Wait. There’s a controversy surrounding puddles in Spider-Man? Glad this news missed me

152

u/NOBLExGAMER Sep 02 '18

This what people are up in arms about. There is a very obvious difference between the two photos regardless of the puddles.

This image also came out showing there was less detail in some animations than previously showed, again there is a pretty obvious difference between the two.

Insomniac and it's employees have stated there was no downgrade and that it was just a lighting change and a removal of a puddle.

Here's a screenshot of the game in it's current state, it perfectly showcases the difference lighting can make. There wasn't a downgrade. People are just cherry picking for examples with low light scenes.

Walks into dark room

"Man the graphics suck in here"

10

u/curious_dead Sep 02 '18

Reminds me of when Dark Souls 2 (maybe 3?) came out, some people playing with super high gamma took vids of an admittedly blander place and claimed graphics were horrible.

3

u/Liquid_Tacitus Sep 02 '18

That was Dark Souls Remastered. Dark Souls 2 had it's own controversy where pitch black areas designed to be navigated with the aid of a torch were completely removed by release.

-3

u/NOBLExGAMER Sep 02 '18

Pretty sure that's from a cutscene.

3

u/jasmeek2001 Sep 02 '18

Pretty sure both your examples are cutscenes as well...

0

u/NOBLExGAMER Sep 02 '18

Both of the images I've linked are actual gameplay stills.

4

u/jasmeek2001 Sep 02 '18

The second one is from a quick transitional cutscene

0

u/NOBLExGAMER Sep 02 '18

Yes but it's rendered in game.

3

u/Crybaby_Uchiha Sep 03 '18

That’s not how that works at all.

-2

u/metamorphomisk Sep 03 '18

Then how you explain this? /img/1mck85goq7j11.jpg

20

u/finalgear14 Sep 02 '18

People are trying to boil the difference down to dynamic puddles or a lack of real time reflections, all the while ignoring the fucking generational difference in lighting quality between e3 and release. I saw a joke post on the general gaming sub of those two pictures with the top being rtx on and the bottom being off. And yeah, pretty much. Their e3 footage looks like it uses Ray tracing when compared to release.

1

u/AL2009man al2009man Sep 02 '18

There shouldn't be Ray Traces in the 2017 demo build.

If it was, then Insomniac would've bragged about it and we've would've seen more games using Ray Tracing.

u/alsomdude2 Sep 02 '18

The game looks fucking great my god you people are annoying and no wonder game devs hate the community.

82

u/DiamondPup Sep 02 '18 edited Sep 02 '18

The game looks fantastic. But pretending there's no difference is just stupid.

The whole problem here isn't the downgrade, the problem is the community manager started replying to trolls saying there was no difference.

-22

u/CollinHoffman21 Sep 02 '18

Almost like E3 trailers are meant to sell the game and are run on PC's at the time.........

16

u/DiamondPup Sep 02 '18

Sure. But then say as much or don't say anything. Why lie about something so obvious?

-7

u/CollinHoffman21 Sep 02 '18

I agree its shitty. But companys have been doing this for years. We should know this by now and not get caught up in the hype.

10

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '18

When was the first time you learned about this?

Now take a second and realize that with each passing E3, there is a new generation of people learning this as they get into gaming.

Just because you know algebra doesn't mean everyone does.

I tend to disagree, the new shots look so desaturated and bland that it looks very messy and basic.

I also agree, I usually never buy single player games first year. I'll wait for the barging bin complete edition.

I don't do Nintendo but they don't give eyou a choice unless it's a used copy so might as well.

29

u/Cressio Sep 02 '18

I have no horses in this race but that is a drastic downgrade. Like beyond night and day. Why is there such a backlash against people being upset the one time they’re actually right lmao

27

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '18

Why? Because fanboys and this culture that thinks devs never lie. Just like when Bungie swore they didn't cut content for Destiny DLC and Kotaku found out it was a lie.

The anti-concern people must be from that RetardEra forum.

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '18

[deleted]

9

u/Cressio Sep 02 '18

First of all, it is. Second of all, why you so mad? Lol. It’s not a big deal

9

u/loluz loluz_9619 Sep 02 '18

Fanboys gotta fanboy

2

u/Gaarando Sep 02 '18

Because it's not a drastic downgrade the way you're claiming. He's pointing out that the Division was a drastic downgrade, which is true. You're simply using it wrong.

And I'm not even gonna buy Spider-Man 'cause the gameplay didn't look that fun. Seemed you do a lot of the same moves. Which is fine, but not my thing.

People have shown other footage where the game still looks pretty much the same. Lighting does a lot to help graphics. A lot of people in this thread are making up stuff from a couple of screenshots only. Instead of actually showing the same places with similar lighting.

No doubt in my mind that when people start making actual comparison videos that it's gonna look pretty much the same.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '18

The game no longer has reflective surfaces.

That’s a pretty big deal in a superhero game where you will be swinging from building to building

1

u/Gaarando Sep 02 '18

Says who? Show me.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 02 '18

That’s what the controversy is about...

1

u/PraiseTheSun1997 Sep 02 '18

It has nothing to do with reflective surfaces. It still has those.

How DARE people be upset that a VIDEO GAME looks different than when it was showcased! Especially after the likes of companies like ubisoft, who are notorious for this kind of behavior.

Jokes aside, the so called "hate" for it is well overestablished. People are not as "up in arms" as some are making it out to be. However, there is very obvious downgrades to the visual fidelity of what they've shown. Sure, it's not Ubisoft levels of fuckery, but it IS there.

1

u/alsomdude2 Sep 02 '18

But the game looks incredible still if anything spider man looking all glossy looks shittier.

