Hiring Thread Weekly Hiring Questions and Advice Thread
This thread will run weekly, and it will reset each week on Monday at 1030 UTC. If you have any questions pertaining to law enforcement hiring, ask them here. Feel free to repost any unanswered questions in the next week's thread.
**This is not a thread for updates on your hiring process. We understand applicants get excited about moving forward in the process, but in order to more effectively help users, we're restricting this thread to questions only.** That said, questions related to your progression in the process are still OK.
**Some Resources:**
* [**Our Subreddit Wiki Pages**](https://www.reddit.com/r/ProtectAndServe/wiki/publicindex#wiki_hiring): A good resource which may be able to answer common questions.
* [**Officer Down Memorial Page**](http://www.odmp.org/): ODMP is a great site to read about the men and women of law enforcement who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
* [**911 Job Forums**](http://www.911jobforums.com/forum.php) & [**Officer.com Forums**](http://forums.officer.com/): Both of these sites are great resources for those interested in entering any type of public service career. If you go to either site, make sure you search around the forum and do some reading before posting a new topic.
* **/r/AskLE**: You can ask any law-enforcement-related questions on /r/AskLE if you don't feel like asking them in this thread.
* **/r/TalesFromTheSquadCar**: This is a great subreddit to view and share stories about law enforcement.
* **/r/LegalAdvice**: Feel free to ask for legal advice here at P&S, but /r/LegalAdvice is often times better suited to provide advice regarding the law. Remember, /r/LegalAdvice exists to provide advice and information pertaining to legal matters, *not* to debate why the law is what it is. Also, posting in /r/LegalAdvice should not be a substitute for actual professional legal counsel.

**Suggestions for the Mods:**
If you have a suggestion regarding the Weekly Question Thread, please PM /u/2BlueZebras or /u/fidelis_ad_mortem. Suggestions will not be implemented until the following week's post.
If you have suggestions regarding our subreddit in general, feel free to [message the moderators](http://www.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%2Fr%2FProtectAndServe). We welcome all suggestions!

Fallen Deputy’s son adding his father’s name to the mural.
If you look at the agency’s FB page directly after the deputies funeral this agency posted a hiring ad! It’s crazy to think that you’ll dang near be “replaced” by the time your body gets cold. Guys in LE, hug your families a little tighter please.

Self Post Milwaukeo PD Academy
Hey all, had a quick question that doesnt look like its been asked on any of the police subreddits.
I'm currently geting back in-shaoe to apply for the Milwaukee police department in WI, was hoping if someone could give me some insights on how the academy is ran.
Im prior military, so while I'd be able to deal with a more militarized approach to academy, i would appreciate a more relaxed, hands on and informati e academy, been there done that whole screaming in your face thing. Would appreciate actually being able to focus on the training at hand.
Thank you for any insights y'all have.

Grappler Video
Posting the video of the Grappler from yesterday. I saw a lot of comments complaining about the use of this device, and how it wrecked the car (supposedly stolen). We as law enforcement have limited options when a vehicle flees from us (stolen or otherwise). I get that it sucks for the owners, but as you can see, the fault completely lies with the thief and not police.

Short Police Officer
Heyy, so I’m a 16-year old male standing at 5'6, and I’ve basically stopped growing. I got a bone X-ray, and the doctor said I might reach 5'7, maybe 5'8 if I’m really lucky but realistically I’ll probably end up around 5'7. Ever since 6th grade I’ve wanted to become a police officer, but I’m not sure if my height will be a problem. I’m very outgoing and a good talker, and I’ve been going to the gym to get in shape. I’ve already put on some muscle and plan to keep working on it. To be honest, I’ve never been in a real fight and I wouldn’t call myself a fighter, but I’m not afraid of confrontation if it comes to it. I live in a small town, so there aren’t many combat sports availabland even in nearby bigger towns, the options are pretty limited or kind of sketchy. Soo what do you think about my concerns and what would you reccomend me to do?
[I live in a Czech Republic if this helps you to answer better]
EDIT: No, there are no height requirments or concerns i wont pass physical exam Im talking about things i can face during the duty

Self Post Police officer drowns while rescuing drowning person (Nanjing, Jiangsu Province, China)

