Weekly Discussion 'What have you been playing?' Wednesday - Talk about the games you are playing
Please use this thread to share and discuss which RPGs you have been playing recently (old or new, any platform, AAA or indie). Please don't just list the names of games as your entire post, make sure to elaborate with your thoughts on the games. Writing the names of the games in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names.
Please also make sure to use spoiler tags if you're posting anything about a game's plot that might significantly hurt the experience of others that haven't played the game yet (no matter how old or new the game is).

Discussion RPGs like Valkyrie Profile?
In Valkyrie Profile, you play as Lenneth Valkyrie as you journey their Midgar and collect dying souls of man to perpare for Ragnork. You meet plenty of souls in their most desperate moments, and see a wide array of the human connection in this dark fantasy setting. Very bleak but beautiful stories feels almost like a mini series told in an rpg

What games would you all recommend that are like baldurs gate 3
Obviously divinity 1&2 both being absolutely wonderful games I've also played og fallout, pillars of eternity, disco elysium, underrail a lil bit, and I can't think of what else lol.
I've often thought of trying pathfinder but I've heard it can be a big heavy on the reading. All these games can be. But maybe I'm wrong idk.
I'm excited to hear your recommendations bc I'm going through another rpg kick since I started playing avowed. But I'm rly looking for that isometric rpg Thang.

What makes an RPG character or item a "joke character/item"?
This mostly comes up as a debate in mobile (gacha) games, though it does appear in more standard RPGs.
In the case of mobile games, some players consider the concept of event-exclusive characters such as summer (swimsuit) and Christmas (Santa costume) variants to fall neatly into "joke character" territory, while others say that's not necessarily the case and that some such characters can be considered powerhouses. Same goes with items such as equipment: there are so-called "joke items" either because of appearance or gameplay.
Case in point from experience: Summer Scathach-Skadi from Fate/Grand Order, despite looking out of place in general because she's a swimsuit version of an existing character, is not considered a "joke character". Yet, in the same game, we have Saber Gilles de Rais, a knight who fits well into the game's aesthetics and yet is considered an absolute joke by most players.

Discussion Best Nintendo DS or PlayStation Portable RPGs?
I’ve really been enjoying digging back into the libraries of the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable. I’d have to say that The World Ends With You and Trails in the Sky are the best in class for respective system.
What other games would folks consider top 5 on each system?
I’ve started SMT: Devil Survivor and nearing the end of Final Fantasy Tactics: WOTL, both fantastic in their own right, but what else should I add to my backlog?

Questions for RPG players, what do you believe would be a fair price for an indie title?
For context I myself am a solo indie developer. I've been at this one project now for about 3-4 years, however upon wrapping up production I've been asking "How much should I sell this for?" As I don't want to sell it too cheap and be buried under the shovel ware. I'm also self aware to know that people don't want to just throw 30-50 dollars to a dev they never heard of. Personally I believe 5.99 is the sweet spot as I gets me just out of the shovel ware section but also doesn't make it a massive gamble to the consumers. But I would like to hear what you, the RPG gamers think about it.

Discussion Need CO OP player - Conan Exiles
I am looking out for a CO OP player who can join me in playing Conan Exiles Online and help me out in obtaining The Tower of the Elephant Trophy. Both players can earn trophies simultaneously turn by turn. So if you are also looking to have that trophy checked Let me know.

Helping a friend find a game
Fantasy isometric RPG
Late 1990s to early 2000s (before 2010)
Pixel-based 2D sprite graphics, slightly worse than Diablo II (2000) but better than Diablo I (1996), similar to Shadowflare and The Fate in quality
Real-time, click-to-attack combat, no pause/play or turn-based features
Dark tone, not high fantasy or gothic, more grounded
Starts in an open snowy forest with snow-covered trees and ground, beginning in the top-left corner of the map
First enemies are generic gray or brown wolves
Single male protagonist, sword-focused combat at the start
Reach a village or settlement after fighting wolves in the initial snowy area
Played on PC, uncertain if available on other platforms
Static environment (snow-covered trees and ground do not move), with only the character, wolves, and falling snow (white pixels moving diagonally) animated
Likely Western-developed, possibly from the Slavic sphere (e.g., Russian, Ukrainian)
Ruled out games: Diablo, Diablo II, Icewind Dale, Nox, Darkstone, Divine Divinity, Arcanum, Revenant, Throne of Darkness, Blade & Sword, Exile III, Dungeon Siege, Sacred, Dungeon Lords, Silverfall, Lamentation: Sword of Sorrow, The Fate, Shadowflare, Kult: Heretic Kingdoms, Konung: Legends of the North, Konung 2: Blood of Titans, Evil Islands: Curse of the Lost Soul, Siege of Avalon, Blades of Exile, Blade of Darkness, The Last Express, Sanitarium, Outcast, Restricted Area