1

u/yomamaisonfier yomamaisonfier Sep 02 '18

Irrelevant. Watch Dogs 1 at E3 and Watch Dogs 1 at launch, both on their own, look "incredible" for the time. However seeing as they're both supposed to be the same game, it's ridiculous how much it's different. No one is saying the game DOESN'T look good. People are simply saying it looks downgraded, even if ever so slightly. And there's nothing wrong with making sure companies give what is promised at launch. This is something we've been lacking the past few years.

0

u/alsomdude2 Sep 02 '18

No one is talking about that shit game why bring it up? They aren't even made by the same dev sorry but insomniac makes great games and they've never done anything like EA or ubisoft plus it's a playstation exclusive I think anyone bitching about this dumb shit doesn't have a ps4 and is just butthurt because they cant play it.

2

u/yomamaisonfier yomamaisonfier Sep 02 '18

You are incredibly ignorant and are the reason console users get such flak. Jesus christ.

-3

u/notrealmate rowblot Sep 02 '18

Then vote with your wallet and don’t buy it.

7

u/yomamaisonfier yomamaisonfier Sep 02 '18

If I could facepalm harder....

People really don't understand the point being made...

5

u/georgenooryblows Sep 02 '18

THEN JUST DON'T BUY IT DUMMY!!!

Seriously though, why can't we acknowledge there is graphical difference and have a discussion about it? Most of the outrage I'm seeing is directed towards people just trying to talk about it.

5

u/yomamaisonfier yomamaisonfier Sep 02 '18

Exactly. The post I saw about it was just people talking about the differences (which is very clearly more than just some puddles disappearing, but that was the easiest thing to notice). Suddenly it's "OMG PEOPLE ARE FURIOUS ABOUT LESS PUDDLES" And the reaction to that is "don't buy it"? What the actual hell lol

0

u/Gaarando Sep 02 '18

Because there is no proper proof there is a graphical difference as other people have showed differences to where current actually looks better graphically.

Instead of going off of a couple screenshots with different lighting maybe wait for a proper comparison between E3 footage and new. Going off of screenshots with lighting differences is not smart.

1

u/cannablubber Sep 02 '18

Damn none of the replies to you agree but I just want you to know I think it’s annoying too.

-8

u/NOBLExGAMER Sep 02 '18

I'm sorry you're right, it was rude of me to use my eyes notice a difference between what Insomniac showed us and what they gave us and get slightly upset about that. Again excuse my rudeness.

9

u/kraenk12 Sep 02 '18

There are many more scenes which look better than the E3 trailer. I’m sure you’ve seen those as well, right?

16

u/maniek1188 Sep 02 '18

You are more than welcome to provide links confirming what you just wrote.

2

u/ThomasdeB1505 Enter PSN ID Sep 02 '18

Here you go https://youtu.be/BOLVLSIeRI8 It's a moving trailer comparison so that shows how much better it looks while playing AND there can't be any badly timed, misleading screenshots

1

u/maniek1188 Sep 03 '18

Except the thing you linked consists only of pre rendered cutscenes, and has 0 gameplay, do please, keep talking about "misleading".

Maybe this? https://mobile.twitter.com/insomniacgames/status/1033551203655802880 idk it's kinda hard getting any gameplay comparison because reviews aren't to be posted until tomorrow. This shows details https://www.reddit.com/r/SpidermanPS4/comments/9b28yn/an_example_of_how_lighting_and_compression/?st=JLLW158S&sh=1166b426 Here you can also see that half the suit looks different due to lighting This https://www.reddit.com/r/SpidermanPS4/comments/94mq8f/the_classic_suit_is_the_most_beautiful_vibrant/?st=JLLW4MO6&sh=59d1494f Also this https://www.reddit.com/r/SpidermanPS4/comments/9c7rxv/downgrade_my_ass/?st=JLLW7PIK&sh=a32b644e And a confirmation by the developer https://mobile.twitter.com/insomniacgames/status/1031605005311070208?s=21 Oh this too https://inthegame.nl/wp-content/uploads/Spider-Man_PS4_Preview_Swing.jpg There isn't really anymore good recorded content right now but when reviews get out you should see for yourself. And if this doesn't convince you I honestly don't know what will

Everyone needs to watch their language around here. First it is ding dong, then next people are being called knuckleheads and goofballs.

-1

u/NOBLExGAMER Sep 02 '18

I have but from what I've seen those are in cinematics only, for instance the cutscene between Aunt May and Peter at the F.E.A.S.T Shelter.

2

u/kraenk12 Sep 02 '18

That’s not true. It doesn’t matter anyway since all cutscenes are rendered in real-time

C'mon man, it's obvious the two pictures I posted are visually distinct and different from one another.

I don't know why people are getting so defensive about this, I'm not saying the game is going to be bad or calling for Insomniac to be crucified but to deny that there is any difference or blame it on "lighting" or "compression" is ridiculous.

1

u/mugdays Sep 02 '18

How is it possible that developers are still downgrading graphics??? They know we can go back and compare previously-shown footage with what the released game looks like, right?

1

u/IIM_Clutch Sep 02 '18

I haven't followed this controversy at all. But I ain't gonna hold you, that is a pretty obvious difference.

-2

u/NOBLExGAMER Sep 02 '18 edited Sep 02 '18

I'm sure the game will play the same and be just as fun but it's definitely disheartening to see such a noticeable change.

No downgrade just a lighting change that made everything look a bit worse...in other words....a downgrade

-8

u/thikthird Sep 02 '18

I hate people who this is an issue for.

0

u/The_BadJuju Knight_Darman03 9 Sep 02 '18

The second link is a shitty compressed screenshot, not a downgrade.
