It’s states with their northernmost point above the southernmost point of Canada. And I absolutely hate how we always act like it’s always cold in Canada especially those (like me) from southern Ontario where it doesn’t get as cold as most of the rest of the country. It’s colder in most of the US in the winter.

Southern Ontario is absolutely colder than most of the US in the winter lol, just not by a significant margin.
Toronto, Victoria, and Vancouver are not “cold cities” compared to cities in New England or the Midwest, but other big cities like Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary, Ottawa, Montréal, and Québec are all very cold by American standards, with the only comparable large American city being Minneapolis.

States that held slaves or were considered part of the broader South?

WV wouldn't be there in that case I dont think. Thats the original reason for the split iirc.

West Virginia had slaves. They left because the mountains kept them separated from the rest of Virginia, so socially they were isolated.

Thank you. The more you know.

In fact, every state had slaves even through part of the Civil War. Slavery was only outlawed near the end.

This is not true at all. Slavery was explicitly outlawed in most of the North, long before the war.

Yeah lol, lots of nuanced history surrounding the civil war. WV didnt leave because "VA wants slaves and we dont". WV left because their mountainous coal deposits lead them to be closer economically to the industry of the north rather than the agrarian life of the south. This is part of the same reason why Kentucky remained in the union. The coal deposits of middle Appalachia, combined with the almost nonexistent agriculture, meant that the region would never have survived under Dixie. I love this era of American history tbh, super cool time period.
