Discussion Chloé Zhao has a new movie coming out this year!! Hamnet!!!
Hamnet is about William Shakespeare and his wife Agnes after their son Hamnet has died. Its a fictional telling of the couple's lives.
The cast will include Oscar Nominees Jessie Buckley (The Lost Daughter), Paul Mescal (Aftersun), and Emily Watson (Breaking the Waves, Hilary and Jackie). Joe Alwyn (The Favourite, The Brutalist) will also star.
The film is directed by Oscar Winner Chloé Zhao, who won Beat Picture and Best Director for Nomadland. Produced by Sam Mendes and Steven Spielberg as well!!!!!
Do you think Chloé Zhao will repeat herself and become the first woman to win Best Director twice?

What if Shawshank Redemption beat Forrest Gump for Best Picture?
There's no denying Forrest Gump is a masterpiece and maybe even Tom Hanks' best film, but considering it was running against Shawshank Redemption, which is also one of the greatest films ever made, I'm wondering what if Shawshank won the Best Picture award over Forrest Gump, since it won the most awards that year while Shawshank unfortunately won nothing

Discussion Do you think Jay Kelly has a good chance at some Oscars?
I forgot about Noah Baumbach's new movie Jay Kelly. The movie has a huge cast including George Clooney and Adam Sandler as the two leads!!! Its about the friendship of a famous actor and his manager and reflecting on their lives. The choices and relationships they made over the years.
Do you think Jay Kelly could get some nominations? I wouldn't be suprised for Best Picture, Best Actor for Clooney and Best Original Screenplay for Noah Baumbach and Emily Mortimer. A big suprise would be if Adam Sandler got nominated for Best Supporting Actor!!!! Sandler has proven himself with films like Uncut Gems, Punch Drunk Love and Hustle!!! I hope he gets his first nomination!!!

What if Best Animated Feature always had five slots?
I've been wondering about the movies that could potentially have gotten an Oscar nomination if the Animated Feature category had been expanded in their respective years, so I decided to make a post speculating on what the Academy may have picked, judging by their usual taste. I'm going by the list of submissions to the category, which also lists the nominees if you want a refresher.
2001
One obvious answer would be Atlantis: The Lost Empire, but that film wasn't submitted. According to the cited article on the Wikipedia page, Disney didn't want any possible vote splitting to harm Monsters, Inc.'s chances to win. Waking Life would probably be safe, since it's the only one to have particularly good reviews and receive actual attention in the States. None of the other options make a lot of sense to me, but I'm going with Osmosis Jones, since it didn't get terrible reviews, seems more accessible than something like Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within and wouldn't be completely obscure to the voting body, even if it was a bomb.
2003
Tokyo Godfathers seems like something the Academy would have been open to, even if non-Ghibli anime representation has only happened once. Otherwise, I'm guessing Piglet's Big Movie, since it seems to have had at least above average reception. Maybe Looney Tunes: Back in Action but I'm more confident in the other two. I think we can rule out the TV show movies as well. Also, according to this article from the time, The Animatrix wasn't eligible and Sinbad wasn't submitted because... why? DreamWorks didn't even have another contender that year, so it makes no sense.
2004
This is kind of hard. Even if the voting body seemed to have a thing against motion capture movies, I think The Polar Express could have managed a spot, at least considering it was successful enough to score three noms otherwise. I know a lot of people would have liked to see The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie get nominated but I think the anti-show tie-in bias would prevent it. I feel similarly about the Teacher's Pet movie which got weirdly solid reviews. My other pick would be Home on the Range, which some might find absurd but it did get around the same reception as the nominated Shark Tale and the previous year's Brother Bear, and at a time when the Disney name seems to have helped.
2005
Pretty straightforward in my eyes, Madagascar and Robots were both successful original movies from studios that had done well at the Oscars before. I don't see any of the other movies having a better chance.
2006
Somewhat solid year, I can see several contenders. For one, I'm going with Flushed Away, since it's Aardman and got pretty good reviews. Otherwise, I'm not sure. Maybe Paprika or A Scanner Darkly would be too weird for the Academy to get in over the more standard family fare. I guess I'll just go with Over the Hedge.
2007
Meet the Robinsons makes a lot of sense to me, even if it wasn't super successful. Besides that, Bee Movie feels the most likely to me. Not super well-received, but original and successful and not based on a TV show or a disappointing sequel.
2008
Another pretty straightforward year to me, Waltz with Bashir was very well-received and got an International Feature nomination, and I don't think being too adult would have been a problem in a year like this. Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa is the only other option that really makes sense to me out of the options.
2010
Tangled not being nominated is already somewhat surprising, although the existing lineup makes sense considering there were only three slots. I can see a case for Megamind, but I think it's Despicable Me.
Considering the options, it's not surprising the lineup was largely limited to three to begin with, but I think it's interesting to imagine what movies were potentially in the top five.

Are we getting overlooked with this movie for Oscars 2026 or not?
I have a feeling that this will be the year's Conclave. No one predict it will get into the Best Picture until it came in theaters.

The first independent films nominated for an Oscar was in 1937
Something to sing about was nominated for best score, and the girl said no was nominated for best sound, and they were both made by Grand National Pictures
Does anyone know who owns the rights to the films made by them? Or are they in the public domain? Cuz there’s some dvd releases of STSA by different companies, which usually means it’s in the PD

Best and worst line-ups for Best Special Effects?
Inspired by The Awards Contender's videos and the best and worst line-ups, I wanted to ask what are your favorite/least favorite line-ups for Best VFX.
NOTE: DO NOT ANSWER BASED ON THE QUALITY OF FILMS AS A WHOLE, JUST THEM BEING NOMINEES FOR BEST SPECIAL EFFECTS.
For instance, I don't care for a lot of the 2012 nominees as movies on their own. However in terms of recongizing their special effects, I have no problem. They're all impressive effects and I'd have a hard time replacing one of them.
For the worst line-up, 2018 has to be one of the most baffling. Infinity War I'm fine being there - yes there is a lot of green screen and CGI and some of it doens't always look great, but the motion-capture on Thanos has always been really seemless. And First Man is a pretty interesting choice for winner. But the other nominees, ugh.
I understand Star Wars is an institution in and of itself for awards bodies but nothing about Solo looks impressive compared to Force Awakens, Rogue One, or Last Jedi. Christopher Robin is an odd choice - even putting aside there's a better movie about adults talking to a CGI bear that got more acclaim that year, and Ready Player One is not only one of Spielberg's worst movies this century, it's one of the worst nominees period. The CGI designs for the avatars look dated and unappealing, the textures feel paperthin, and even just going by visuals, it's an ugly, colorless film to watch.
And there were perfectly great candidates to replace them right there with Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Paddington 2, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, Aquaman (which may look fake, at least had a lot of creativity in the designs), and Annihilation, which I think actually should've won the award that year.
As for the best, I wanna shotout 2009. Obviously Avatar is a game-changer and even though the effects in Way of Water are better, I did rewatch Avatar a few weeks ago and it's still holds up visually. But District 9 is a good example of good effects on a small budget (though it helps this was done by Weta Digital) and Star Trek is also a good update on the look for the series for a new audience and with effects and production that are still impressive 15 years later.
My only criticism is that they capped the nominee list at 3. While the shortlist had Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and 2012, I think to make it 5 they could've nominated Watchmen and Sherlock Holmes.
