I'm so happy to see Lord of Scoundrels consistently get mentioned. It's probably my favorite HR of all time, and for some reason it's been popping up in my brain non stop for the last two weeks. Probably means it's time for a reread...

I'm excited that A Lady Awakened made the cut, that one's my favorite HR of all time! It's a month for HR classics I think!

3

u/Le_Beck Have you welcomed Courtney Milan into your life? 12d ago

It's probably been a decade since I read Texas Destiny, and seeing it around the sub so much makes me want to revisit it!

I did a manual count of our self-promo bans/warnings again for August and came up with the following numbers: 62 self-promo warnings, 28 writing warnings, and 57 deceptive self-promotion bans. This is almost 150 over the course of the month. The count is only individual users, not amount of self-promo - in some cases we were pulling 10+ comments from one person - so that's almost five people per day.

This sounds so frustrating for you guys, and so unfair to the rest of the readers.

Do you think these writers are unaware of the rules and spirit of the sub or they know but they don’t care?

I’m not a big audience for contemporary writers, but I wouldn’t knowingly read an author who purposefully disregarded rules about reader specific spaces, it’s tacky and rude.

22

u/VitisIdaea Her heart dashed and halted like an indecisive squirrel 12d ago edited 12d ago

Some of them are genuinely unaware; I'd say that's most of the people we warn for self-promo - they're new to the sub and haven't read the rules, basically, so think nothing of "hey my book fits this request, read The Little Mermaid's Billionaire Bicyclist Lover by me, Amaranth Author, today!" We warn them and direct them to the self-promo thread and off they go, better-informed and now-rule-abiding.

With the deceptive self-promo bans, many of them are definitely trying to present themselves as readers ("I just read this amazing book, The Little Mermaid's Billionaire Bicyclist Lover!"). And some deceptive self-promo'ers are giving it the full-court press - sockpuppets, multiple identities, months of comments, returning repeatedly after bans, etc. These are thankfully rare, but fill me with boiling irritation. I get that being an indie author is hard, but when you know you are in a reader space - and that the readers here value its being a reader space - it is a huge jerk move to try and wring those precious KU page views out of readers by purposefully deceiving them.

I do reluctantly have to admire the dedication and sheer stubbornness of the deceptive self promos, that’s quite a bit of work, smoke and mirrors all for a chance at tricking the reader.

Although with how often authors I find meh are recommended here, providing that all taste is subjective, I’ve sometimes wondered if some authors do succeed and slip through the cracks.

And now that I think about it, you Vitisldaea do post about Betty Neels a lot. More than anyone else? Hmmmmmmm……

Dammit, foiled again! *vanishes in a puff of smoke, only to reappear in a quaint sixteenth-century Dutch mansion in the Hague with a delicious plate of steamed sole and a pleasant English-speaking housekeeper waiting nearby while holding a large cat*

If you will permit a moment of snark: time and energy which could be spent writing their next book.

But yes, I am sure some writers do slip through the cracks. Genuinely, if folks ever think that is happening I would love for them to send us a modmail about the user/author they think is deceptively promoting. In some cases we've already looked into it and concluded that no, the author does not seem to be behind whatever is going on, but in other cases it's enough to get us on the right track.

The Little Mermaid's Billionaire Bicyclist Lover

Side note, because we all know there's been some...interesting....books out there, this immediately makes me question: does the billionaire only love bicyclists, does the billionaire ❤️🥵love🔥❤️ bicycles, or possibly is the billionaire an actual bicycle? 😂

Much love to the mods for staying on top of this. No matter how well it might match a request, I have no desire to get recs from the actual author of the book.

6

u/fruitismyjam attempted murder breaks trust 💔 12d ago

I know it was just created as a kooky example, but the title was what I zoned in on as well. 😂

I read it as Little Mermaid is FMC. Other MC is a billionaire who loves bicycles? (Maybe he/she/they have a bicycle-making empire? I think only Vera Valentine could make billionaire as an actual bicycle work. Man, I could make so many inappropriate jokes here.)

