Compatibility Best alternative to Nest Hub?

I want to put a screen on the wall that I can use as a control for my nest devices that are in my house. I have several cameras, 2 smoke alarms, 2 thermostats with heatlink, and a doorbell cam.

Now I could just use a Nest Hub for this. But I don't like it.

Does anyone have any experience using a regular tablet for this or am I beat just getting a Hub?

My issue with the Hub is that it is a bit bulky and I want to put it on the wall and also it's more restrictive in terms of apps and functionality than just having a regular Android tablet.

Nest doorbell video issues

I've been having problems with my nest doorbell recently. I can occasionally get a clear picture but more often lately I've been getting an offline message, or video that looks like this. Any ideas? I've ordered a replacement but would like to know if I'll have the same issues with that one..

How can I change the appearance of the thermostat screen? (4th Gen)

I got a new 4th Gen because of my old thermostat being deprecated. I picked a screen layout during the setup process but now I want to see what the other ones are like. I've looked on the device and in the Google Home app and cannot seem to find where the settings for this live.

Searching online has led me to seemingly outdated guides that are incorrect.

Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance.

Just bought Nest thermostat 3 weeks ago, not a clue which generation it is.

We finally made the switch to a Nest thermostat from our 1970s style thermostat before going on vacation. We bought it at Lowes because it was the least expensive one we could afford. We went with just the basic one, not a learning thermostat (can't afford, and don't need with someone home all day). I have no idea which generation this thing is, or how to tell. The box doesn't specify, and I can't find anything in any of the "about" info, either.

I personally never would've cared which gen I had, except when I came to this forum to research an unrelated question, I'm seeing a ton of posts about Google turning some Nest products into "dumb" thermostats in October. Now I'm in a bit of a panic, because I had a professional install it on top of the cost of the thermostat itself, and I'm worried I just spent all that money on something that won't work as intended in a couple of months.

Can anyone help me figure out the generation of this thing, and tell me if I just wasted a bunch of money?

Doorbell Doorbell died after 3 years

Is 3 years a normal lifespan for the Neat battery doorbells?

We’ve had a Nest battery doorbell for 3 years. It lost connection to Google Home and won’t factory reset. It still has indicator lights come on but otherwise it’s unresponsive. After talking to Google Nest support they said it’s toast and offered a $50 credit for a new one.

Is this fairly common with these doorbells? I was kind of surprised that it is broken already after just 3 years.

Looking online I saw quite a few posts from other owners with the same issue as mine. It makes me wonder if there’s some know issue with them that cause them to fail eventually.

I’m not real keen to buy a new one after this if this is our experience with it. Might be time to try a different brand.

Nest new 4th gen install

We had a 3rd gen and after 7 years it suddenly said “low battery”. Talked to support they said it’s failing. So we got a 4th gen to replace it, but it’s not turning on.

I bought a multimeter to test the wires - from Rh to y/G/W it reads 27. From Rh to C it says 1.7

What’s wrong?

Thanks!

Thermostat Nest Thermostat Gen 3 needed 24 hours to charge old battery

Post image
2 Upvotes

Just wanted to share that I bought a used Nest thermostat generation 3, and I guess the battery was old. I thought it was dead because it wouldn’t let me link to my Nest account. But after about 24 hours the error went away and I was able to link

If you get an old Nest thermostat and get the dreaded battery error, make sure to charge it for a really long time, even 24 hours, before thinking about replacing it

Camera Price increase alternatives

With the recent price increase to $200 for the yearly subscription, does anyone have any alternatives they are planning on switching to for cameras/doorbells? I was looking into getting a simple window camera that I can place outside my window that will capture everything up front but was curious to see if anyone had any recommendations?

Google Nest Thermostat having problems

Hey all,

My Nest thermostat in my apartment has been acting up for almost a year and we have tried everything to fix it. It’s driving me crazy. We will set the temperature to let’s say 68 degrees on cooling mode. Every time without fail once it reaches 68 it will start spewing hot air. It’s not on heat/cooling mode. We have been having to switch it back to heat at like 63 degrees to turn it off. Rinse and repeat a couple of times a day. Very inefficient. Can anyway help me trouble shoot this?

Camera Cameras Hacked?!

