That's pretty much how all my arguments against my conservative friends end.

The last example was when a guy told me that my opinion is not informed and stupid and I should at least Google or chatgpt it and stop refusing facts.

We googled it together, chatgpt'ed it together, I was right both times and he still refused to accept it xd

I now try to hold distance from people who can't accept that they were wrong, it's the dumbest type of humans who will never grow as a person

its so fucking sad dude, like you cant convince these people to do anything in their favour, they only follow what trump says, even if its insanely detrimental to their lives.

Its like a kid trying to drink dish washing liquid and no matter what you say they cant be convinced otherwise

It's not even about what Trump says, I'm from EU, but it seems that conservative mind is the same everywhere

As a former conservative... yep.

I had this mad cognitive dissonance going on, like I was trying to fight my childhood indoctrination. For some reason it was even harder to shake off than religion (I knew I was agnostic/not catholic when i was still in catholic HS).

A voice in the back of my mind knew those weren't actually my values, but I would just ignore it and double down.

Do you know how you ended up overcoming them? Without a doubt its pretty rare and commendable for someone to drop very deep rooted beliefs.

Just a combination of aging, covid, getting laid off and seeing past the bullshit during trumps 1st term.

yeah the american bullshit spreads everywhere, all over twitter, every conservative just seems to think insane batshit things that stemmed from america even if they arent even conceivably an issue in other countries

It's main commonality is being rigid and inflexible to change. Of course accepting new information is hard.

I had a boss who said "It's it weird how the CDC's pandemic response team knew exactly how to react to Covid?"

I really wanted to look at him and say "Say 'pandemic response team' a little slower you fucking idiot."

Sadly I never got the chance.

It's the exact same with leftists. No one on either side ever changes their mind no matter the evidence provided.

i dont agree, extremist leftists sure, but most people with leftist ideals i meet are pretty open minded to each different circumstance.

Well that could be because reality has a noted liberal bias. Should you change your mind if someone arguing with you claims that 2+2=FISH, and you carefully explain and cite how it's really 4? And they refuse to listen? And they want you to suffer? Or worse?

“Just ChatGPT it” tells you everything you need to know about this persons critical thinking and media literacy.

Just grok it!

they are more mad they get proven wrong than they are at anything else.

u/Diogenes256 2d ago

I agree. If you cannot be wrong you will not grow.

u/Ockams_Razor 2d ago

it's like conservatives constantly self owning by using Grok on twitter.

Be sure to tell them, in these moments, that you watched them change the goalpost which is an underhanded, bad-faith way to argue. They don't have to agree, they certainly won't but they need to be forced to hear it.

It's so weird too. I respect someone so much MORE when they can admit they were wrong or apologize. It immediately lets me know that I am talking to someone that isn't just thinking about themselves and their ego.

Well harder to stop people admit that they got scammed than scamming them. We are just a very prideful bunch

I think last time I had an argument with my conservative friend, it was about the 14th amendment, and he said, I quote, "the wording is vague, so I don't think they really mean 'persons' there".

Ill give you a guess on what we were discussing. I just about crashed out.

What were they wrong about?

I got banned from conservatives subreddit for replying to someone who said Trump was right about everything. I said he was wrong about everything and he is a Pedophile. They said I was being mean.

Yup been there, I've had these people tell me I'm brainwashed because my citations arent the ones they like.....even when the thing I'm citing is the literal source of whatever we are talking about. I've given up honestly I don't have the energy for it anymore like sure 1+1=5 why not? Let's just move on.

Honestly as someone who's been on the left for a while now, this isn't even just a conservative problem. There's people on both sides of the spectrum who just refuse to listen to anything that doesn't fit their world view and always go with the "you're wrong" narrative no matter how much proof you flaunt in their face

1

u/ShotAmbassador7494 8h ago

Dont be disheartened. Most people don't change their minds right away even when presented with contrary information. Change takes time

1

u/gigglefarting 2d ago

Any argument I have with my conservative friend ends with me putting him in a corner, and then he has to change the subject.

EO Wilson summed it up way better than I can, humans were never really meant to go past the hunter gatherer stage and break down as soon as someone is an other.

Civil society is only civil if no one is stoking hate, yet the Internet and instant media is constantly used that way. Imagine having a hugely bias media source that reinforces your viewpoint constantly and that's modern social media.

I think society is doomed if the extremes drive the narratives and others people

this same story can literally be applied on both sides so i don't know who to believe lmao

Perhaps you're just bad at convincing people? Have you considered that.
