Clinical Advice Pain Meds

My post was removed from /r/EMS so I figured I’d post it here.

I’m a new medic and have run into a few medics withholding pain meds for patients who say they’re in pain due to “their vitals being stable” or they seem annoyed by the fact you have to do extra charting to give opioids. I rode at 2 different departments during medic school and ran into the same thing. I don’t understand why medics do this. If the patient is in pain, treat their pain. The money for the meds aren’t coming from your paycheck. I’m not saying just give them out to anybody who even mentions pain but if the patient continues to say their pain is significant then treat it. End of my little rant.

Career Advice Finished EMT School 6+ months ago, just got hired as an ED Technician. What should I review?

Hi everyone! Super psyched to be starting my first EM job in about 3 weeks. I finished EMT school back in February, so my knowledge isn't non existent, but it's a little rusty. I want to put my best foot forward as I begin this job, so I'm trying to make myself a review list. What topics from EMT school would be most useful for a future ER Tech to review?

In case it helps, the ED a level 1 trauma center in a pretty big American city.

Career Advice EMS in Cochise Co. Arizona (what to expect + where to apply)

Upvotes

So I dont normally do this, but I am at a loss when trying to find out what agencies cover 911 in Cochise Co. and if going to the FD is worth it. I am moving over the there in a week from a hugh call vol 911 sys, and am trying to find depts to apply to. I was wanting some input due to not knowing the area and 911 vs IFT there. Also, pay rates or expectancy??? I am in medic school, and having an agency that would sign to allow for clinical rides would be a plus. I just dont know where to start.

NREMT NREMT issues?

Idk if anybody else has had this situation, but I took an EMT class over the summer that had the first attempt few for the registry exam included in the tuition. I passed my class and my psychomotor test, and completed literally everything on the initial application except the payment (since that was included in the tuition). I’ve contacted my instructors and even the program director for the college the course went through. They keep telling me that it’s a website issue and that I just need to wait around for the ATT letter to populate in the portal, but it’s been almost a month since my class ended. I’m not really sure what to do right now, but I’m getting really antsy about it since I already have a potential job lined up with the agency I did clinicals with.

Beginner Advice Social concerns

So I'm starting volunteer EMS in the Spring, hopefully getting my EMT license before I graduate university. I'm studying public health and I'm super committed to EMS, but I worry about joining the community.

I'm a transsexual man, and despite living in a relatively accepting area (Northern VA) I wanted to see if any other trans EMTs/paramedics could share their experiences. I'm confident that I meet the physical requirements and I feel good about where I'm at knowledge wise, I'm just concerned that I won't fit in well at a firehouse. I'm a few years into my transition, but I'm still a ways away from going stealth, ifykwim.

Legal Obtaining Court Documents?

Hello!

I won’t get into any background, but in 2020, when I was 19, I was convicted of 2 misdemeanors. One was disorderly conduct, one was possession of criminal tools (spray paint). This was in OH. Class started Monday in my 15 week program, and I was only informed yesterday apparently I have to get my court documents for this?

1) Does anyone have any idea how to get these documents?

2) Im in PA, will this make me ineligible? Did I waste $2k in tuition?

Thanks!

Testing / Exams My first test went... not as good as I expected

Hey y'all. I am currently in my EMT portion for firefighting and its... a lot. I will need 80%+ to qualify for the national test (I have never been a good test taker nor the best in school :( ). I took my first exam yesterday and only got a 77 :(. I studied intensely every day, made a fat flashcard set and even went to Quizlet to see if anybody had any other good practice tests, etc. I felt fairly confident before going in. I noticed the test was a lot of case study/scenario questions, while this entire time I was studying the basic terms, no critical thinking. I emailed my proff yesterday asking for guidance on study resources, but he has never answered a single email of mine since the start of the semester, so I don't think I'll get an answer until late next week when I can see him in person. I'm going to see if my school offers tutoring for it as well. Otherwise, are there any good websites you all recommend? Advice? Anything is appreciated, thanks!

Career Advice Interested in EMS

I already graduated college with a degree in exercise science as I originally wanted to go into PT or OT. But I got into a PT clinic and hated it, I worked there for a little over a year and quit to pivot into teaching however it’s not all I thought it would be either. I would still like to work in a healthcare field if possible as I do like helping people (I didn’t feel fulfilled in PT as all we had were people with back pain and knee injuries) and I was looking into going to EMT school. How can I make sure this is a good fit for me or does anybody have advice?

NREMT Candidate Applications

I’m at the end of my rope dealing with NR. They’ve offered no help while the rest of my classmates have taken their exams and gotten interviews.

