I’m going to Bergen and Stavanger in 3 weeks, and a friend suggested to go visit Lofoten islands too. Would 2 full days in Lofoten be worth it?

Renting a van early September and curious if the campsites are as busy as July-Aug?

From what I’ve been reading, most are just show up and can’t be pre booked moskenes , rystad, lofoten beach camp) should I have back up plans every day incase we can’t get in?

I am researching on visiting lofoten solo around march with 3 primary goals:

• northern lights
• hiking and kayaking

but it seems the best locations for the same are quite far apart while easily reachable by car but I do not know how to drive hence renting a car is off the table and public transport seems sparse one of the options would be booking tours with pickups from hotel but many of them lack that as well any other options for solo backpacking type travellers? or should i give up the plan :-(

My girlfriend and I will be in the Lofoten Islands in early October for a week. We're thinking about renting a campervan in Trømsø and driving around the Lofoten Islands. We're doing this because we think it's fun and cheaper. Or wouldn't renting a car (€300 per week) and staying in hostels, hotels, or Airbnbs be that expensive? Does anyone have any other tips we should consider? The campervan costs about €1000 for 6 nights. Thanks for the help!

Even though yr.no is great: Lofoten weather is difficult to predict, and this is a reminder to not rely 100% on weather forecasts.

There are sometimes threads like "the forecast says horrible weather and I want to cancel my trip" - don't do that. The weather in Lofoten changes quickly, and although it may be rainy and grey for several days, it's very difficult to predict it in advance.

I'll be in lofoten for 10 days in September. I arrive by train to Narvik on August 31st at 6pm

The only way to get to lofoten is then by bus but the ride is approx 6hours +, and it unfortunately doesn't run after 6pm.

So I'm either stuck in Narvik for one night, where I've heard there's not a lot to do.. Or do you have any options? How feasible will it be to hitchhike from Narvik to Leknes, or even before leknes? So that I won't lose an entire day in the bus

Hello! I have one week of holiday in mid December and was thinking about going to Norway. I have been in Tromsø last year in February but wasn't that lucky with the Aurora spotting, only saw a bit of it. What I want basically is Aurora and whale spotting mostly but would also like to see lofoten's beauty.. I guess december is not a good time to do sightseeing in Lofoten so my question is, is it worth to go there in December, can I see any of its landscape? Or should I plan it for warmer months and go now more north again.

The title sums it up... I am organizing my resupply options for an extended version of the Lofoten crossing and would like to know if tuna/chicken/etc. are sold in small sachets such as the one in the attached photo.

I hope this isn't repeating common knowledge.

Apart from the possibility of bracken water (or actual salt water near the ocean), to ky understanding water is abundant when hiking across the Lofoten islands.

But to bring this to context, has anyone here hiked across the Lofoten and also the entire Kungsleden length and can compare the water resupply on route betwen both?

On the Kungsleden I felt I never needed to carry more than 1 liter at a given time because the water was so abundant. Is it similar on the Lofoten?

Yr.no is the official, public weather service in Norway. It’s the joint online weather service from the Norwegian Meteorological Institute and the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation. Yr has the best data and the best forecasts. The Yr appis great too.

Understand how to interpret the forecast: Weather forecast and uncertainty. The other help pages are also very good.

The weather in Lofoten can change quickly, and with coastal climate, wind, mountains, etc. it is difficult to predict the weather more than a day or two in advance. Large trends, like a heatwave or large storm, can be quite reliably predicted, but specific forecasts like “Will there be rain showers in location X tomorrow?” is often not possible.

Some good information: Seasons in Lofoten and a good overview of Lofoten weather. 

See Yr’s statistics for historical data – here’s Svolvær as an example.

There is no typical “weather pattern” for a normal day, no “rainy season” or “dry season”, etc. For example: September may be as warm as July, with temperatures above 20°C – and it may also be 5°C, strong winds and sideways rain. January can have -10°C or +10°C, but most often between 0 and -5°C.

Don’t expect to be able to plan your upcoming vacation based on the weather forecast weeks or months in advance. You have to be ready for almost anything.

For travel: The Widerøe flights from Bodø to Svolvær are generally more reliable than the ferries. Flights can be cancelled because of fog or low clouds, but not “bad weather” in general.

There are significant local variations in Lofoten. One area may be sunny, while another may have rain. When there is sea fog on the north or south side of the islands, it can be sunny and 10°C warmer on the opposite side. When it’s cloudy/foggy at sea level, it may be clear just 300 meters higher up.

Some areas with tall mountains have more cloud coverage than flatter areas without mountains. Gimsøy, where Lillevik is located, is one example: We often see clouds across the sea where there are 7-800 meter tall mountains, but there are no clouds near our house, since there are no tall mountains to “hold” the clouds.

Check the web cameras on Yr for current conditions: Search for a place, then click “Other conditions” for the web cameras – and also northern lights forecast, UV radiation, etc. Here’s the other conditions for Lillevik.

For the next 90 minutes Yr also has an animated map that shows incoming rain. See the map for Svolvær, showing rain clouds for the next 90 minutes.

We have a webcam at Gimsøy, which has taken photos every 10 minutes since 2015. You can check the archive and see what the weather has been like for the last 10+ years.

Hello, me and my 3 friends will be reaching Tromso on September 26th and rent a car next day and roam around lofoten islands, mainly for short hikes each day and return back to oslo on October 2nd early morning flight.

Can you please help with following: 1. Weather predictions for those days ( did a bit of research and everyone said weather is unpredictable but what is is mostly like? ) 2. Chances of northern lights ( google says northern lights can be seen from late september) 3. What do you suggest we rent fuel car or EV?

I am traveling to Lofoten this week and am a little bit distraught because I was hoping for beautiful hiking and views and it seems that every single day it is going to rain. Is that typical for August? Does this generally mean rain all day or is it possible that the sun will make an appearance?

Hi! We encountered a not so happy farmer when walking on the road near Hellosan. We were just about to start the red marked route there (see map) but the hiking route was completely blocked. The farmer said the hike does not exist anymore and that he has mentioned this to mapmakers several times. Said it was private property. Complained about the number of hikers increasing each year.

Wasn’t the best encounter either, don’t wish that for anyone else so who/where can we report this?

We're planning a 3–4 night trip to Lofoten in early October — is it safe to drive that time of year? We're mostly interested in exploring the natural beauty (not big hikers, but short walks are fine). Any tips on things to do and what kind of weather to expect?
Would really appreciate any advice!