Discussion What would you like to see as a single player gamer?
I feel as though over the years, more and more companies are heading towards online multiplayer games. I would like to know from other couch co-op or single player gamers. What would you like to see put into your style of games? Perhaps more content, or even something as simple as more installments to your favorite series. Personally I'm a big fan of Star wars knights of the old republic 2 sith lords.

Question If you could choose a Mangaka to do character designs for a Turn-Based RPG of your own, who would you choose?
My choice would be Oda from One Piece but there's way too many awesome mangaka right now that would totally fit and I think its a shame we dont see many doing it now at the moment.
You could also think of one for any kinda RPG doesn't have to be a Turn-based one tbh, it was just the first one that i thought of

Recommendation request Can someone who plays a lot of CRPGs recommend me how to start?
Can you recommend me 3 CRPG games to introduce myself to this genre without being overwhelmed (so beginner friendly)? The problem, being a beginner, starts when the mechanics become super complex and confusing so I wanted to have a entry point in the genre to start getting used to that type of games. Thanks in advance.

Discussion What's an RPG that you'd recommend to someone who hasn't played any game in the genre before?
I've been thinking about how overwhelming RPGs can be to someone who hasn't tried any game in the genre before. Think large maps, choice-driven dialogue, side quests, large maps, and so on. For someone who hasn't played an RPG before, all of these elements can be a lot to take in.
So I'm curious, if you have a friend who told you they haven't played any RPG before and want to try at least one, what is that game and why?
Mine would be Skyrim since it's the RPG that opened the world of RPGs to me when I played it for the first time many years ago.

Grimrock 2 - Lost City mod is a banger - any other grid based dungeon crawlers?
Played Eye of the Beholder, Dungeon Master, Black Crypt, Bards Tale(s), Ultima IV & V and the old SSI Gold Box games on Commodore and Amiga...
Grimrock 2 made good on the promise of the genre.
By the end I amazingly didn't want 3 because I'd done just about everything you could want to in that engine. Eeeeverything.
A year after finishing I dip back into the mod Lost City and find something as big as the original game AND it has sequels. Difficulty spikes exist and need you to come back later but that settles down apparently.
Otherwise it is Grimrock 3
Wonderful. Playing through with my disabled brother watching just like we did with 2!
Anyone found a game worth experiencing in the genre after Grimrock 2?
Black Crypt has banging intro music and skimming through a Let's Play was gorgeous.
Cryptmaster is a grid based crawler where you type riddles while a sassy skeleton mocks you - hilarious and worth checking out but it zagged hard into its own genre :)
Fiddling the classes and maybe more if that Elden Ring emergent lore feel but I dunno none of that needs to be THIS genre. Darkest Dungeon nails party building.
I've seen Vaporum suggested...any others? The new Wizardry looks too old school for my taste.

Trying to find name of game
Semi-popular/known turn-based RPG game, macabre/horror 2D cartoon/anime style reminiscent of Gekidan Inu Curry. Known to be rather difficult for new players, requiring some tactical planning in the fights versus, say, Final Fantasy or Pokemon. Fights consist of 3 chibi kids on the left side of the screen against nightmare creatures on the right. Probably from 2015-2017 ish? I think it was pre-Covid, and wouldn't be surprised if it was like 10 years old now.
My exposure to the game comes from random livestreams, which I conveniently also don't remember who streamed it, though I've seen it mentioned and recommended in threads and conversations before. I thought the title was Witch's Curse or something, but apparently it isn't. Searched everywhere, even tried to get some buddies to help, but nothing comes up. Darkest Dungeon is sort of close.

Discussion This game looks massive. Has anyone heard of it?
Today I just discovered this game at the Steam event, and it doesn’t look too ambitious? What surprises me the most is the map, because it looks massive.
Does anyone know this game or has been able to try it? Honestly, I don't like the visual aspect at all, but everything else really catches my attention.
