Hi everyone! Do you have any experience with ikea oil pastel? What do you think? To me it feels very hard to blend colors with this brand.

Sgrafitto art help

Post image
10 Upvotes

Hi everybody,

I'm a year 3 teacher (7-8year olds) and I'm working on doing a cultural art project on Ming vases. I've experimented a bit using oil pastels and my plan is to use white acrylic paint (or do I need gesso paint?) on top. Afterwards we will use the sgraffito technique to etch our designs on top.

My question is, would it be easier to etch using watercolour paper as a base or normal paper? Also is it necessary to use gesso paint? Rather than acrylic paint?

Thanks in advance!

I wanted to make this art piece for a friend of mine for their birthday, since they are a huge LOTR fan. I feel like I have shat on it. First is the reference image and the second one is what I drew. I chose oil pastels (might have been the wrong choice). I am not able to put a finger on it but mine is not even close to the reference. PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I CAN DO TO IMPROVE IT. Thank you so much!

oh look at the ambience this artwork evokes. look at how static yet blazingly colorful it is. look at how the lines of blue represents the linear passing of time disguised as a drawing of a sky. the seesaw is looking desolate, unable to hold up even a child's gaze. the sidewalk is not something people walk on, not even to gravitate towards. it's there as a piece of concrete, a reminder of how industrialized we've all become. oh, what a world. oh, what a colorful concrete world.

I'm trying to make this super compilation of records to learn how to create light and shadow and work with different colors. But I didn't know it would be so much work and now I'm tired and can't finish it.

Recently I bought a few SENNELIR oil pastels and oil sticks. I like how expressive they are and (in a nice way) you need to be non perfectionist! But one of my problems is that it seems they never dry. Although I love their softness, should I try a different brand? Any experience?
