AtlĂ©tico makes me hella angry as well (because the club was forced to rename itself into that name, AtlĂ©tico Bilbao, during the Franco era).

There is Athletico Paranaense, and the spelling makes me uncomfortable whenever I read it.

Why not Athletic Bilbao?

u/Lehoia_ATH Athletic Club 3d ago
Because itâs not the clubs name! Itâs some sort of nickname given by unfortunately everyone, but the clubâs name is Athletic Club and nothing else.

I ask because when I googled it, this is what showed up: Athletic Bilbao on Wiki
I donât see it as that bad tho. Athletic club just means a club for athletes, this has some more emphasis on who it is. When did this start or was it always like this?
Says commonly known as Athletic de Bilbao, but full name is just Athletic Club. Very interesting tho

Well, "Athletic de Bilbao" is something else than "Athletic Bilbao". The first is saying "Athletic from Bilbao". Sure you can call the club simply Athletic, nothing wrong with that and then add that theyâre from Bilbao. The latter is a name though and itâs not the real name.
Please just accept that most of Athletic Clubâs fans and the club itself donât want to be named "Bilbao", or "Athletic Bilbao".

Nono bro I accepted that haha I was just asking a question since you are a fan. Just wanted more info

Alright. đ
You know, the club was forced to rename itself into "AtlĂ©tico Bilbao" during the Franco dictatorship because its English name Athletic Club wasnât allowed (other clubs with English names were also forced to use a Spanish name). And because we already had a club named AtlĂ©tico (from Madrid), everyone just called them "Bilbao". So this is the main reason why we; the fans and the club despise being called just after the city.
And "Athletic Bilbao" isnât the correct name, no, itâs Athletic Club and like I mentioned⊠being called a wrong name brings up bad memories.

Athletic, Athletic Bilbao or Athletic Club (official name) are all fine. The one that irks us fans is "Bilbao".
Btw, did you know how Atlético Madrid is related to Athletic Club?

Wasnât it like a sister club of Athletic when it was first founded? Something like that!

More like Athletic Club was the "parent". The Madrid club was a branch of the Bilbao one, founded by Bilbao students and businessmen living in Madrid. They share name and colours for that reason. In fact for a few years they were the same club and couldn't compete against each other.
