Best pastrami sandwich

I'm a big torta, banh mi, etc kind of guy.

However, sometimes you just want an old fashioned pastrami sandwich.

So who has the best meat and best overall pastrami sandwich?

Bonus points for your specific order (on rye, type of cheese, produce choices, etc.).

I absolutely loved this brand of red currant sour candy but they were discontinued a few years ago. Anyone have suggestions for something similar? TIA:)

Forge Rockridge

I want this place to succeed and a place I want to go more often. But so far, needs some attention to detail.

I love the multi-tap beer/cider selection and they have cocktails. But the servers know little about beer, the Forge beer from Line 51 is listed as a CA Common and it definitely isn't. And $10 beers are still a turnoff, even though I know, everything is going up.

Haven't had the pizza yet, but the one at the next table seemed underbaked--crust pretty pale and quite "soggy".

The gnocchi had great sauce (corn, ricotta and garlic), but the gnocchi themselves were dense and heavy.

My fish and chips had way too much salt/pepper, and the batter is weird--looks good, but not crispy at all.

Burger seems quite good, although high at $23

Fries were great. frito misto is great.

I'll keep going back for a while and send in my notes to see if anyone is listening. Although no contact information online for them.

Berkeley Bowl vs Farmer Joe's

Grocery store death match.

You can only choose one and never enter the other for the rest of your life.

What's your choice and why? Berkeley Bowl or Farmer Joe's?

Really enjoyed our meal there tonight, the dushbara (Azerbaijani dumpling soup) is something I’ll crave on a cold winter night.

Everything else was very good as well (including the pictured lamb shank, spritz and salad)! Posting because I hope they get some much deserved love. I will be back.

Besides Prescott Market for pre-gaming, what kind of food/drink options are inside the park? Prices?

As far as Prescott goes, as much as I’ve been meaning to try Fast Times, I had a burger for lunch and steak for dinner last night, so kinda beefed out right now 🥴. What else is good on the food & drink tip? Almanac for beers, what about cocktails/shots?

Favorite butcher(s)?

Hello, hive mind!

I'd like to make beef tartare sometime in the next week or so. I'm hesitant to visit a supermarket (though I'd bet Whole Foods is plenty reputable), so I'm curious if there are any specialty butcher shops I might want to look into in the Oakland area. Or, if you've had good experiences with raw tenderloin from supermarket butchers, let me know the good ones!

Thanks in advance!

Homemade Tortillas

I'd love to purchase some home made tortillas - corn and or flour. I enjoy making them myself but it's a bit too much work sometimes. Any idea where I can purchase them?

Favorite ethnic grocery stores

We're fortunate to have places like Farmer Joe's and Berkeley Bowl.

However, sometimes you need ingredients that are better purchased at ethnic grocery stores.

KP Asian Market is great for Korean/Asian Food. El Rancho Supermercado (Castro Valley) is my go to Mexican grocery store.

So what are some are some of your hidden (or not so hidden) places to purchase ethnic groceries? Oakland and surrounding cities are totally fine.

Bonus points for your favorite purchases in these grocery stores.

Sun Moon Studio reservations

Hello,

I'm looking to see if anyone has a reservation for 2 at Sun Moon Studio from Aug 28 through Sept 3 that they would be willing to sell to me? I've tried getting a reservation several times this summer but nothing ever seems to be available. If you have one please dm me!

Thanks!

African lunch buffets?

Does anyone know of any good African buffets and their cost? Doesn't have to be strictly in Oakland, but in the vicinity (Emeryville, Berkeley etc). Thanks in advance.

Where taco stands get their meat from?

I was getting tacos from someone with a taco stand - they had three standard options: carnitas, chicken, and carne asada. As they were preparing my food, I asked - out of curiosity and just to make small talk - if he cooked the meat. He said yes. I asked him how he prepared it (like spices, how long it cooks, etc.). He said that he gets the meat from a butcher that prepares and cooks it. Meaning, he essentially just heats up the meat.

I wondered if maybe a bunch of small taco stands do something similar, like there are a couple big suppliers that the taco stands buy from?

Fruitvale / any other midweek Farmers Markets

Usually go to Saturday at Grand-Lake or Sunday in West Oakland. Unfortunately I had to miss both this weekend. Stone fruit has been on my mind and I need the usual rotation of veggies, too. How does Tuesday at Fruitvale compare to the weekend markets? Are there any other midweek farmers markets you have shopped? I looked online a few times but that is the only one I saw outside of Fri / Sa / Sun..

Thank in advance!

Where to get container of pico de gallo

I’m not a huge Whole Foods person, but they used to have great fresh/in-house pico de gallo. At some point in the last year they switched to some mass produced, flavorless mid from Taylor Farms. So where can I go to grab a half pint of flavorful, fresh, juicy pico? Bonus if they offer a mild and spicy version (although I’m happy to throw some peppers in it myself to spice it up).
