I'm going camping here for labor day weekend, would like to know if anyone has fished it recently and has any pointers? It's in Bancroft area, known for bass fishing and lake trout

I caught 19 bass of assorted sizes on the Rideau River today near Burrits Rapids. Also two decent walleye and a nice pike. This was biggest of the lot. Tight lines everyone!

Trout fishing within an hour?

Hi! I'm from Northern Ontario where great trout fishing is around every corner, but I haven't heard of much of that around here? Are there any rivers or creeks within 100km of Ottawa that y'all would recommend I check out?

Fishing spot recommendations

Hello :) I’m new to fishing and want to plan a day out with my friend. I’ve been to Rideau River Provincial Park but it was underwhelming. I’d like a place with nice scenery and where we’d have some luck fishing. From my own research, my top contenders are Shirley Park and Petrie Island.

Would love some recommendations, advice, and tips for fishing during this time of the year. Thanks ☺️

Fly-Fishing Gear Appraisal?

A woman from Mansfield, Quebec, reached out to me (I’m the editor of MidCurrent.com) about a collection of fly-fishing and tying gear left by her recently deceased partner. She’s trying to figure out what it’s worth.

I see there are no real fly shops in the area. Any suggestions of whom she could get to look at everything?

Thanks

Just before 6AM, surface water temp was already 76F but first cast sealed the deal :) This spot never fails if you remember the right conditions to be there!

Anyone have any muskie fishing tips?

I have been on the hunt for a muskie for a few years now. Unfortunately I have yet to catch one. I have seen them swim by but they have never seemed overly interested lol. I know they are called the fish of 10,000 casts but I am starting to feel well overdue 😂

Advices for a newbie?

Hey, I’ll be moving to Ottawa soon, and I’d love to start fishing as a hobby. I’ve fished a couple of times in Finland, but always with a friend guiding me, so I never had to worry about anything—just casting the line and reeling it in.

I’m looking for advice on how to get started:

  • What do I need before I can start fishing? (Fishing license, maybe?)
  • Where can I buy the gear I’ll need?
  • What’s a good starting budget?

Also, if anyone is interested in having a fishing buddy and hopefully teaching me a few tricks, I’d really appreciate it!

Trolling recommendations for Shallow Water

Hello! This year I've started trolling using a Scotty mount on my kayak. I've been somewhat successful pulling a Heddon Torpedo (a small topwater prop lure) along as I go from place to place. I like them because they don't fall too deep or get snagged on the bottom when I take breaks like I would if trolling a spoon. I've bought jerk/crank baits before cuz I see those are commonly used but I guess the lips are too big for the area I'm planning to try this weekend, Shirley's Bay. From my understanding and research the place as some nice weeds for smallmouth and Pike but is really shallow (1-3 feet for a lot of the areas) and rocky. Does anyone have any experience fishing this area from a small craft?

In the past I've hooked fish but lost them on the retrieve with the torpedo, you can't really change out the hooks and they're quite small. Does anyone have any tips for trolling in a kayak or lure recommendations. I would very much appreciate it. I would love to catch a pike, since it's been awhile since I've held a slippery slime rocket.

Thanks for reading! 🙏

Flathead catfish in Nations river

A month ago I was fishing with some buddys in the nations river when we saw these fish chilling by some weeds in pretty shallow water (like only a couple feet deep). At first I thought they were channel catfish but I couldn’t get a good look at them since the water was really murky, although a couple times their lower body would surface and strangely enough they were yellow with black splotches? Their tails were also not a V fork which also puzzled me. I never saw their upper bodies but they were big I’d say anywhere from 20-25” and maybe 5lbs cuz they were chunky. As well they also went after my top water a couple times. I was never able to catch them. Even though they’re not native the only fish I could think of to fit that description it a flathead. If anyone has any idea of what I might’ve seen that would be great.