Translation:
In 1:20 AM on January 20, 2025, Nanjing police officer(of the Yuhuatai branch's Banqiao police station) Constable 1st Class Xie Yufeng(谢雨丰) was dispatched to a call of a person claiming they were planning to jump into a river and commit suicide. After arriving, officers engaged in crisis negotiation, and by 2:07 AM the situation seemed to be under control with the person attempting suicide seeming to be talked out of it; Just when officers prepared to leave the scene, the individual recieved a phone call, after which he decided to jump into the river. Constable Xie jumped into the river, trying to rescue the individual, with his bodycam recording his last words "抓住我!抓住我!"(hold on to me! Hold on to me!) before he drowned; A police sergeant and 6 firefighters later managed to bring him back to shore, confirming he had died in the line of duty.
In July 11, 2025, the Jiangsu provincial government posthumosly awarded Constable Xie with martyr status(meaning your family gets benefits, you get put on a honor roll, vandalism of your grave/defamtion towards you has a higher penalty).
Constable Xie was born June 2000 and was only 24 at the time of his death. He had joined the police in September 2022, where he was initially assigned to Nanjing SWAT's "Dragon tiger commando unit", the elite police tactical unit of the Nanjing police and was later reassigned to the Yuhuatai branch's Banqiao police station.

Skep sez: Yes, I know.. just bear with Tips to find hidden surveillance in a residential home? (homebrew tscm)
Anyone know of any economical and reliable wys to find hidden devices taking video and audio?
Quick search online shows need expensive gadgets ($10k+ - non linear junction for example) to reliably find such things.
I'm not looking for advice on how to proceed with my situation at home. And please refrain from calling it paranoia. I am sufficiently convinced something(s) is recording video AND audio including in the bedroom and batroom. Again, I am not looking for legal advice.
Any tips? Nothing looks out of place. I imagine the walls are being used. But I couldn't find anything with a cheap $40 I got online.

Border patrol agents along with K9 "Coffee"(咖啡) of the National Immigration Administration's Xishuangbanna Border Managment Detachment(西双版纳边境管理支队) Menglong Border Police Station(勐龙边境派出所) intercept drugs being smuggled across the China-Myanmar border, September 11, 2022
(Context down below; )
Translation of video and what's going on
0:04-0:07 - In September 11, 2022, the Menglong Border police Station recieved intel of drug traffickers preparing for an exchange in mountainous areas near the china-myanmar border; They were dispatched to seize the drugs involved in the exchange
0:08-0:16 - After searching for over 2 hours, due to the large area needed to search for the drugs and also with the sky gradually getting dark, the border patrol agents decided to deploy K9 "Coffee"(咖啡) to search for the drugs
0:17-0:24 - after 1 hour K9 Coffee finds the first bag of drugs
0:25-0:30 - Border patrol agents find the second bag of drugs
0:31-0:35 - 35 bricks of Methamphetamine are seized in the bags, weighing a total of 23 KG
0:36-0:45 - K9 Coffee is given his or her(idk how to seperate male or female dogs) favorite sausages
Context
The National Immigration Administration in China is similar to USBP+ICE ERO + C&BP Office of field operations; these officers are from the xishaungbanna border managment detachment, which is in charge of border patrol in Xishuangbanna prefecture, yunnan province. The menglong border police station(of the NIA) is in Menglong town, which is on the China-myanmar border. In myanmar, there are many large drug cartel groups that have also trafficked drugs to China; Many NIA(along with it's pre 2018 predecessor, the People's Armed Police Border Defense Corps) units in yunnan often engage in shootouts with drug traffickers from myanmar/laos.

Self Post Why do West Coast uniforms (like CA) look more “fitted” than East Coast (like NYPD)?
I’m curious on the take here. I’ve noticed West Coast (especially CA) uniforms often look more fitted/clean compared to some East Coast agencies where shirts/pants can look looser or bulkier. What actually drive this?

Self Post Question about background and home visit
Applied to a small suburban agency in a nice area and ranked number 1 in my oral board. I come from a very conservative family and I have not told my parents about my relationship with a girl. They are extremely culturally and religiously closed off and they have threatened to cut me off completely if I were to date someone outside our culture. I have disclosed it on my application background packet. Will my background investigator disclose that information when they reach out to my parents?

Self Post Are officers in Hamilton Ontario allowed to accept things like cups of coffee?
I was driving to a tim Hortons to grab some late night snacks, only hit a roadblock due to an accident. I wasn't sure how to get around it so went up to the officer to ask some directions. We got to talking about me joining the department until I finally parted a few minutes later. I felt bad that he was there completely alone in the cold night for however long so I grabbed a small black. He accepted it with a emphatic thank you. But it wasn't until leaving that I wasn't sure if they are even allowed to accept such a thing. It may seem harmless, but I wouldn't be surprised of there was some kind of "it could be poison" or even dumber "its a bribe" type of policies.
