Didn't Mafia 2 get a 74 on Metacritic when it came out? This seems pretty consistent with the franchise getting 7/10s when it comes to the general reception, except for Mafia 3
6
u/MatttheJ Aug 07 '25
It's definitely a series where this sub is not going to give an accurate view of it's reception, this is a sub dedicated to the franchise. Nearly every sub dedicated to a game franchise loves the old games in said franchise and think they should be 9/10 or else the opinion is invalid.
Most of these franchise subs also over criticize whatever new game comes out and refuse to also give it 0/10 because they don't want to admit new games are sometimes as good as games they have nostalgia for.
2
u/Necessary_Crazy_8587 Aug 07 '25
Yeah I don’t think critics ever really liked this series but mafia 2 was such a good game and it’s crazy to think that it only got a 74
1
u/TardDegen Aug 08 '25
Many critics thought the open world was wasted. Which is a fair point. Rockstar could afford to fill the world with side activities. My 228 hours on steam prove the vibes of the world alone could carry so much, you can spend the time just admiring all the nooks and crannies of the world.
81
u/Gunfot Aug 07 '25
I'd wait for Steam reviews by players. Media reviews aren't trustworthy any more.
I am not saying TOC is bad, just trust your fellow gamers more rather than media outlets.
74
u/Dry-Koala9451 Aug 07 '25
"our fellow gamers" would review bomb the game because one female npc in the forest has manly ears or something in their opinion so I'm choosing to trust these more
34
u/MatttheJ Aug 07 '25
Dude, our fellow gamers might just review bomb something because they decide before it comes out that they hate it... regardless of if they even play it.
19
u/kargethdownload Aug 07 '25
Exactly. Idc about critics, but people put too much faith in modern gamers
13
Aug 07 '25
Especially when people make stupid steam reviews for steam points now, for some reason....
9
3
u/Janderson2494 Aug 07 '25
Yeah exactly, too many shitheads in this space these days. I'll trust the journalists that actually played the game.
2
u/Damagingmoth47 Aug 09 '25
I still prefer user reviews by a large margin. I do not trust Media outlets at all, I think they are dishonest more often than not. 7/10 for Concord and 9/10 for Veilguard are examples. Concord lived 11 days, Veilguard killed its studio and arguably the franchise. Neither deserved more than a 5/10 in an honest review.
I don't blindly trust user reviews either for your exact reasoning, but the difference is that I can trust user reviews to be blatantly honest. If they hate the game because it has a woman in the same postal code as a gunfight and those are the only negative reviews, that's great. I can disregard the negative reviews and focus on what points the positive ones make.

u/realspitfire69 Aug 07 '25
metacritic never disappointed me in 20 years of gaming
6
1
u/Therenegadegamer Aug 07 '25
Same here Metacritic isn't the be all end all but it definitely is a decent bit of info and not entirely unreliable like some of these comments are saying
-1
u/Additional_Elk8358 Aug 07 '25
The critics had mafia 1 a 66 and Mafia 2 a 74 😂 Two bonafide classics. I thought the last remaining gamers who still listened to critics stopped after they embarrassed themselves with Veilgaurd tbh
4
u/realspitfire69 Aug 07 '25
never played the original mafia but the scores for mafia de and mafia 2 are fine
i would rate them just a little bit higher probably 8/10
1
u/_end_of_my_rope_ Aug 07 '25
you're missing out. DE is such a bad game comparing to original. even mafia developer Daniel vavra was shocked how bad it is.
for example, ending of original mafia will leave you sitting in chair and thinking about Tommy's words for at least 5 minutes. in DE they ruined his speech so badly as you're watching fast and furious 18.
1
u/realspitfire69 Aug 07 '25
i liked DE; very interesting story
i will not play old ass games anymore too many new games releasing that i wanna play
1
u/_end_of_my_rope_ Aug 07 '25
I know you will not, I'm just saying you're missing out. DE is watered down console turd unfortunately.
1
u/BastetMeow Aug 09 '25
Original is really a gem. I believe it's using same engine than Hidden&Dangerous 2 which was ww2 semi military simulation. Combat was much more dangerous and fun with no cover shooting mechanics and auto regenerating health.
1
u/saooth7 Aug 07 '25
Huh, where does Mafia 1 have a 66 score?
1
u/Additional_Elk8358 Aug 07 '25
Im talking about the OG, metacritic
2
u/saooth7 Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 07 '25
that's either PS2 or XBOX version, PC has 88
I have no fucking clue why they show the worst versions of the game first
2
u/SweetTooth275 Aug 07 '25
That's true, but the issue is that critics are paid and opinionated and "fellow gamers" are just subjective. In reality no opinion matters, only yours to yourself.
1
u/Friendly-Tough-3416 Aug 07 '25
Yeah I don’t trust critic/user reviews, but If I had to pick one I’d choose user reviews.
1
u/VincentVanHades Aug 07 '25
Pro reviews are good for one thing only, to find out if game runs like shit/is broken mess, or if its fine.
0
u/Objective-Phrase-336 Aug 07 '25
I am incredibly excited for this game and genuinely believe it will be amazing.
But you are 1000000% right. I have seen many 5/5 and 9/10 games that flopped. Let's wait for the real users and check their unfiltered reviews.
19
u/Therenegadegamer Aug 07 '25
Finally they're up so people can chill out now it was still shitty of 2K to put the embargo this late though
1
1
u/Useful_Respect3339 Aug 07 '25
It’s really not. You should never pre-order entertainment products based on hype. It’s also not limited, so you won’t hurt yourself by waiting.
1
u/Therenegadegamer Aug 07 '25
I only pre order based on my own instincts and I have not once regretted a pre order
1
u/Sir_Lee_Rawkah Aug 07 '25
What embargo
5
u/Therenegadegamer Aug 07 '25
Embargo is the time the press is allowed to post reviews before launch in this case it was only 1 day before the official release or a few hours for PC
2
u/Sir_Lee_Rawkah Aug 07 '25
Thanks.
I personally don’t see why reviewers should get advanced copies but I guess some people needed to make a decision before they buy and want to buy it right on opening day
3
u/Cuban999_ Aug 07 '25
If reviewers didnt get advanced copies then reviews would release a week/weeks after release and that'd defeat the whole purpose of having reviews out. Which is usually to give the game good press (or at least that's what the developers hope for) to help people decide whether or not to buy it when it releases
2
u/Silver_Requirement94 Aug 07 '25
At least they didn't hold the embargo until the release day. Typically it can be a sign that the developers believe in their game when they allow early review copies and lift the embargo a few days before release

