How to Make Your Own Lures: A Guide series

1. What kind of lures can I make?

  • Crankbaits (Lipped and Lipless), Jerkbaits (Lipped and Lipless), Swimbaits, Poppers, Stickbaits, and other topwater lures are all possible, with new lures being invented all the time! Below is an info graphic with a few of the most popular types of fishing lures, but there are many more!
These are just a few common lures that can be found in most tackle boxes, but there are dozens of other types to discover!

2. What do I need to get started making hard body lures?

  • Lure making is not as complicated as it may seem. Yes, power tools such as drills, dremels, lathes and sanding machines all help, but none are necessary. To start all you need is:
  • Wood, to carve into the body.
  • Tools (at the very least a knife to carve, a small saw, and a drill are all very helpful)
  • Sandpaper to finish the bait off smoothly
  • Terminal tackle, including hooks and split rings
  • Screw eyes or a through-wire (a single wire going through the entire bait that serves as your hook eyes and line tie.
  • Weights so your bait sinks, in the form of either split shot, glued into the body, or lead, poured into a cavity.
  • glue/sealant, epoxy, and paint
  • OPTIONAL: Lip (for crankbaits) Rattles, details such as foil, and power tools, and an airbrush for more smooth

3. What do I need to get started making soft plastics?

  • A mold, which can be bought, or made from silicon.
  • Plastic resin (plastisol)
  • Dye to give color to the lure
  • OPTIONAL: Glitter, multiple colors for a more detailed bait

4. What wood should I use?

  • Popular lure making timbers include balsa, basswood, cedar, cypress knees, jelutong, beech and some types of pine. But there are thousands of other options. Look for something easy to carve, lightweight and resistant to denting. It’s easier to get all your components aligned properly if you start with straight, square blanks.

5. What paints should I use?

  • For brushing on paint, a wide variety of artist acrylics and poster paints will work. Just make sure the paint and clear coat will not interfere.
  • For airbrushing, water-based acrylics are the favorite, due to their ability to spray evenly and produce a good coat while remaining non-toxic, and non-flammable.

6. How do I seal my wood lure?

  • Wood is like a sponge, it soaks up water. Once in, water works its way through the wood by capillary action until the wood is waterlogged. This kills action, weakens glue and is the most common cause of paint failure.
  • Super Glue can be used, where the glue is applied over the entire body, left to soak into the wood, and then the bait is sanded smooth.
  • Epoxies are two part synthetic resins that cure hard when mixed. There are some that are designed for penetrating and hardening wood. One example is Envirotex Lite (aka “Etex”). Etex is also great for clear coating painted lure bodies and makes a very strong adhesive.

7. Where can I buy lure parts?

8. What epoxy should I use?

  • Some use prefer to clear coat them with a two part epoxy. Others prefer to use a two pack automotive polyurethane over airbrush acrylics. And still others dip their lures in moisture cure polyurethane.

Below are some some more sources for learning how to build lures, additionally, guides from some of this subs best lure mentors are going to be rolling out very shortly.

Question Striping paint from spinner bodies?

I am rebuilding a bunch of old blue fox spinners and need to strip the paint off of the bodies. What’s the easiest way to do that? Before I was just torching them and burning the paint off but that takes far too long.

Successful Catch I 3D-printed this lure and caught fish! (video of entire process in the comments)

Here's the video of my entire process including catching fish. This was a fun project. I walk through my process of downloading, 3D-printing, assembling, painting, clear-coating, and catching some fish with this whopper plopper-style top-water lure. I've 3D-printed plenty of crankbaits and soft plastic molds, but this is my first top-water attempt and this thing had no problem landing bass.

I'm still working on the fundamentals of lure building so I decided to make a batch of baits to get some repetition in.

Spoon Teaser tabs?

Im making a batch of spoons, and im trying to find a place to buy teaser tabs, or those red fin shaped pieces of plastic placed on split rings with the spoons hook.

I have some red and yellow plastic on hand im gonna use to make my own, but I would prefer to find somewhere i could buy these, but none of the tackle stores I've checked out stock them. Anyone know a place to buy these?

Question 1/2" wood

Where do people buy their wood for lures? I picked up some 1/2" poplar from Medard's but it's not actually 1/2" (actually 7/16"). Anyone have a recommendation? In an area where we have Menards, Home Depot and Lowe's. I picked up some actual 1/2" bass wood from Hobby Lobby but it was a premium price.

Thanks for any help!

Soft plastic How do I know if my soft plastic will swim?

I have the soft plastic made on Onshape and now that I look at it I am unsure whether or not the tail will "flutter" the way I want it to. Is there any way to check?? It is a grub style lure and its tail is 0.8mm thick and it looks fairly thick but other models I've found online are even thicker so I am stuck on the size. Many people say that trial and error is the best way to test but I would obviously love to save myself some time if there are any ways. Thanks so much.

Forgot to add this is but are there any materials better than plastisol that I can us for something like this? Once I have the mold made I was just going to use plastisol but that stuff is fairly thick isn't it? Thanks again!

Soft plastic Corky style ?

Has anyone made a lure like the Paul Brown corky??

I loved corkies on the bay, but now I'm bass fishing almost exclusively. They'll definitely hit the corkies I have, but I'd like to make/have a smaller version.

Before I start down a path of misadventure, I figured I'd ask if this was even possible

Question BARE minimum stuff i need to start

Just woke up thinking, i should make lures, but dont know what to do, well i did do some research and most of em have big machines and stuff like that, but im too broke to buy that so i decided to just go do the harder way (which i think is more fun and rewarding) by just carving them out. Any tips and stuff i need to know? Ill do some more research so i get as much knowledge as i need. Thanks guys!

Jig Powder Paint Troubleshooting

Thumbnail

Hey everyone. I'm still new to powder painting and I'm getting inconsistent results. I want really saturated, bright colours but after curing the paint coating is really thin on top and it dripped down. I can see the lead through the paint like it thinned out and ran down during curing. Second pic is some booby jigs from another batch that hung by their hooks. You can see how thin the paint is in some spots, but it needs that thicker coating to get that vibrant colour

Now I'm wondering, is this a problem with:

A) too much paint. B) temp too low or too high when dipping C) curing process mistake (325-350f for 25min)

Or maybe a mixture of things. I'm wondering what you guys look for when dipping your jigs

Soft plastic Does anyone have any soft plastic ideas? Please PM me! I'm fine with paying!

I had two ideas for soft plastics but then I ran out of ideas. I just want plastics that will work for any type of fish in QLD Australia that you chose. I made a bream lure in CAD that I like the look of and I have another idea for something prawn like but after that I'm lost. If you want to make a lure for bream, Jack's, flatties or any other fish in QLD just send me a PM and if I like your idea I'd be happy to compensate. Whether it be in money or in a couple of the plastics. Thanks so much. Also if you have any tips that I may find useful in my goal of making my own plastics please let me know. Thanks so much!
