History ⏳🕰️ Long lost giant ore boat James Carruthers, lost in the great storm of 1913 has been located
Dave Trotter and the Undersea Research Associates, have located the remains of the giant ore boat James Carruthers, lost in the great storm of 1913.
The Carruthers was the biggest ship still missing on the Great Lakes, the largest vessel lost in the 1913 storm and the biggest vessel in Canada at the time of her loss. She was brand new when the legendary storm sent her to the bottom of Lake Huron. Crew reported that the paint was still tacky in their staterooms when she set out on her final voyage from Fort William to Midland, Ontario.
The 1913 storm was by most measures, a 500 year event, with sustained winds of 75 mph and waves of 35 ft.. It sank 12 major ships and took 250 lives. The Carruthers was the most mysterious of the losses, leaving few clues. She was last seen in the northern end of the Lake off Detour with no evidence of her until days later, on November 12th, when her wreckage started washing ashore on the southeast end of the Lake, 175 miles from her last sighting. Most wreck hunters consequently, believed she could be anywhere on the Lake. Twenty-two Canadian sailors lost their lives when the Carruthers disappeared.
Trotter and his team found the ship earlier this year during their regular work to map the bottom of Lake Huron for shipwrecks. Unlike most wreckhunters whose searches target specific shipwrecks, Trotter maps high probability areas of Lake Huron to discover whatever shipwrecks they contain. Using this method, he has discovered well over 100 Lake Huron shipwrecks since the early 1970s.
According to Trotter, they immediately knew they had found the Carruthers when her giant hull crawled across the screen, since no vessel anywhere near that size is still missing on Lake Huron. Interestingly, the Carruthers is not where many wreckhunters, myself included, expected her to be. She lies in US waters well off Michigan's thumb and like many of the other ships lost in the great storm, she turned turtle and lies upside-down on the bottom.
The James Carruthers was built at Collingwood, Ontario and launched in May of 1913. At 529 ft. and 7862 gross tons, she was a leviathan for her time. Ships of her size and era sailed well into the 1980s on the Great Lakes, but she served less than six months.

Discussion 🗣️ joining the homeless community
i'm on a count down and looking for resources. not to keep me off the streets, as that inevitable at this point, but for where to find community in all of this. ive been on the streets before, i know it's not all a bad. you find the things that make it bearable, like community.
if anyone knows of any tent villages or even some kind of social media meant to assist your maneuvering through homeless life here, I'd appreciate it!
(or if you have an extra room and dont mind letting a disabled 27y/o female free load while i figure my life out, you're welcome to DM me)

Discussion 🗣️ Off roading advice (U.P.)
I'm looking into doing the Nichols trail and the Cliff Mines up to the overlooks and maybe the camping spot. My question is how gnarly is the Cliffs? I drive a stock 4x4 SR5 Tacoma and it is my daily. I've made the rocket range after a rain with no issues but The Cliffs looks to be a different beast. Anyone with familiarity have advice?

Discussion 🗣️ Illinois highway racers on 94 and 69
Hello Michiganders, Missourian up here in your beautiful state for the weekend. Last night on 94 before Kalamazoo/Portage, and again on 69 this morning on my way to Lansing, I was passed by anywhere from 2 to 5 Illinois-plated cars at a time, seemingly racing each other. Trying hard to be cool cars, too, like Chargers and whatnot. Is this is a common thing you all deal with or is there some circlejerk car show happening this weekend?

Discussion 🗣️ Matt Hall is why Michigan public schools don’t have a budget for next school year. This guy is holding up our budget being passed for 50 days.
Matt Hall’s House missed a legally mandated budget deadline. Instead of delivering a full plan, he’s dragging things out to wedge in a major roads funding agenda. His budgeting method hides spending details that schools need for planning, and now we’re stuck in total political gridlock.
Matt Hall is using this delay to push his “fix the roads” agenda. He insists that road funding has to be bundled with the school budget and not everyone agrees. (I certainly don’t agree, they are separate issues) Governor Whitmer said the roads plan was only one piece and thought the process was already too slow.
This kind of budget stalemate lands hardest on low income schools and many are already laying off staff right now.
It’s basically like telling someone who’s barely scraping by to “just hold tight” while their rent is due and groceries are running out while richer neighbors have a cushion.

Events🎉🥳 Grand Rapids cat cafe nearing 1,000 adoptions milestone
GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Happy Cat Café is going all out this year to celebrate its eighth year in business.
The downtown Grand Rapids space at 447 Division Ave. South will welcome guests with extended opportunities to meet adoptable kittens, browse limited-edition merchandise, purchase themed drinks and more.
The festivities began on Aug. 17 with an all-day Birthday Bash featuring cuddles and special events. Kitten Week will continue through Saturday, Aug. 23, with additional opportunities in the cat lounge.
This year’s celebration marks a significant milestone for the café, as it approaches its 1,000th cat adoption since opening in 2017.
“Reaching eight years and almost 1,000 adoptions is incredible,” said owner Kati Quarto. “This celebration is our way of thanking the community, our rescue partner, and everyone who has helped us give cats a second chance at a forever home.”
