Book Request What is the best book series you’ve ever read?
Hello everyone,
I have recently been reading lots of book series and I came to the devastating realization that just because there are many books to a couple, friend group, family, etc. it does not mean that it will be good.
I know that this is pretty common knowledge but for some reason I believed that if you stick to a book series for long enough, you would subconsciously get connected to it and love it even if you didn’t think it was the best at first.
I now realize I was sorely mistaken after reading 4+ book series (all with 3+ books) and not liking them and not really getting attached to the worlds either.
I was curious as to what book series you have read that have made you so attached that you feel like you are missing the world after you end the series and why. I don’t mean “oh that book was good”, I mean you put down that final book and have to take a breather to take in the fact that the series is done, the kinds of books that made you smile after listening to a song in public and realizing it was in the series. The kinds of series that you think of for months and can’t find anything that compares to it.
NOTE: I was going to put this in discussions but I didn’t want the mods to think I was trying to sneak a request into discussions. I really am interested in peoples reasons for falling for certain series and just didn’t know what to label it under 😭

{Hidden Legacy by Ilona Andrews} is this for me. I love all aspects of this series. The main characters, the secondary characters, the family dynamics, the psycho MMCs with hearts of gold, the whip-smart FMCs who aren’t pushovers, the world building, the magical system…I wish I could re-experience reading it for the first time.

The Ravenels series by Lisa Kleypas. The first book is {Cold-Hearted Rake Lisa Kleypas} And while the first book isn’t a strong start it’s. A great introduction to Helen and Rhys’ story which continues in the second book.

Cold-hearted Rake is honestly not good compared to the rest of the books. If it wasn't for the one scene with Helen and Rhys, it would be a total loss for me!

u/Vesuvia36 1d ago
I agree. I hated the way it ended with Kathleen getting between them. I only reread it for West and Helen/Rhys

Another vote for Hidden Legacy series by Ilona Andrews here, but I love the {Kate Daniels series by Ilona Andrews} even more. Everyone says the first book isn’t very good but I disagree. As a rule, I like MUCH sluttier books, and paranormal isn’t my number one genre… but their writing and characters and world building is so fucking good.

I have a few... {Immortals after dark series} by kresley cole. About 17 books now and still ongoing, different lead in each book but we have characters that cross over , it's paranormal/ fantasy with a lot of badass, take no shit fmc and powerful mmc that are obsessed with their females, even if they are a little or a lot morally grey.
{Guild hunter series} by Nalini Singh. Here we have archangels, angels, vampires and human vampire hunters.
I think book 1 - 3 is about the same couple, a human vampire hunter and the archangel of New York, while the rest of the series still kinda revolves around their world, we have other couples from book four I think. You can expect a mad power drunk archangel bent on conquering the world, rogue vampires, a human turned angel... fun stuff really.
This are my 2 favourite series so far.

Definitely {Monstrous Series by Lily Mayne}. I loved every character in every book, and I've re-read most of them.
There aren't that many series where I've read every single book. I'll just read the ones I like the look of and skip the characters or tropes I'm not interested in.

I LOVE series and I will give recs ranked from please please please read it I NEED to share this to This was satisfying.
First {Hidden Legacy by Ilona Andrews}. So much love for this series. It was a good day for the world when Gordon Andrews & Ilona met in writing class. There is so much world building. The action/fighting scenes are as immersive as watching a movie. The MC's are badass, funny, and mysterious. The supporting characters distinctive and fully fledged. I can't state enough how awesome the characters are. I love the Baylor Family. There is magic noble houses and epic danger. I've just convinced myself to read it again. Series is not finished though.
Second {Mated to the King by Lola Glass}. Humor, action, found family. Interesting concept and world building. Big Daddy Hale for the win. I gotta shout out Lola Glass's other series as well never disappoints.
Third {Troubleshooters by Suzanne Brockmann}. Navy seals, WW2 flashbacks, Great characters, and a very long series. Themes of inclusion and lgbtq support. Characters that are not caricatures.

Best series ever, with great world building or excellent characters or both are as follows:
Nalini Singh- her ‘Guildhunter’ (archangel) novels is amazing. Here I absolutely adore the world building & the characters in this series -oh also) her ‘Psy-Changeling’ series also is pretty good.
Christine Feehan both her Ghostwalker Series (military men and strong orphan females w special powers) and her Carpathians series (a cool & different kind of vampires) are both amazing series.
Laurel Hamilton (spelled wrong prob) Is about a female necromancer w many supernatural gifts and one curse, but it’s also a multiple lovers book -just fyi/vampire and werewolf)
And from when I was much younger, tho it’s not a series but just allll her books- Johanna Lindsey … (old timey romance w rakes & ladies, and then diff books with strong females on diff alien world romances just many diff types of books & all are well written, etc)..
Laurann Dohner has SO many diff AMAZING series I luv all of them. VESLOR Mates series (totally alien mates they are cat type shapeshifters w a humanoid body change shape also..) VLG series (vampires, lycanthropes and gargoyles.)
Marjorie M Lou- Dirk & Steele series. (About gifted women, shapeshifters magic, dragons, magical creatures and people etc..)
Oh, which reminds me of another cool world build which’s about alien mates-
‘Warriors of the Lathar’ by Mina Carter..
Actually , tbh-I have SO MANY diff amazing series that I luv bcuz I have been reading my entire life… I just don’t have my Ereader w me now unfortunately, lol, so this is all I can remember off the top of my head. (Sorry, I have serious memory probs..) but maybe I’ll remember to edit this more later…