I know this isn't something the sub does but man for these specific violations I'd be cool with a shitlist of the repeat offenders.

Wow! That’s way more than I would have guessed!

12

u/VitisIdaea Her heart dashed and halted like an indecisive squirrel 12d ago

We are at more than 400,000 members so it's still proportionally small! And at least some of these are older comments that got flagged for us just this month (or ongoing deceptive self-promo that we finally got enough evidence to ban, my least favorite category ever). But yeah, it's a lot from the perspective of identifying and handling them - and it goes some way towards indicating why we the mods simply don't remember most of them when end of month rolls around!

Just one to say thanks to the mods and developers of u/romance-bot for these monthly insight posts. Always super interesting and always a great place to look for reads.

19

u/Cowplant_Witch romance herpetologist 12d ago

The top author, Ali Hazelwood (138) also has two books in the top ten—Deep End (32) and The Love Hypothesis (25). This makes sense.

Unless I’m just not seeing it, the second-place author, Lisa Kleypas (132) does not have any books in the top twenty, and only one in the top ten historical romances—Devil in Winter (16).

That means people are probably recommending a lot of different Lisa Kleypas books, enough to add up to 132 total recommendations, but her top book only got 16 of those.

I think that’s neat, and goes to show how broadly loved she is. She’s the opposite of a one-hit-wonder.

6

u/fruitismyjam attempted murder breaks trust 💔 12d ago

That’s so cool to note! I would’ve never thought about the numbers in that way.

Thanks for the data analysis for those of us who are numbers-incompetent. 😊

3

u/Cowplant_Witch romance herpetologist 12d ago

You’re welcome! Honestly, I was like “I should read more Kleypas. What’s her top book?” and then she wasn’t listed in the top books, so I got curious!

2

u/fruitismyjam attempted murder breaks trust 💔 12d ago

Several Kleypas books are on sale for 0.99 on Amazon US (and Amazon UK, I think?)!

And seriously, there’s no way I would’ve made those connections based on the numbers. I would’ve just been like 🤷🏻‍♀️.

2

u/Cowplant_Witch romance herpetologist 12d ago

Thanks! I just picked up the first two Ravenels books, {Cold-Hearted Rake by Lisa Kleypas} and {Marrying Winterbourne by Lisa Kleypas}, as well as {Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas} because Tom Severin comes up a lot on the HR subreddit, and {Dreaming of You by Lisa Kleypas} just because it seemed interesting.

(Ok, because one of the reviews mentions the MMC used to sell himself to aristocratic women, and it reminded me of The Devil is a Marquess by Elisa Braden.)

I skipped {It Happened One Autumn by Lisa Kleypas} which is also on sale, because I'm not sure about the slut shaming and reckless horse endangerment mentioned in reviews. I'm aware that I'm being petty and the ones I bought probably contain similar stuff or worse.

If anyone here speaks Portuguese, "Casamento Hathaway: Um conto (Os Hathaways) (Portuguese Edition)" is currently free.

2

u/fruitismyjam attempted murder breaks trust 💔 11d ago

I haven’t read any Kleypas (yet), but I had previously purchased Again the Magic when it was on sale and got Dreaming of You today. 😊

I debated getting the other 3 you mentioned from the Ravenals series, especially Chasing Cassandra (which I’ve seen rec’ed several times), but from a brief dive into the sub archives, I wasn’t sure if it was best to wait until after reading books from the Wallflower series? And I think some of the books are best read in series order (i.e. it was rec’ed to read Marrying Winterbourne after Cold-Hearted Rake). Ugh, I get so confused with authors have back catalogues with stories that may intersect from different series.

I also thought it might be best to wait until I’ve tried a Kleypas book to make sure I actually like them, hah. (But they’re currently on sale, so it’s a dilemma!)

2

u/Cowplant_Witch romance herpetologist 11d ago

Yeah, I got cold-hearted rake partly as an intro to marrying winterbourne, because I had heard that too. I decided not to worry about the wallflower books. I did realize after buying one of them that it’s narrated by Mary Jane Wells (my favorite narrator) so I may end up listening to them instead. I guess buying them might have been a mistake in that case, but at least it wasn’t too much.

