MLR College Draft
Didn't see a post for the draft so figured I'd start one. I can't be the only sicko watching.

Interesting news on MLR
Buried in this article is the fact that the salary cap is going down which is positive IMO. If you cannot financially afford to keep teams afloat, adjustments have to be made. I’d rather keep salaries at a sustainable level, keep teams from folding and keep the league alive rather than strive for unsustainable salary cap. Now let’s hope the add ons are also controlled.

Analysis Home States of US-born Draft Prospects
Like yesterday’s post, this is based on the ‘hometown’ of all prospects, not eligibility. There are likely many more US eligible prospects than the 86 actually born in the US.

Draft and level of worry
Draft is tomorrow and the draft order isn’t publicly known. That’s not normal! On a scale of 1-10 I’m at a 7 of another team not being involved.

Analysis Home Countries of the 2025 Draft Prospect Pool
Couple of things:
- The number in brackets reflects the change in number of prospects from the 2024 prospect pool.
- This only takes into account home town, rather than eligibility. It's likely that the US-eligible number is well over 100.

MLR secretly acknowledges Miami’s departure
If you watch MLRs new video they released giving their “marketing” strategy a pat on the back….. there is a an animation of MLR teams across the country. MIAMI is NOT included in the graphic and the CA Legion is.
Why has no official comment ever been made? And why is MLR so quiet when monumental changes are being made. You would think they would want to get in front of this like adults real League Office would. Yet here we are getting the same from them, nothing. At least they’re consistent.

Bantz Merging MLR with SRA?
As much as I would love to see a flourishing domestic league in the US with the worlds best players, would it not be better to take a more unified grass roots approach to growing Rugby in the Americas?
International rugby will always be the peak of rugby(unlike NFL, MLB, NBA etc). It’s a sport built on national pride. USA rugby should build a format that follows and supports this.
Condense the the amount of teams to 4-5 based in the biggest rugby regions in America. Grow the game in these regions first. Invest in these clubs from the ground up with youth teams all the way through university players. Make the teams heavily domestic focused, growing and building domestic players.
These teams to play in Super Rugby Americas against teams from Argentina, Chile, Uruguay, Brazil, Paraguay in a round robin format with playoffs and finals at the end hosted by the highest ranked team.
It will look much like the old Super Rugby with SA, Aus and NZ.
It gets top domestic talent access to playing rugby on an international stage. You can still get behind your city/states team while also having a bit of national pride playing against teams from other countries.
Thoughts?

Why does the MLR continue to do business with Thierry Daupin?
I’m usually only an observer and occasional commenter on this subreddit, but, now that the dust of the NOLA Gold collapse is settling, I find myself wondering why the MLR continued to do business with Thierry Daupin? Obviously the answer is cash is king, but if we’re looking at his track record, can we say he has helped grow the league in the right direction? From what I understand, he was involved in Austin for their original downfall before Gilchrist swooped in. Then put Utah and USA rugby itself in a bad position due to the now defunct partnership with Toulouse. And then there’s the most recent debacle in New Orleans. Never would I have guessed that they’d go under with the culture they’ve built thus far, but here we are. Do we think we’ve seen the last of Terry in the MLR? Looking to hear some thoughts from the community

When new teams come about, should they move to smaller Areas?
Hey everyone, if this is a dumb or bad idea just let me know, as I've watched MLR and just got into rugby this past season. When new teams come about, instead of trying to move them to big areas like LA or Miami and New York, why don't they try to move teams to smaller areas with more passionate fan bases? Don't get me wrong if there are great fan bases in popular areas by all means keep it, but do you guys think it would be smart to have teams in smaller areas that are passionate about sports, say like a Columbus, Pittsburgh, or Knoxville? At the end of the day it's about putting people in seats, does it matter if that happens in a larger or smaller area as long as a lot of people are consistently coming out to matches?
