[Request] Need something to make me laugh again...
I've been in a bit of a funk for the last month, fighting worsening depression everyday, and spending my days having to slap a smile on and act my way through work.
But the rest of the time? ...
Anyway, I've been trying to find something funny to watch, something that will make me laugh out loud, and take me out of my head for a while. I keep looking through streaming services, but either I've seen movies a few times or they just don't do it for me...
So please hit me up with your recommendations... What are your go-to comedies?

Superstore!
It's light and funny. If you like sitcoms that doesn't require a lot of thinking, then it's for you. I have rewatched it at least two times lol

I watched a few episodes of the first season, but couldn't get into it. Frankly, I'm surprised its still on.

Since you mentioned looking through multiple streaming services, I’ll suggest Shorsey on Hulu. Similar premise to Ted Lasso which will inevitably come up, but this is set in minor league hockey in Canada. It’s funnier, less self serious, and just as touch and feel good at times.
4 seasons of 6 half hour episodes, so a quick binge. I’ll watch any random episode if I need a laugh or just want to hang out with the boys on the team.

Great rec, top 5 favorite show and somehow better than Letterkenny which I didn’t expect
3
u/dual-ity 6d ago
Letterkenny feels like it started out primarily as Jared Keeso’s vision and slowly became a shared vision of everyone involved, becoming a thing of its own in the latter seasons. Shoresy is pure Keeso.

u/Moonchild924 6d ago
I just finished Wanderlust with Paul Rudd & Jennifer Aniston, I thought it was very funny. Only place currently streaming it is Starz.

u/bubbyslup 6d ago
Corner Gas. Canada's favorite sitcom. It's stupid and silly but very very clever. I binged all six seasons over a couple of days and it did wonders for my funk. It's almost Canada's Seinfeld in that it's not really about anything. Just enjoyable.

u/NonchalantSavant 5d ago
Great show. We also really enjoyed Kim’s Convenience (another terrific Canadian sitcom).
1
u/bubbyslup 5d ago
That's also a very funny show. No politics, no bullshit. They both make for a good escape.
2
u/misslilytoyou 6d ago
It's such a cozy and comforting show! Am American, but I love this series! Has been on serious rotation lately due to my own depression.

I’d try some of the K dramas on Netflix, Crash Landing in You, extraordinary Attorney Woo or Vincenzo. They are entertaining heart felt and funny.

u/Jasper455 6d ago
After Life — Netflix, series. Dark comedy about a man coping with loss, staring Ricky Gervais. Good depression show
Match Game — Hulu (newest host/season). This game show has been around as long as Doctor Who. Martin Short is hosting now and killing it.
Great British Bake off — Netflix? Just an easy show to binge when you feel shitty

watch "Unbreakable kimmy schmidt" if you like to watch a brainrot comedy, where you think "what in the hell is going on and why".

u/melita3953 5d ago
Schitz Creek--don't know what streaming service it's on, but it took a while to catch our humor button. a slow burn, but then we were laughing out loud.

Can't believe I had scroll this far to see this!
I will add Motherland to this.
I can watch these every time I need a giggle .

u/flippantphalanges 6d ago
Arrested Development (Netflix) and Taskmaster (YouTube, start with s19 to see/hear a familiar face/voice)
oh! or Schitt’s Creek (Prime/Hulu I think)
4
u/UserNameChanged 6d ago
I second Taskmaster UK! There’s a reason why it’s being made in so many different countries. That show has made me laugh until I cry. It has to be the UK one though the US version is not good.

It's worth adding that many people take a little bit to get into it. I wasn't that impressed immediately, it was amusing, but it didn't blow me away. I moved on.
It came back up in my feed several months later, and I gave it another chance. I laughed my ass off. I don't know if it was a different season, or just that I just "got it" that time, but it is now one of my absolute favorites.
1
u/flippantphalanges 6d ago
yeah, some seasons are better than others but s19 was excellent and has jason mantzoukas. it’s just extra funny. so that’s why i suggested starting with that one bc it’s a banger!

Not sure what's on netflix these days but here's a wide range, you're sure to find something you'd like:
Best in Show, Tokyo Godfathers, Clue, Tucker and Dale VS evil, What we do in the Shadows, Game Night,.
Comedy's tough. It's extremely subjective and what might be widely beloved might be something you absolutely hate.

u/Gregory_D64 6d ago
watch both Chef, and Hector and the Search for Happiness. they're my go to depression movies. they both deal with someone who is experiencing some legitimate (but not distressing) adult life issues and they work to change their life. both adventurous and ending on a very realistic and uplifting note without being trite or condescending.

u/frazzled-mama 6d ago
Chef is truly such a life-giving movie. I'm having a crappy day today....I might go rewatch it again. Thanks for the reminder.

Hey OP…. Can I ask what the last few things were that made you really laugh?
Give us a basis, and I can probably recommend some great ones.

u/Only_Mail_1853 6d ago
Modern Family is funny and definitely pulled me out of my own funk for a minute. I remember The Good Place from Netflix being pretty funny, but it can also be a little emotional. I found it wholesome.