2

u/fruitismyjam attempted murder breaks trust 💔 11d ago

From what I understand, you can read them as standalones, but characters from other books may make an appearance. (I think some of the MCs in the Ravenals series are kids of the MCs in the Wallflower series?) Either way, you should be fine.

As for Marrying Winterbourne, the MCs are introduced in the previous book (Cold-Hearted Rake), which is why it’s best read in order. I’m not sure about Chasing Cassandra.

1

u/fornefariouspurposes 11d ago

I'm not sure about the slut shaming and reckless horse endangerment mentioned in reviews.

I know what scene is being referenced in regard to "horse endangerment" but I have no clue what prompted accusations of "slut shaming". For what it's worth, the horse was never in danger, only the FMC herself. Specifically she insisted on doing something she could have done perfectly riding astride but would have gotten her thrown from the horse riding side-saddle.

1

u/Cowplant_Witch romance herpetologist 11d ago

From the review: But...is Westcliff that much of a catch? Decidedly NO. ... His shaming of her in the garden, after he's given into his desires and is close to making her orgasm, and then suddenly stops, shames her for making it 'too easy', to try to show her that she'd be too easily seduced by some other cad? TOXIC. Bad boyfriend, bad man. No no no no no. ...

It does make a difference if the horse wasn't in danger, thanks for that. The FMC being in danger is much more compelling.

3

u/fruitismyjam attempted murder breaks trust 💔 11d ago

Without having read the book and having zero context for what’s being discussed, I find it funny that it’s more acceptable that the human was in danger than the horse. 😂 (I understand the sentiment though. 😬)

3

u/Cowplant_Witch romance herpetologist 11d ago

The FMC being in danger is angsty and dramatic but a horse (or a cat or a dog) being in danger is just unnecessary. 😆

3

u/fruitismyjam attempted murder breaks trust 💔 11d ago

I’ve risked my life to avoid hitting a squirrel with my car, so I get it. 😂

2

u/fornefariouspurposes 11d ago edited 11d ago

That's a bad-faith interpretation of the scene. Westcliff was trying to warn Lillian about OM and she insisted that she was "far too experienced" to fall for seduction (though she was a virgin who'd never done more than kiss). Was Westcliff a jerk for demonstrating how easy it was to be caught up in passion? Yeah. But it was not his intention to shame her nor did she feel shamed, just angry.

Basically Marcus is domineering but also usually right and Lillian is strong-willed and defiant to the point of endangering herself rather than admit Marcus is right.

2

u/Cowplant_Witch romance herpetologist 11d ago

Oh, yeah, I can see what you mean. It sounds like I definitely need to read that scene for myself. A lot of reviews can be very off the mark. I appreciate having another perspective.

That's interesting! The other weird thing is when I search for the book and author, I don't see it mentioned anywhere on the sub- are these stats sub specific or do they maybe pull from other places? Also possible that my search skills are terrible, though, to be fair.

17

u/A_Seductive_Cactus Praise Kink Princess 👸🏻 12d ago

These stats are sub specific, but if a user calls the bot and that comment is deleted or removed afterwards, the bot call is still 1 data point regardless. So unfortunately self-promoters sometimes make it onto this list - we try to keep an eye out and remove them before it goes up but I missed this one!

11

u/schkkarpet if villain, why hot? 12d ago

No, I did look too and I found out that the user's comments were removed on this sub but I found them on other subreddits 😬

12

I did the same thing, but it looks like the mods banned the user for self promotion. I don’t know why the bot still picked up the recommendations if the comments were deleted.

Damn, this makes me scared to rec obscure books.

I'm on newsletter lists of a few lesser known self-published authors and I've had like 4 different arcs from them this year and then some of them do pick up in ratings / reviews and some, well, flop. I've followed one author for like 3+ books now and only their newest blew up. Then I've followed another one and their newest release... got 4 reviews and sank into the depths of Amazon, idk why, it was a pretty enjoyable paranormal romance.