I have not been able to complete my candidate application because of endless error pages once I get to verifying my email address. Has anyone had this issue and been able to resolve it? It’s been weeks of trying to contact anyone over there and I’ve gotten little to no response.

Beginner Advice Looking for study tips, Please

Just finished day 1 of class.and was told they don't tell us what is important for the NREMT exam. They said we have to go chapter by chapter and thats cool. Im reading the chapters but there is so much information that it is difficult pinpointing but are the most important points to learn for the test.

I get it is an ever learning field and I am.prepared to learn but also want to prepare for the NREMT test.

I am.second guessing my decision and am hoping I could get some tips and suggestions on what I need to hit harder than some.of the other areas. Not sure if I am.alone feeling g this way.

TIA

Cert / License Looking to start out

I've done some reading on what is required to get an EMT cert in Iowa recently. I'm currently studying for a doctorate in psych at Iowa but I feel like passing NREMT would be an amazing life skill. However I'm currently taking a 20 credit load of somewhat difficult classes and I'm not sure where to start. I have a fixation with this so I would like to start asap however it seems my only viable options would be to wait for the next semester and fill it with the 9 credits from a local college near me or wait till the summer to do a fast tracked course - any advice is appreciated, thank you

Physical Health Building muscle and strength

I’ve been an EMT for a little over a month now and I’m constantly feeling useless when it comes to moving patients (I work IFT so a good chunk of my job is moving patients on and off their beds to our stretcher) . I’m 5’7 and weigh about 110 pounds on a good day. I can definitely feel that my partner is annoyed with my lack of strength and It’s embarrassing having to ask for help from nurses to simply move even just a 200 lbs patient. What are some good workout routines I can start doing to build muscle? I know I need to gain weight as well but it’s a struggle for me one of the reasons being that I’m on adderall and it makes my appetite non existent. Any gym bros here who have meal plan and workout advice? 😭

School Advice Titer results after Tdap booster.

So I think I know the answer to this but I have to ask. My dumb*$$ got a Tdap booster then went to get my blood drawn for titers through LabReqs order less than a week later thinking it wouldn't skyrocket my B pertussis results... Well it did, to double the positive baseline of >1.04. The Tetanus x5 and Diphtheria x4 the baseline of immune. The EMT program I've been communicating with, I was looking to get into in their next program beginning of next year (one of multiple due to recently becoming unemployed from a separate field and trying to get my career pivot moving), they pushed me a packet just in case someone dropped out of the class starting in September. Naturally I got all excited and was like "okay need to get this vaccine that is due and titer test done ASAP". I have my paperwork for the Tdap and my results that just came back today.

Questions being: Is the positive a good thing, it appears to be flagged as High on the lab results, or am I going to need to retest after a month? In anyone's experience are they likely to accept it with my most recent Tdap vaccine paperwork from the pharmacy or deny my application? Dr Google is giving me mixed signals. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

**Update I did email the application coordinator asking as well after submitting the required documents. They require the paperwork in person on the first day of drills and would like to get ahead of it.

NREMT NREMT website says I passed but I never got an email

I took the NREMT today and was cut off at 70 questions. Thought I did terribly. I checked the website an hour later and it told me I passed but I never got an email. Is this legit?

School Advice general study tips/resources?

I am doing emt school after my undergrad and really enjoying it but admittedly the quick pace is a little tough for me. I'm managing for sure but feel like i'm not actually internalizing most of the info long term. I've been taking long notes in class and have digital flashcards plus a couple of practice questions that were provided but would love to hear if anyone has any suggestions or tips that helped them!

NREMT NREMT stress

Hi all, I'm new to reddit and very new to EMS so bear with me. I recently got into EMS and joined my fire station about a year and 5 months ago. I was put into an EMT class with the best instructor in the state (highest pass rate in the state). Passed the class with a good grade, I believe a 90%. I procrastinated on taking the test because the testing site closest to me was blocked out almost every day until now. I have my test tomorrow at 9 AM and have been studying my butt off. I've been using pocket prep because that's what I can afford at the moment and been averaging 80s-90s. Any tips on staying level headed for the test and the night before? I feel like I'm going to have an aneurism. Thank you, sincerely, Baby EMT

EDIT: literally just finished and I got all 120 questions, a lot of them were pretty hard towards the end

Edit #2: less than 2 hours later and I failed. I got a 911. I cant even remember which questions I kept getting.

Career Advice Petty offense during hiring process

I’m in the process of getting my first EMT job. During the application process I said I had no criminal history because I didn’t at the time, however I got an open container violation last weekend which is a petty offense in my town. I just got an offer letter, and they are now going to run a background check. Should I be proactive and call them to disclose or wait for the background check? Do they catch petty offenses?
