Newbie question

Am I going crazy or does the letter "u" sound a bit like the letter "e" when it's used for the formal version of "you". Aside from this small hiccup, I love learning Afrikaans! :)

if you mean the english “e”, yes they have similar sounds, the afrikaans “u” is just a rounder (rounder lips) sound.

This is it, the sound will change when you round your lips a bit more. It's a short and punchy sound.

Or maybe it's kind of like a "eu"....?
