is this game supposed to be this hard

hey guys, somewhat of a casual gamer here and I never played a jrpg before, but this one really interested me in its first couple minutes, I'm playing ni no Kuni wrath of the white witch on switch on normal mode and I think I just didn't get the combat? I'm like dying so much in the first sequence at the deep forest for like the first ever enemies in the game, I've played turned based rpgs before but only basic ones like pokemon and such, am I supposed to be doing something different, I think I really didn't get the combat tutorials and YouTube videos didn't help either, is this just hard I really don't wanna switch to easy mode but I might just because it's kinda frustrating me

Have you gotten the familiar yet? If it helps, Oliver himself is not particularly built for the front lines. He’s better at staying out of the fray and chucking spells at things.

Switch to easy until you get the hang of it then go back to normal
