Interested in learning more about the kinds of people living in Monaco

Hi everyone:)) I am playing with the idea of moving to Monaco. I am especially interested in learning more about the kinds of people/attitudes/personalities typically found in Monaco. What does the cultural landscape look like? Are people open? Pretentious? Can newbies get in with the local crowd?

I look forward to hearing any insights!

You need to go there and see for yourself. It's a massive concentration of an international crowd of very wealthy people and also normal local working people (usually Italian and French origin) in a very small space. Married couples of whom one moves there for work usually end up divorced. There is a LOT of high end prostitution. A sunny place for shady people, as someone once said. I'd better not say any more.

Yes, they're Monégasque now but of Italian or French origin. (There are very, very few actual original Monégasques). I personally have friends like this. I think if you're born in Monaco but not already Monégasque you "passer Monégasque" at the age of 30 and start a very comfortable life indeed with many privileges.

Very interesting. I can't believe there is high end prostitution (I can only assume mainly Russians) in such a small country. How do you spot them?

There are catalogues in the Casino for example. It's pretty discreet.

if you have the means to live in Monaco I would do it in a heart beat (I have the privilege of being born and raised here and it's honestly the best thing my parents have ever done for me) but obviously it's not for everyone

As a place to grow up it's incredible: beaches, great weather, fantastic sports facilities and clubs, etc...Are you trilingual?

If you can afford to live there you already know what kind of people live there.

From Monaco, now living in the US. I grew up there and still have my friends and family so I come back regularly. You have 5 types of people:

  • the French/ Italian who works in Monaco. Usually normal people, that don t realize how much it s a privilege. Nothing crazy about them. Same people as Nice, ventimille or else. Quite open.
  • the monégasque: likely has never left the country to be elsewhere, of if they did, came back later to get a safe spot in any company in Monaco. Quite open
  • the resident: likely grew up there, have a lot of privilege, will likely stay there because of the benefits. Quite open
  • the retired/ wealthy person: has made fortune elsewhere, usually come to Monaco to enjoy the safe context. Out of touch
  • the prostitute: not much to say here. Go to Sass

Overall, yes it s easy to get along with everyone but connection are related to where you hand out so I recommend you go out and mingle.

Just got home from there. It may not be as easy as it sounds. You may already know this, but they’ve got some strict rules on living there and becoming a citizen. One of the rules is you need at least 500,000 euros in your bank account at all times. Seriously.

this rule is pretty easy to pass by though
