It's impossible to say. Kanggye and the Chagang Province in general is a black box.

If you think Pyongyang is reserved for the elite and difficult for people in other provinces to visit, you haven't heard of Kanggye.

It is possible he was purged and executed, but the use of anti-aircraft artillery seems far fetched.

Worth noting the ZPU-4 is basically a big machine gun, the bullets are 14mm, a little over .50 cal (12.7mm) - it'd actually be EXTREMELY practical to execute someone with it

I wouldn't really believe anything south Korea's intelligence services say about North Korea; it's always execution by anti aircraft artillery with those people.

We don’t really know but I am going out on a limb and say that even if he were executed, it wouldn’t be with anti-aircraft weaponry. That’s incredibly impractical with tremendous room for collateral damage, they are absolutely not anti-personnel weapons meant to hit an individual with any degree of accuracy.

As far as I am aware the only source for that rumour was a US government backed organization. Treason can be an execution-worthy offense, if he was truly found guilty of treason, but you wouldn’t just be summarily executed the same day you were arrested.

Honestly I could see it happening for the spectacle. If you could choose your execution style (which is very humane) you’d want it to be extremely quick and super flashy. It’s just the west that took it out of context honestly. Imagine granting someone a merciful and quite frankly epic death only for the imperialists to slander it. Tragic.