The Hathaways by Lisa Kleypas even though I don’t really like the first book. The others more than make up for it. Desperate Duchesses by Eloisa James was pretty good and memorable too. YA - when I was like 20, I was obsessed with Vampire Academy and new books were still coming out and it’s stuck with me. They’re such good re-reads. I love the Boston Rebels series by Julia Conners. It’s a hockey one & the characters are great and so are the stories. Those are the ones that stick out and are my favorites, Boston Rebels being the recent one as new books are still coming out.

I personally have a very hard time reading MM because I'm the self-insert kinda reader and any MM scenes in a poly/RH universe makes it harder because the MM relationships always goes back further and I always feel that the FMC is left out in that dynamic.
But {The Original Sinners by Tiffany Reisz} is honestly so well written to me, super taboo and if you really think hard about it there's all sorts of wrong to pick on but I will delete my morals away for this universe. The world building is so good I wish I had a chance to pay a visit. I'm still searching so damn hard for a series like this but preferably with MF only but its difficult (I also can't imagine a MF book series going for 8 books and more without being overly draggy so...its me, I'm the problem 🤪)

I'm not sure I can pick out a Number 1 series I've read, but I've had several I love.
Nora Roberts' Bride Quartet series. This one is yearly re-read for me. Just love it.
Nora Roberts' Inn Boonsboro series. Only three books, but seeing all three brothers, plus their widowed mom, coupled up was pretty awesome. They work normal jobs, in their family business.
Dorothy Garlock's Wabash River series. From my favorite romance author of all time. 3 books in the series, plus a 4th sequel. And, side characters from the original series show up in other books, so it's like everyone in the American West knows everyone else. Many of the books in her catalog are re-reads for me on a regular basis.
Christine Feehan's Dark series. A different take on vampires. I think the last count of the number in the series is like 38, and counting. So fabulous.
Bernard Cornwell's The Last Kingdom series. Not a romance series, although it has romance elements to it. The main character has so many wives and girlfriends over the course of the 13 book series. I took a VERY long time to finish the last book because I was sad to see it end.

{Parallel by Elizabeth O'Roark} gave me my biggest book hangover ever. I am desperate for her to put out another book in the series, but unfortunately her contemporary romance novels sell a lot better for her than this series did I think. It's a shame because it's SO well done, I love how all the little details actually come together over 4 books. I kept thinking I had everything figured out and nope. I still have so many questions!
Her contemporary romances would qualify too though, she has a few interconnected series. While Parallel made me cry, her other ones make me laugh.

I loved the Queen Cove series from Stephanie Archer. I read all of the books and they just got better and better with each one. It’s funny cause I’d fall in love with the characters in one book and complain to my husband that I don’t want to read the next one cause they don’t seem as lovable and then I’d read it anyways and fall in love with them. Repeat for every book in the series. My husband would give me a look every time I’d be like “ugh I loved this book I just don’t want to read the next one” and then I’d be like “omg that one was better than the last one” 😂

My two Roman empires right now are Ravenhood series by Kate Stewart. Flock Exodus and The Finish Line are the 3 main books. She has two legacy books out too. I love her story telling and characters. I’ve listened to the audios multiple times. She’s working on a manuscript for the series and it ruined me for most other books.
And although I’m not yet done, Outlander by Diana Gabaldon. About Scottish Highlanders and time travel and so much more but mainly Jamie Alexander Malcom McKenzie Fraser and Clare who always find eachother no matter the time and circumstance.
Both series have me in a chokehold.

[The Bergman Brothers by Chloe Liese] is a frequently reread series for me. It's the idyllic family where everyone has flaws but works through them. There's a lot of therapeutic communication conversations, chronic illnesses represented, and emotional/psychological issues are addressed. There are a few "scenes" in the books that make me scratch my head (mostly how a few characters manage financially or afford certain things), but that's romance and fiction.
The only really big complaint about the series that I have is that Chloe Liese has not written a "prequel" with the Bergman-Bezuidenhout parents' story and their "wingpersons" Elin's brother Jakob and Willa's Mom, Joy. People need to flood her Instagram and other socials to show the demand is super high for a prequel!
There is never going to be an excellent, perfect book/series (IMO) because for me, there are frequently some fantastic/fantasy ideals in books and I am a little more of a realist (a true oxymoron because I read romance with HEA and stuff where most books end in HEA, even though there's always more conflict down the road). But it's fun to keep reading and try to find one! :)

Love Chloe Liese. Both the Bergman Brothers and the Wilmot Sisters series are among my favorite series.

