Watching The Irishman again tonight (bought the DVD last week)

Just a little scene that I'd forgotten from the first watch.

Russell comes home covered in blood with his hair all over the place and his wife looks at him with a sort of "oh Russell, not again!" expression on her face.

Then she's like. "Let's get you out of those clothes and into the shower - don't forget your shoes".

i love this movie. one of my all time favorites. and i dont care about the "not so good" cgi. overall the movie was pretty good and entertaining. De Niro, Pesci and Pacino were awesome.

Yeah it’s still a great film. They took a pretty big gamble with the CGI and just went for it but that’s what great artists do, they try new things, explore new things. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes not.

It’s still thoroughly entertaining and there are some amazing scenes and performances.

I love the one with Pesci covered in blood, the blank look on his face, the love and loyalty between him and his wife. We hadn’t seen him do anything violent or even really associated with violence, that’s really the only time. And still yet it was just the bloody aftermath.

Also Pesci’s performance in general, amazing. It took courage and great ability to do the complete 180 and give a performance of a quiet, reflective, measured character.

And the car/fish scene near the end. Oh my god it’s so dark and funny, Al Pacino is hilarious in that scene.

I was kinda expecting Russell to erupt into unexpected violence at some point. Just based on him being played by Pesci.

I've watched it multiple times and tbh I don't even notice half the shit the internet has been whining about for years.

It would have worked if they'd just said that Frank was 45 when he first met Russell. Made him an older father. The CGI could make Bobby look 40-something easily. Just make him a guy who lived until he was 100.

I feel if you watch this movie in 3 segments , it’s a great movie . Sort like a mini series .

Harvey Keitel was great , Romano was good and Carnivalle was excellent. The cast was all around good . I wish they could have edited out the DeNiro scene at the deli.

It's a shame that most people can't get past the deaging and a couple of disappointing scenes (De Niro beating up the store owner being the obvious one), because this movie is a real gem. It's filled with scenes that only get better every time you watch it, just like the one OP mentioned.

I watched the movie with my best friend when it came out, he found it good but not tremendous, and I've been trying to get him to watch for a second time for years, because that's when you understand what a masterpiece it is. I watch it once a year and love it more and more each time.

Yeah, the scenes where Frank is an old man really got me in the feels.

He's still a gangster in his mind. But he has only one henchman (the big black guy) these days who basically just helps him from place to place while he's arranging his own funeral and no-one gives a shit about him. His daughters don't want anything to do with him and he just talks to his priest and his care worker. He outlived all his associates and that's that.

agree with every word of this. Overall, the movie is close to a masterpiece. Scenes between Russ and Hoffa and then Frank and Hoffa at the banquet thing for Frank …….. just incredible.
Same with the Tony Pro scenes.

I agree, they could’ve even had him just narrate that he gave the guy a beatin’.

I agree with you, and I feel the same way about The Alto Knights. No one likes it. It gets pissed on (especially here) because it's not the most historically accurate, and yeah, it's not Goodfellas or Casino, but I absolutely love DeNiro's portrayal of Vito Genovese. His role as Frank Costello is nothing to write home about, but he's an absolute lunatic when he's in Vito Genovese mode- hisb speech, his mannerisms, his paranoia. It's so freaking entertaining lol

Makes me wonder if Jimmy Hoffa had people killed...

Good point. That might make a good thread.

Keitel even though he had a small supporting role was great. Pesci was fantastic in it. Bobby d I wish they got a younger actor to do the younger parts. Overall a solid movie

Maybe I should give it a rewatch, but I don't think I've ever been more disappointed in a movie. The CGI is the obvious reason, and it did take me out of the movie, but also, I feel like there is a really good 2 hour, even 2 and a half hour movie in there. But 3 and a half hours?!?

The CGI, plus knowing that Frank Sheeran is a liar and nearly none of the movie was true, really made that runtime tough for me. Scorsese didn't need Jimmy Hoffa and the extra hour of runtime to give Hoffa's biography, he could have just made Pacino a union leader who ends up getting whacked and made the entire thing fictional and I think it would rank among his best.

For a second when he walks in/locks eyes with wifey, you get a very quick glimpse of some real menace in Russ's eyes