Also I loved one rec thread where someone was saying they're going through romance.io new releases for a specific trope tag fishing for obscure books, because they found a hidden gem. 2 friends of mine already read this book after I forwarded them the rec, and they both liked it, so win-win.

7

u/VitisIdaea Her heart dashed and halted like an indecisive squirrel 11d ago

Genuinely, please don't be afraid to recommend obscure books. Plenty of obscure books are read and recommended by readers here on the subreddit and we love that. There are specific things the mod team looks for and uses to identify people who are deceptively self-promoting, and "recommends obscure books" is barely even a starting point.

2

u/Synval2436 Reverse body betrayal: the mind says YES but the body says NO 9d ago

Okay. 😅 I imagine a starting point is "fresh account, only recommends one book across 20 different subreddits", I've seen that a few times and I'm like... can you be any more unsubtle?

I love the data posts! 🤓 question from me please, I thought I remembered seeing somewhere that real people fic was banned here? I joined after rules had been put in place about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce so I'm probably muddling stuff up as real person fic and fan fiction aren't my cup of tea.

The reason I ask is one of the books is about Hozier apparently : if not for my baby

12

u/VitisIdaea Her heart dashed and halted like an indecisive squirrel 12d ago

Hi, that's a good question! We do ban RPF, but that just means actual real person fiction. If a published book is veiled RPF - no matter how thinly! - it's allowable on the subreddit; we can't really determine how closely the characters are based on real people or whether it "counts" as RPF. They're fictional characters, even if they're closely based on real people.

Separately, we don't allow book requests based on real people or real relationships. People can't say "I want a book with an MMC like Hozier," but they can say "I would like a contemporary MF romance with a musician MMC."

13

u/fruitismyjam attempted murder breaks trust 💔 12d ago

I’m not going to lie, with Taytay & Kelce’s recent engagement, I’m real grateful for that RPF ban. I feel like the sub would’ve gotten inundated with book requests. (It’s my understanding that it happened in the past when they first started dating.)

7

u/prettysureIforgot Gimme all the sad anxious bois 12d ago edited 12d ago

I think even the mm_romancebooks sub got a few Swift/Kelce requests "but make it MM" which was, to be blunt (and possibly overly judgmental on my part) just too damn much.

4

u/fruitismyjam attempted murder breaks trust 💔 12d ago

I mean, I get the appeal, I guess. Taytay (in addition to being extremely talented) is great at cultivating parasocial relationships with fans, creating a very devoted following. Travis is talented in his own right and seems like a decent enough guy. But yeah, it was really annoying when I couldn’t turn on the TV or open a freaking web browser without some news about them popping up.

In the end, they’re just two people! (With a lot more money, popularity, and visibility, hah.) Also, I, personally, prefer Jason (who I know is married), and it was hard to root for Travis when he had that pornstache… (I’ll shut up now.)

I’m surprised to see Against A Wall have such a powerful resurgence. (But also not surprised because Against A Wall is awesome.)

And it’s pretty cool to see that 2 out of the top 5 books with Diverse MCs are books with Asian MCs! 😀

Thanks (as always) for compiling the lists!

Edit: Omg, “resurgence” not “reassurance.” 🤦🏻‍♀️ What’s wrong with me.

Thank you for this as I enjoy some stats.

In the Diverse MC listing, 11 and 18 are Take a Hint Dani Brown.

Yes, thank you for pointing out! Just got that fixed. That book usually shows up twice in the listing, once for the Black MC tag and once for the South Asian MC tag and sometimes I miss removing the duplicate. More coffee needed today!

Excited to see {Ronan by G Eilsel} on the list! I highly recommend it for anyone that enjoyed the Monstrous series by Lily Mayne.

Also it's always interesting to see this whole list. A lot of the most-mentioned aren't super new books, so it's interesting to see a lot of them have consistent staying power.

I love seeing older books holding strong in the Top 20!

For the Fans is one of the best books I've read all year. Love to see it mentioned!
