Mafia: The Old Country Could someone explain to me why there is a group of players who cannot understand that there is a large portion of players for whom the story is just as important as the gameplay?
Someone recently asked me why I bought the new Mafia game when I could watch all cutscenes for free on YouTube. This is such a stupid question. I bought this game for the GAMEPLAY and the STORY. Is this really so hard to understand? If I just watch the cutscenes online, then I will never experience the same emotions/adrenaline/adventure.
Sure, there’s not much gameplay compared to other modern open-world games, but THERE IS gameplay, and it doesn't just last for one fucking hour. Like c’mon, this is not some kind of Kojima type game...

The gameplay in a video game generally has to be good enough to enjoy. A good story can only carry a game so far and since this game is very straightforward with not much else going on outside the story(things like exploration, RPG elements, PvP, loot, etc), the gameplay should be enjoyable enough to want to play it.
This game has…fine combat. Stealth is mid, the shooting feels fine, like a 360 game. There’s more than a few “walking simulator” sections too, so I don’t blame someone for just choosing to watch the game on YouTube. Story-first gamers exist but they’re not the majority by a long shot tbh.
Don’t get me wrong though, there are some objectively mid/bad games I love because of the story/characters…like Deadly Premonition lmao.

Yeah the gameplay is alright, from shooting, driving, riding, but stealth just feels dead. During my playthrough during stealth missions I walked (not crouching) infront of enemies and nothing happened, and many cutscenes were unfinished as Enzo would clip through vehicle mirrors, but over all I guess it's a decent game

It’s got a good story, even better acting, and great graphics. The gameplay is like Mafia but without the immersive repetitiveness of having to drive the whole thing. A lot of time is cut out and the further it goes the more it speeds up. Makes it feel more like a movie or a novel than a game when they don’t keep you in the loop and have the story change outside your experience . I would have liked to have some more immersive side missions with basically any of the supporting characters, we needed some hours of that. Instead we got the bare minimum and a largely unused but lush, beautiful and accurate feeling dead open world that seems like it must have been cut for budget or time/both.
I love the game but I’d like to get some dlc to get to experience the open world they crafted much more. Racing missions won’t cut it for me. I want more character depth.

The gameplay is very Mafia. I feel like there’s better mechanics out there but this game is a fantastic story and has a lot of emotional depth to it. I’m sure that the stealth bit could be more complex

There is another group who does not seem to understand that some people want a compelling package. The story can be whatever, but the mechanics are woefully underdevelopped in this game. Janky stealth, janky gunplay.
It is what it is.

But in this case the story and the gameplay were bad? I mean, it looked great, I guess…

I didn’t even think the gameplay was bad, I like how the shooting and driving feel, and choking people out in stealth amuses me a lot.
It’s not crazy special or anything but I had a good time with it the whole way through.