Idk if anyone else has experienced this, but one of my cameras has randomly resets itself after I've left my house and it's inside my house. My alarm never went off and the camera seems to be untouched. The same happens to some of the footage that got erased.

Nest thermostat (1.4) cooling when below target temp

Hello. My nest thermostat seems to be having some issues, it's continuously cooling, even when below set temp.

Additionally, I noticed the energy dashboard hasn't updated since the 17th (today is the 20th)

Not sure if they are the same issue or multiple problems?

Any suggestions?

Nest tech said older thermostats will be stripped of all function, even manual control

My Nest (gen 2) thermostat suddenly lost wifi capabilities last night. I've been talking to a Google tech and they said that Google remotely stripped my thermostat of its wifi capabilities because of the upcoming end of support in October. I asked if I could still continue to use it manually, and the tech said that Google will strip all thermostats of even manual function after October. Basically, they're not just ending support; they're remotely shutting them all down to force an upgrade. I have two questions:

1) Is there a way to prevent Google from remotely accessing my Nest and, in essence, breaking the thermostat whenever they want to? Like if I disconnect my Nest from my Google account, will it maintain its manual function and just run for another few years until it actually breaks on its own one day?

2) From an HVAC/hardware perspective, would this be a bad thing? I assume it wouldn't be any different from the old box and lever wall controls we grew up with? ...Is there any benefit to actually upgrading to a new Nest if I don't care about the wifi features?

Change users on nest

I am buying a house, the current owner the deceased family, that has nest smoke detectors and nest doorbell (perhaps even thermostat but I can’t remember). What I read online is current owner needs to do factory reset. Is it possible to do this without the previous owners information?

Doorbell Nest doorbell not playing sounds on other Google devices

I have a Nest doorbell that was originally installed at my previous house and worked as expected.

When I moved and installed it at my new house, it's not playing the chime sound on any of my Google devices (Pixel phone, Google tablet, and Nest mini speaker).

I've been through every setting I could find on the Nest app and the Home app to make sure notifications are enabled. I set it to override do not disturb mode. I made sure all of my devices are added to the same home address.

All of the devices I have are showing up as online/connected in the Home app and the Nest app. I'm kind of at a loss for what to do next to troubleshoot. Any advice or suggestions would be very much appreciated!

Nest doorbell gen 1 UK

I have a wired Nest doorbell Gen 1.

It probably needs replacing as the screen is a bit pink after I replaced the battery inside.

A few questions though; - are the newer doorbells compatible with the voltage etc

  • if Nest decided to discontinue the doorbell, as I smart enough to put the wires under floor boards- are there any other doorbells that would be comparable with the voltage, signal etc? (The chime is also wired)

Thermostat Nest Power Connector Wiring Help

Hi, all. I've got a Nest Thermostat I'm trying to install as a replacement for an old Honeywell thermostat. The furnace is a Newmac WAO/GAO Oil/Wood Furnace backup. The old thermostat was a two-wire using red and green wires, with another white wire that isn't connected to anything and doesn't seem to be a C-wire (although I could very well be wrong).

I'm quite confused here; the letter coding on the furnace doesn't match up with what I'm expecting based on the documentation and videos, and I don't want to risk shorting anything out.

Can anyone provide a little guidance on which wires to connect for the Nest Power Connector?

Edit: Added pictures! Kind of an important detail, it turns out.

Thanks!

Nest Thermostat E (UK) functionality.

Looking at Google's documentation on the Nest E (UK version), it appears that the heat link device is meant to replace an existing wired thermostat and the heat link itself measures temperature, not the Nest E itself (presumably it's just a controller for the heat link).

I don't have a wired thermostat, I have a 2nd gen. Nest, with heat link, and can't find any documentation on how to replace that with the Nest E. Currently, that heat link is installed in a cupboard next to the boiler, and so if it's replaced with one which measures temperature then the temperature will be higher in that cupboard than elsewhere in the house and the heating would shut off early. I guess that I'd have to run a wired connection of some sort to the boiler from whatever spot in the house would be best for the heat link.

Does anyone have any info. on what would be needed here?

Thermostat Honeywell to Nest? Help Please.

Every video I see online there is an R wire or C wire. Is there anyway I can replace this with Nest (only for heat) and where do these wires go in Nest?
