Ohio should be blue then

u/Rrrrandle 1d ago

Ohio changed a year or two ago, no longer requires front plates.

As an Ohio resident, I can say with confidence that was over 6 years ago now...

Edit: My most upvoted post on reddit is literally a news article posted to the r/cars sub when it happened.

Way more than a year ago

bro never stopped quarantining from Covid and lost their calendar. Or dangerously close to a black hole.

In all honesty, this map was made for GeoGuessr so it’s probably about 5 years out of date.

Alaska should be blue as well

Yeah, changed in 2022, I was given two plates when I registered a car then but only had to put one on.

The Midwest patchwork is what gave it away for me

As of January 1,2025 Utah no longer required front plates either

There's a lot of states missing.

Let me guess, you relied on AI?

1

u/Meshable123 1d ago

AI would never get this right

1

u/BugRevolution 1d ago

...and since it isn't right, seems like you're essentially saying you used AI

1

u/Meshable123 1d ago

It's old its made for geogussr, so it's accurate based on the dates of Google coverage

Utah only requires rear now

1

u/ProfileAdventurous60 1d ago

Wait what is the asterisk for then

1

u/Meshable123 1d ago

Special Vehicles need front plates in those states

1

u/Alternative_Dust5027 1d ago

Utah should be blue as well

I was thinking the same thing. I recognized the map quickly. However, this map is already outdated.

u/Deinococcaceae 1d ago

Which state has changed?

2

u/ferndaddyak 1d ago

Alaska for one

2

u/andos4 1d ago

Ohio, Utah, and Alaska. Those are one plate states now.

Required very different from enforced though

1

u/SisterActTori 1d ago

I have been ticketed in CA for only having a back plate (albeit many years ago).

1

u/mezolithico 1d ago

Totally. I see Teslas everyday with no front plate though.

2

u/CharacterNet9821 1d ago

Blue is states that require only a rear license plate. Green states require both a front and a rear license plate.

Fun fact - only three Canadian provinces out of 11 provinces and three territories require front plates. BC, Manitoba and Ontario

I was having a hard time already and then I saw the asterisks and now I know I don’t know

1

u/Meshable123 1d ago

If you live in one of the blue states it might be even easier 👀

2

u/Hot-Return4542 1d ago

I’ve lived in six of those blue states in the past 9 years and would not have gotten the answer

2

u/Meshable123 1d ago

Tbf if you live there maybe you wouldn’t notice it as much because you’re used to it

1

u/Thin-Masterpiece-441 1d ago

I do, and always have amongst two of em.

1

u/BingBongDingDong222 1d ago

I live in one of the blue states. I saw the answer. I had no idea it was the case in the other states.

1

u/eyetracker 1d ago

Asterisk means you need the front plate if your car comes with a front bracket, but you aren't forced to drill the bumper if it doesn't.

1

u/One_Nectarine3077 1d ago

Fun fact: There's a cop car in Albuquerque, NM, that has a Miami Dolphins decorative plate on the front.

u/PM_ME_SOME_LUV 1d ago

Why can’t we all agree on the same plate laws? We’re supposed to be United

1

u/morgandealer 2h ago

We would have to all agree on something else first.

1

u/StarsCHISoxSuperBowl 1d ago

Texas doesn't really enforce if it's what I think it is. Never got pulled over for it.

I was expecting somebody to comment on the foxhole colors.
