Virtue ethics, consequentialism, and deontology walk into a trolley problem...

This sub is making me think that philosophy makes people dumber

It's as I've always said philosophy is smart philosophers are dumb usually in the way that only smart people can be

Genuine engagement with philosophy makes you smarter, but the internet and social media makes you dumber. And as we can see here, the latter is winning.

I like how 60% of philosophy memes are just misunderstanding philosophy. Can't even be sure it's intentional so it doesn't even work as a joke.

It was intentional, lol. I basically just took (bad) takes from this sub, put them in a blender, and spit it out on a commonly used meme template. 🤣 If your takeaway is, 'No one on this sub reads/understands philosophy' (which in itself has become a meme...) then the post has done its job.

is that fucking anne frank

u/MeanShween 3d ago
I believe it's referencing a thought experiment critiquing Kant where a deontologist would give up jews to the nazis because they have a duty not to lie about the jews hiding under their floorboards. Thus Anne Frank is sad. Deep cut.

When I was younger I would mix her up with Ayn Rand (they kinda look similar, both names start with A)
Im guessing OP is equally as dumb as me

I'm pretty sure it's the "Jews under the floor boards" thought experiment in favor of lying

It's ok, we all have these pairings. I mix up Bill Murray and Tom Hanks.

I’m pretty sure almost nobody on this sub reads philosophy. Every other post is free will or atheism stuff.

A lot of philosophical writings are basically just the equivalent of social media rants.
Like, 99% of what Nietzsche writes is just him bitching about how people don’t choose their own system of values.

u/Many_Froyo6223 She critique on my reason till it's pure 3d ago
I've never seen a mf 'rant' on social media about the transcendental time determinations of the categories that ground experience or the Spinozan concept of transindividuality or object-oriented logic or basically any interesting philosophical topic ever.
"A lot of philosophical writings are basically just the equivalent of social media rants" might be the absolute worst take i've seen on this sub so far and that's huge

Well you're on the wrong type of social media then.

Instructions unclear. I somehow ended up on the organ transplantation committee at a hospital with a lot of people jogging down our street every morning.

Deontologists don't want you to know this but the organs of joggers are free. You can just take as many of them as you need if you don't get caught.

A Consequentialist's 'moral' form of slavery.
So the point here is that the issue with consequentialism is... it's consequences?

Chrysippos of soloi would exclaim his displeasure with the misrepresentation of stoicism by that psychology prof before pushing the lever towards that ones demise, after all people are drenched in hot air emitted from the mangled body of peterson he‘d turn to anne consoling her by whispering „me too“

I cannot decide if the idea of Anne Frank being a philosopher is more funny or impossibly depressing

Jordan Peterson wouldn't protect persecuted jews during the holocaust is all I took from that answer.

I’m flipping a coin between Ayn Rand and the other dude. I’m not exactly a trained judge or the grand arbiter of morality, so I’d just choose randomly and hope for the best.
