This game has some pretty unique battle mechanics as well as strange difficulty plateaus. I had a super hard time with this game in the beginning. The first thing you should do is switch to easy mode - you can change back to normal once you get the hang of it. Then, you really need to literally run in circles and try to catch the green and blue "glims" that Drippy throws in battle. When you're near towns and save points, make sure you heal as often as possible. Bank your money by buying healing items so when you continue you aren't losing much if any money.
After a while, you will get the hang of the combat, you'll gain some party members and some familiars (very much like pokemon). It really is a fun game, but it can be super frustrating until you learn the battle mechanics well.

Play on Easy! You don't have to feel remorse for doing that 😅 Especially the beginning can be very hard. Plus you said you're a casual gamer and have not played an jrpg before. So do yourself a favor and play on Easy. They basically worded it wrong, it should be 'Casual' or 'Normal' instead of 'Easy', since they made this game quite hard.

I've managed to play on normal up until the way to the desert but the beasties there were too strong to my skills, I've switched to easy and it's not unbalanced as I thought it would be, I'm having a pleasant experience, thank you for helping me

Defense, both physical and magic, matter a lot. As such some familiars will die in basically just a couple hits. In turn attack matters a lot since if it's not high enough you'll do 1 damage to tough familiars. Early game, besides the starting monsters, the big banana guys and the tombstone are very good and will make the game more manageable. They are accessible once you get to the second area.

The start of the game is pretty rough but it gets much easier. Early on, play defensively. Run around if you need to heal and use both items and magic.
Even after the Forest, the trip to the second city can be brutal. Avoid enemies when you’re trying to get to the next checkpoint or whatever and only grind exp when you’re near a save point.
It’s sucks there’s no auto-save either so you can definitely lose progress if you aren’t careful. Save often.
Once you get through the second city, the game starts to get much easier because of all your familiars. If you use the right ones, the rest of the combat becomes pretty trivial tbh.
