Which audiobook version?

I have a copy of the old audiobook of Lonesome Dove narrated by Lee Horsely. I just saw that they are coming out with a new audiobook in September narrated by Will Patton. Is it worth waiting for the new audiobook?

Lee Horsely is AMAZING. Might be the only audiobook I’ve ever listened to on regular 1x speed 😂

I listened to Horsley's version of LD and Patten's version of DMW. Both did a great job but I think I preferred Horsley. He really gets into the characters and makes them each feel unique.

Lee Horsely is the GOAT. His voice helped me fall in love with this story and characters. It never needs a remake.

Lee Horsley’s version is, by far, the best version of any audiobook I’ve ever listened to. His portrayal of Gus has to be one of these best portrayals of any character ever.

Completely knocked it out of the park.

I thought people hated the old version?

I just finished it a month ago and Horsley does a great job. It feels a little awkward at first because he fully commits to each voice but by the end of the book I really enjoyed it.

I am in the minority apparently, but I HATED Horsley's narration. The ragged breathing, mouth sounds, and audible inhaling were SO distracting to the story. I actually super imposed the voices of Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duval over his because I had seen the miniseries enough to drown Horsley out. I would have never finished the book otherwise. Also, if you pay attention to his narration, he flip flops the voices, intonations, and manner of speaking between Call and Gus regularly. I would absolutely wait for the new version.

You are not in the minority. I did not enjoy Horsley at all.

I really tried to love it, but could not. I may listen to the new narration at some point just for comparison purposes.

I haven't heard of Lee Horsley before, but Will Patton is amazing and I will listen to this book just because he's narrating it.

Patton is a fantastic narrator! He does a lot of Stephen King audiobooks and I love all of them!

Will Patton is an incredible narrator -- one of the very best. His readings of James Lee Burke's novels are some of my favorites. Very much looking forward to this release.

I love the Horsley narration, and it actually dissapointed me that the voice wasn’t similar in the series I watched afterwards. I like that there’s a nother option though, will be nice for a reread someday

I am probably in the minority… but I couldn’t listen to Horsley. It sounded like he was trying to speed read and then take big gulping breaths in between sentences. And maybe that’s just in the preview, but I hated it.

I did find the book on tape from the early 90s on YouTube by Wolfram Kandinsky and THAT was well worth the listen!

I’ve never listened to Lonesome Dove on audiobook. But I will say this. Have you hung out at r/audiobook? Those folks basically have four books they push incredibly hard:

  1. Project Hail Mary.
    2: Dungeon Crawler Carl.
  2. Red Rising.
  3. The bobiverse.

Although I think LD has replaced the bobiverse at 4.

I know some new version JUST came out.. it must be amazing so I would say go with that version.
