Confirmed Transfer Finn Harps got no money from Burnley for Oisín Cooney, only appearance based add ons and a future sell on percentage (from Dan McDonnell on X)

Sickening. At least give them 90k for that UEFA fine.

Seriously. We’re doing grassroots fundraising to pay a 5-figure fine to an organization worth billions. Absolutely insane that we need mom and pop to donate money to a team so we can survive and play ball but then these other teams can just take the players we’ve developed and invested in like we’re a sample trey. Frustrating.

Nothing makes me sicker than multi hundred million/billion euro corporations penny pinching and scrounging from local Irish football clubs for teenagers.

If this makes you sick, you should read about the scrounging that healthcare workers have to deal with

As bad as it sounds why should they pay more than what the player is worth?? FH could of always declined the offer.

And deny a player an opportunity to develop at a much bigger club? Let’s be honest that’s the dream for most young LOI players. The club has tried to do right by the player but gets completely shafted.

Like I said originally why would they pay more than a player is worth?

If you’re burnley and you evaluate a player as not even being worth 50 grand why bother

He was leaving Donegal for college regardless. It was either UCD or England.
I’m delighted for him personally. He’s a great lad. Hard working.

Surely there would need to be compensation up front?

My understanding is that he was contracted to the club and Burnley have essentially bid €0 + Future % based on clauses - so that would negate any compensation required I believe. It's also possible they are paying like 1k to get him now rather than on a free in January.
If Burnley sell him down the line then whoever buys him may have to pay a development fee, not sure if that applies here but it does in the UK, but it would be a nominal amount.

So it's the possibility of future money vs no money at all? Still don't like Premiership teams taking the piss.

u/SombreroSantana 6d ago
Yeah seems like.
Bizarre deal for FH really when they need money - ultimately it could a windfall down the line but so many factors in that, he could wind up leaving on a free and they'll get nothing.
I don't think Burnley are taking the piss, if anyone's to blame here it's FH for not negotiating something better - I'm guessing his contract was up within the next 12 months and he could have walked for nothing and this is better. And to be fair to FH they wouldn't stand in the way of a player making such a step up.

They’ll get a solidarity payment for all future transfers he’s involved in. But unless players generate decent transfer fees that could amount to literal pennies.

Would they not have been better off if they just let him run down his contract? They'd at least get compensation then.

u/coleraineyid 6d ago
Surely they are due a development fee

u/tobiasfunkgay 6d ago
Only if he was signed for free without Harps agreeing. If they bid £0 + future fees and Harps accepted that's a transfer like any other.

u/coleraineyid 6d ago
And they accepted that?! 😲

u/tobiasfunkgay 6d ago
Not saying it's right or wrong but theres always that choice between a small payout now or a potentially massive payout down the line e.g. do you take a guaranteed 10k now or a 20% sell on fee that could be worth millions. I can see where they're coming from tbh Harps really need a decent influx of cash at some point or things aren't looking good.

Likely his contract was up and he was going to leave in January anyway? Burnley pay a small fee (basically a future %) to secure him now rather than wait a few months.
Bad deal for FH but their hands may have been tied and the player was probably pushing for it, I can't see them standing in his way.

A player running out his contract guarantees the club a development fee. It’s to stop young players going on a Bosman

Why would Harps agree to this? Thought we were getting past these days

u/No-Pressure1811 Finn Harps 4d ago
He told the club he was going to join another Irish club or Burnley. The club had the option of receiving approx €900 for him for a domestic move with compensation or to go with the transfer offer than Burnley offered and hope it pays off.

This is like one of the transfers you'd have seen 10 years ago.
Burnley have really pulled Harps pants down here - the chance that Cooney ever plays for Burnley is small and they'll likely just use him as a keeper for their Under-21 side before releasing him/selling him for a small fee in a few years. Harps could very well end up with absolutely nothing from the deal.

Fucking hell. This is a travesty
