What makes his fate unclear is the official cover story for his death in Chicago. It’s stated he fled there for help from associates but they turned on him and killed him. They reportedly cut his hands off and smashed his face in, making him unrecognizable. This is more than likely where had Leo stepped in to help
It’s clear the injuries of the man who got killed were to make the body unidentifiable, therefore covering up that Joe is alive. Galante must’ve found and struck a deal with Joe to help him fake his death. In return Joe would seemingly be forever in servitude to Leo and not allowed to contact ever Vito again
This is true, we can’t really trust much about the story since Joe is alive. That being said it does give a bit to think about, who were the associates Joe had in Chicago?
Could be someone we’ve never met, or it could be someone we know of like Eddie. This opens up some possibilities on who the unidentified body could be, or it could all be made up by Leo who knows. Maybe the next main line game could explore this?
