#ColonistLife Personally, I love it when a map-wide catastrophic weather event collapses the ecosystem and indirectly turns my barn into an animal sanctuary

If you use that pasture for your animals to graze in, you need to not plant haygrass in it. Haygrass gives less than 1/10th the nutrition per day that normal grass provides. Dandelions are a distant second giving 50% the nutrition per day as normal grass.
The best way is to set the pen marker to cut trees, and then make a growing zone for dandelions in the pen, and set it to not cut. That way, the pen marker will order trees to be cut, and then they will plant dandelions in the empty spots, but leave the grass alone.
Then plant your haygrass in a separate area.

Rimworld farming meta is crazy

I mean, it is a little realistic. Hay fields and pastures are different areas in real farms.

Okay this is actually super helpful thank you! I'm starting a new farm for my colony too

Hmm, I should set an auto cut for trees.
If you cut the trees, wouldn't the animals just eat everything else, then you won't have to cut those?

Yes, you are right. I edited my post up above after looking at the list of plants. Some plants are much more nutritious than dandelions, and some are a lot less nutritious.
If you want to compare the plants to see which is best, enable Dev-mode, then click the debug actions button at the top of the screen, and then the output tab at the top. Then click "Plants", and sort by nutrition per day.
There is also a button in the bottom right to export the data to CSV, so you can put it into a spreadsheet.
Here is what it looks like in my game, but I am using a lot of extra modded plants in this playthrough. https://imgur.com/a/cCqKfl7

Damn, didn’t know you could “set” things with the pen marker! I get so annoyed when trees and shit grow in the pasture, so thanks for this tip! It’s the first thing I’m trying when I get back online!

You made it so difficult to understand the job of "Just change the grow zone to dandelions bro"
29
u/VitaKaninen 2d ago
You lose about 1/2 the nutrition if you just set it to dandelions, but if that is easier for you, then go for it.
You can also just make the pen 2x as large to make up for it. But if you want to get the most nutrition out of your pen, at least you will know how.

u/A_Shadow 1d ago
I'm confused.
So what plant are you growing in your pen?
4
u/VitaKaninen 1d ago edited 1d ago
It will be a mixture of grass and dandelions in the pen. Grass is better, but you can not plant grass without mods.
When some of the grass dies, it might spawn a tree in its place, or nothing at all. If this happens, your people will plant a dandelion there, since it is the next best thing to grass that the player can sow.

I like compact bases and most of the animals i use are attack animals (i need MEAT), so nah, i prefer to harvest Human meat and Kill elephants using Camps with the transport shuttle if i ever need meat desperately or Leather.
Which is almost never since cultists love to attack me and i love Anomaly for the sheer amount of stuff you can achieve with Twisted meat and Dread leather.
You can buy for veggies if a cold snap happened or you really need food, or buy meat.

u/VitaKaninen 2d ago
Then I suppose that none of this applies to you, since you don't have animals that eat grass.

Oooh, I like the sunlamp retexture! What mod did that come from?
54
u/FrogWhoLivesInALog 2d ago
those are gas-powered sunlamps from Vanilla Helixien Gas Expanded

u/Agoraphotaku 2d ago
Vanilla expanded guys are just coming up with bonkers titles and slapping vanilla in front these days.

This one has always been funny to me, because helixien gas is something that another vanilla expanded mod added before being moved to a separate mod. So this would be more accurately titled "Vanilla Vanilla Helixian Gas Expanded Expanded".

u/FleetingRain 23h ago
Or rename the power one to "Vanilla Power Expanded" and then make this "Vanilla Power Expanded - Helixian Gas Module"
But weird, I never saw this mod in their list.

I’ve been using geysers to grow crops on an extremely cold map, some bunnies get in there and hang out. So cute

What is a "Long Night"? Is it also from a mod?

Ooooohhhh it seems fire! VE has so many good mods

u/Iceburg73 2d ago
Events expanded is probably one of my favorites of theirs. It's also extremely annoying. Long night for example kills off all plant life growing in the sun. So wild life also goes with it which is what happened in OPs picture.
That's also not counting global warming/ Ice age where your biome even changes.

u/Far_Comfortable980 2d ago
VE Events seems like the kind of mod I’d love on the lowest difficulty but hate on anything else.
11
u/eebenesboy 2d ago
You can pick and choose which events can happen. I think there is also a slider for frequency, but some events are literally bonkers so I turned them off. Had "psychic rain" the other day which causes any living being to age faster if they get caught outside and it can last up to a year. No thanks.

IMO OP should volunteer this information first.

Place a few extra turrets and it turns hunting into an incredible safe activity.
I had a long dark, placed a few sun lamps in my fields continued Buisness as usual,

u/FrogWhoLivesInALog 2d ago
they're worth more in IRL mood boost than in meat. (they have cute sprites and I like looking at them)

u/Forsworn91 2d ago
That makes sense, my Long dark had lasted for so long after nearly 2 years I was basically out of food

Which mod connects the regular walls (corners), so they look like from grav-ship?

I just had a 2 year ice age from Vanilla Events Expanded. It started like this, they quickly turned into me executing everything that entered my barn and predators died as soon as I noticed them.
5
u/NoBell7635 2d ago
I just kill any animal that steps into my map
So no animal actually die from these events because there is no animal left to kill 🙃

u/Kessenchu_ Having my ass kicked by Randy and enjoying it 2d ago
Madness.
All of it... madness.

What was the event that ruined the ecosystem but was still allowed you to grow plants?
Are the lights a mod for growing?

the only animal in my barn that is actually mine is the horse, but all are welcome nonetheless