Movies that made me laugh-out-loud: The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, Young Frankenstein (always good for a rewatch) anything Monty Python especially silly walks, Horrible Bosses, just to watch Jennifer Aniston do something out of character, Tag, to name few. Hope you feel better soon.

Check out Tacoma FD. Same guys that did Super Troopers and it still makes me laugh after watching it over 10 times. I’m the same way watching drama too much so I have a lot of Stand up in my queue’s. John Mulaney is great.

u/Always-Never-1234 5d ago
We were looking for same. Last night we watched “Eurovision” on Netflix. Will Ferrel as part of Icelandic duo trying to make it into the contest. I’m usually a BritBox type girl, but we needed to laugh out loud. This did not disappoint!!!!

Portlandia if you like smart funny satire. It’s hilarious to me. Or the Poop Cruise

Brooklyn 99 is on there. Starts in season 3 at the moment. Worth it just for Andre Braugher. Helped me the first time I had severe depression/anxiety

Can I suggest that you need to watch something that's slow , languid and slice of life ?
I found K Dramas very good as it helps me engage with these characters, slowly. Most of the stories take time to establish the premise. They also then take you on a journey along with the characters.
Here are some low key , fun series
Because This is my first life - A down on her luck writer desperate to find a place to live through a series of events end up room mates with a guy . They both learn to heal through each other , learn surprising fun things about love... Supported by an excellent funny and fun cast ... This is a beautiful heartwarming exploration of warmth and connection
Hometown Cha Cha Cha - Simple premise. A dentist makes a gaffe in a city and ends up moving to the countryside. Found family, beautiful location and you will want to live with these folks .. on the way you will solve the 3 mysteries of Gongjin 😁
Twinkling Watermelon -a heartwarming time travel story that just explodes with love warmth and caring. Yes you will find the story very familiar . But the heart of this story will make you care for the characters.
Business Proposal - based on a Webtoon a woman helps her friend out on a Blind Date and absolute chaos ensues in her life when the blind date turns out to be her CEO ! Lean into the slapstick comedy of this Drama and its simply fantastic!
Enjoy the journey

PEACEMAKER
great laughs, definitely pulls you out of reality. Even makes you want to learn the dance.
It's always Sunny is also a great show to watch, especially if you're from the East Coast. It's too real and too ridiculous and laugh out loud great.
Alternatively, a show that I watch when I'm depressed sometimes, that's funny / interesting / not too much is Supernatural. It's a real easy watch and has plenty of humor. I like that it doesn't require a ton of mental commitment each episode.

If you can, watch the UK show Ghosts. I really didn't think I'd like it but it really made me chuckle. Also the IT crowd made me genuinely laugh out loud.

The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt (Netflix) has crazy high joke-density and is super easy to watch. And would that we all have the same indomitable spirit as Kimmy. One of the few shows I've re-watched, and probably will again. (FWIW Girls5Eva has a similar vibe.)

Not really a true comedy, but if you don't mind subtitles I can't recommend Midnight Diner on Netflix enough. I actually found it on Reddit while looking for a relaxing show to watch before bed because what I was watching also got me tensed up and feeling depressed.
It's a Japanese show about a diner in the red light district in Tokyo open from midnight until 7am. The chef will make anything his customers ask if he had the ingredients. You start to get to know the quirky customers, who are from all different walls of life, starting with what food they order. Their stories are very poignant, and often very sweet and heartwarming. Sometimes there are difficult times, but I never felt it depressing. Rather a connection to the human condition. It's a cozy escape from life in small 30 minute episodes. The music is lovely and relaxing and it's a true escape.

Hey, I'm sorry you're going through a rough patch right now. Depression sucks and it's tough when nothing seems funny anymore :(
But yo, 21 Jump Street is a solid choice! That movie's genuinely hilarious :D

Last One Laughing on Prime. Many countries have their own versions now. Comedians and actors locked in a room and they can’t laugh or they get kicked out.
Germany is my favourite series as a whole. UK was really good too.
Just adding something different from sitcoms.

u/Mad_Mitch6 4d ago
Happy Gilmore 2 was really good. But you've probably already seen it. But if you haven't seen the first one in a while, you should see it.

This one is a wild card but if you like it you will love it ! It’s called “Still Game” and is set in Scotland. You may need to watch with subtitles as the accents are authentic and very earthy. The premise doesn’t sound especially funny but it is GOLD. Two pensioners in their old age in a run down estate in Scotland getting by as best they can. The humour is in the story lines, the scrapes, and the friendships. I’m some ways they don’t have much - in other ways they have everything.

Ryan Hamilton "Happy Face" was pretty funny to me he makes jokes about city vs small town life. And Taylor Tomlinson? I think that is her name, she jokes about the patriarchy

I know your pain, and I'm so sorry you're living with depression. Mine is major depressive disorder, and it kicks my ass on a regular basis.
I just watched a movie starring Jason Bateman called Bad Words on Netflix (it's leaving on Sept 15) and laughed so hard I almost wet myself.
Tommy Boy, Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck are all side splitters as well.
Hope you work through your depressive episode soon. Keep fighting!

The Good Place got me through the dark times. Not everyone likes it at first but keep going! Dead To Me and Santa Clarita are both wild and engaging. Psych is also one of my favorites but it's not on Netflix (Peacock)