u/LimeySpud Aug 07 '25
I agree, I really enjoyed Mafia III and appreciated the developers tried something new. Now reviewers are being critical Hangar 13 has gone back to basics with this new game.
The devs simply cannot win.
1
u/TardDegen Aug 08 '25
Buggy launch and the vibe is very different than the other mafia games. I never bothered to come back after lending it from a friend and was pretty disappointed. It had these annoying graphics glitches, all the time, back then still. I might pick it up again tho as I see much love here. But it is still an outlier I would argue.

u/Alduin790 Aug 07 '25
At least now we don’t have to worry about the review copies not being sent out debacle

Well done Alex Cox (I think that’s his name). He said this was his idea since he joined and Mafia 2 was in the works.

u/Objective-Phrase-336 Aug 07 '25
I am hyped since it was revealed, but let's wait for the real consumer.
A lot of those companies post 8/10 all the time, that means nothing, a lot of them are forgetable games to say the least.
For what we see, we are up to a great comeback, lets wait and see.

The only Mafia game I didn’t care for was Mafia 3. Hangar 13 did an amazing job on the Definitive Edition and reeled the series back in. I can’t wait to play this tomorrow.
2
u/X86fun Aug 07 '25
Original mafia 2 is the best one it captures the era you play in the mid-40s to the late 50s great from how things looks sound and the dialog is great. The action is great.
1 DE is very good, and 3 just ok worth it if cheap.I hope mafia 4 comes back
0
u/SweetTooth275 Aug 07 '25
Mafia II does NOT capture the era, it's an unrealistic fanfic, cliché but it has nothing to do with how 40s and 50s actually were.
-1
u/TardDegen Aug 08 '25
Mimimi. The game slaps and makes you feel like living in a different world. Sure it is over the top and satirical at points. And it takes creative freedom. It captures the nostalgia about this era. That is the point.

u/Secret_Woodpecker177 Aug 07 '25
Im playing the game right now and it’s amazing. The 60fps is life changing on a mafia game. The only problem are the cutscenes are sometimes really laggy

1
u/KralizecProphet Aug 07 '25
The game's either above average, or this time around the money for reviews was satisfactory. We'll see what actual real people who decided to pay for the game will say. I already decided I'll buy the game when it goes on sale for $15, as I did with Mafia 3.

u/MiamiHarris Aug 07 '25
Reviews comes from PC version. Hope the performance is good on consoles too.

Ah, you mean literally the best pert in the series? Sorry bucko, your subjective perception is rubbish so beat it.
2
u/Necessary_Crazy_8587 Aug 07 '25
It’s the lowest rated Mafia game for a reason, critics have never really liked this franchise but they rated it even lower then.

I think alot of people who love the mafia franchise played older titles in preparation for "the old country". I also did . I will say now that the game has released to playthrough before review rating it. After I finished the prologue of it I'm not going to lie , was thinking it's horrible and mafia 3 would be a masterpiece in comparison. Played for another 40 mins and my opinion done a complete backflip. I'm really enjoying my time now. I hopefully stay this way or even if better my experience. It is different in many ways as it borrows from alot of other games . At first I was against this but the more I think about it , it's a good thing as now it feels more like a video game than just an interactive movie. Just my opinion like all you will have yours. Let's all hope the game is great and it also does great 👌

u/Important-Double4960 Aug 08 '25
My early impression after playing the game, would be that its very close too consider it my favourite in the Franchise..
They nailed the Mafia-formula with it being a masterclass or benchmark in storytelling coporated into a video game. It had the best scope/lens of any of the games so far... It is breathtaking to look at.
cons: l its not really innovative in terms of gameplay and mechanics, but that's never been the philosophy of making these games.. you play them to experience a great story. 🙂

u/Designer_Astronaut52 Aug 09 '25
(MINOR SPOILERS IN THIS REPLY) One of the best games I’ve ever played, easily up there with red dead redemption 1 and 2. Due to somewhat clunky animations, I can’t give it a straight 10, but I’d give it a 9.5 since not only the story, most of the gameplay, and characters were spot on, (apart from Leo galante, which I didn’t feel like resembled himself at all.) but more so, this game represents the direction hanger 13 is going, which was a very big concern of mine and probably a lot of other fans too. And (speaking on my own behalf of course) I can confidently say that it is the right direction. Bravo to everyone involved.

Whatever gets us Mafia 4. I really want to know what the plan is after the end credits scene of 3- we won’t play as Donovan, he’s not in the mafia or really even affiliated. Maybe we’re being setup for a story with Enzo’s son that takes place later in the timeline but man, the first time I watched John shoot that guy for jfk I stood up, hooting and hollering.

u/mastershakeshack1 27d ago
Unfortunately, these aren't the numbers that matter because
A. You can't trust any games journalists these days
B. The only thing 2k games cares about is money so the sales numbers is what's gonna tell us if we get Mafia 4
That being said I personally really liked the game and feel like its money well spent
2
u/Psnaps 26d ago
People don’t realize we were back since Mafia 1 DE. This is just a prequel to make another original after Mafia 3. DLC’s will be made for TOC and we’ll see Mafia 4 in probably 5-6 years if I were to guess.
Not to mention since TOC people will buy the other games as well to play them all sales for them are skyrocketing.

u/GutsxJuri24 Aug 07 '25
Eh. Game is meh
1
u/TardDegen Aug 08 '25
Dont spoil please. What makes it meh? How many hours are you in and what were your expectations?
1
u/GutsxJuri24 Aug 08 '25
I was hoping for a gritty dark story or at least the MC be more alpha like. And hoping to have some open world just a little for exploration of side quest or mini games, but thats me.
1
u/TardDegen Aug 08 '25
Got you. I will go into the story open minded and will look what I can take away. It is a shame they build beautiful worlds and dont put nice things to do in them. Maybe it will come with update or DLC

Game reviews are inflated asf usually so 8/10 IS like a 6/10 That being said i dont trust reviews there are many Games that has low reviews and years later everyone realised that it was a great Game or even a masterpiece
6
2
u/Therenegadegamer Aug 07 '25
Nah this is about in line with the previous games score wise it isn't inflated
2
u/SweetTooth275 Aug 07 '25
As you'd expect on this website someone objective speaking sense is downvoted to oblivion.

Sir this wasnt very ingroup of you to say. Read the room and dont be different.
-3
u/soulwolf1 Aug 07 '25 edited Aug 07 '25
Waiting for player reviews. The media isn't reliable.
I refuse to pay $50 for an 8-10 hour game where games like robocop unfinished business (expansion) has the same amount of hours for way less.
Like all 2k games, this will be on sale within a month.
2
u/sonnyempireant Aug 07 '25
I don't trust the vast majority of players to be mature with their 'reviews'.
-2
u/soulwolf1 Aug 07 '25
That's fair, but to also be fair a lot of player reviews are legit and often mention issues the "pro" reviewer don't and are very blunt and don't sugar coat the issues like these professional platforms.
-6
u/JrSince96 Aug 07 '25
76 on Metacritic and saying “are we back” is kinda sad.
1
u/TellEmWhoUCame2See Aug 07 '25
Yea i think another reason this game is getting these reviews is because its also only 50 bucks. Had this game been 70 or 80 i can see the scores being lower because much more would have been expected for the price but 50 dollars for a game that many are saying is relatively short u cant really nit pick because you are essentially “getting what you paid for”. If this game has no bugs or serious gameplay flaws then what can u really say thats bad with the game?
1
u/Necessary_Crazy_8587 Aug 07 '25
Mafia 2 is a great game and has a 74, shut up lmao
1
u/SweetTooth275 Aug 07 '25
Mafia II is a piece of shame for the series, the fact it had 74 is incredible generosity.