I loved the Alliance Series by SJ Tilly which gets mentioned a lot on her. I think Nero and King have one of the best bromances ever. Plus their banter, the fact that they are unhinged but yet still believable characters makes them my favorite reread. The Hangmen series by Tillie Cole. I hope she finishes it one day. Unlike any MC books I’ve ever read. The New York Billionaires by Olivia Hayle. Each book had a unique plot line and I love how over the course of the series the guys went from being business associates to true friends.

I'll stick to romance series, but I love a lot of non-romance series too! Worth noting that I find most these books hot, even though I'm not necessarily into what the characters are into. But there are lots of books that are hot but I don't love--so now you've got me thinking about why I love these!
Priest series, first book is {Priest by Sierra Simone}. I'm a semi-practicing/semi-lapsed Catholic. I find her philosophizing on Catholicism and sexuality fascinating. Series is incomplete.
Galactic Love, first book is {Strange Love by Ann Aguirre}. Really thoughtful and interesting considerations of what gender, attraction, and sexuality look like in non-humanoid aliens & androids. Series incomplete.
Corsairs series (first book is {The Corsair's Captive by Ruby Dixon}) and the Corsair Brothers series (first book is {Adiron by Ruby Dixon}). Alien space pirates with a conscience! Great world-building. Takes the fun parts of Ice Planet Barbarians and gets rid of the breeding kink/babies/homemaker obsession that I don't like.
Winternight trilogy, {The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden} is book 1. Astoundingly well-researched Russian folklore, fascinating characters, captivating storytelling.
Monstrous (first book is {Soul Eater by Lily Mayne}). No idea how she manages to make post-apocalyptic high-stakes drama feel like a romcom but she does.
Kiss Quotient (first book is {The Kiss Quotient by Helen Hoang}). I love how she writes neurodiversity. Book 3 is one of my very favorite romance books--the writing, the FMC's character and growth, just beautiful.

I can't do a series with more than 3 books. It just gets too long for me and I get disconnected from the characters. I really like the Caraval and Once Upon a Broken heart by Stephanie Garber. Each series is 3 books long and takes place in the same world. Out of the two, OUABH is my favorite. It just has series fairytale vibes. I also really enjoy duets like the Crimson Moth and The Shepherd King duets. I feel like most stories can and should be told as simply as possible and that when an does a huge series, they're just stretching it out to sell more books, not because the story needs it

Am currently on book 6 of 6 (i believe that’s the end?) of The Four by Becca Steele and i’ll be very sad when i finish! I wish there was a 7th book for the last 2 characters who aren’t really a part of “The Four” group but are definitely strong side characters, but also, this could ruin the idea of the story being about the group so i can see why she stopped at book 6 if this is the case.

Three years ago I read the London Lovers series and the Harris Brothers series, plus the spinoffs, 15 books in total by Amy Daws. I had the biggest book hangover afterwards, and I have been seeking another series that can pull me into the characters' lives like these did.
Characters in earlier books still appear in later books because of how they are interconnected. So many delightful surprises along the way. Characters suffer tragedy together, overcome trauma, and celebrate life's milestones. They experience conflict and drama outside the MC relationships. Overall, very complex and likeable characters.
I was sad to finish reading all of them because it felt like I had moved away from close friends. I missed them all like real people.
London Lovers
- Becoming Us
- A Broken Us
- London Bound
- Not The One
Transition
- Strength
Harris Brothers
- Challenge
- Endurance
- Keeper
- End Goal (short story)
- Surrender
- Dominate
Harris Brothers spinoffs
- Payback
- Blindsided
- Replay
- Sweeper

Sarah J Maas - ACOTAR (basic but no less true)
Nalini Singh - Guild Hunter/Psy changeling (GH more for the characters, Psy changeling more for the world/plot)

If you’re into romantasy (and open door isn’t a must for you), the Folk of Air series, beginning with {Cruel Prince by Holly Black}, is my shiiit. It’s like if GoT—at its best—was set in a faerie world. Perfect for autumnal reading vibes, btw. Most bad ass babe(s) ever AND the banter with the love interest (once it kicks in) will have you screaming. But it is a slow burn to get to said romance though, because it’s true enemies to lovers a la you think they might actually kill one another.

The {Clecanian series by Victoria Aveline} was the first sci-fi romance series I actually loved. I didnt think I liked alien romance at all until I read this series. It's a new couple every book with the previous relationships being occasionally referenced but it has a comprehensive world building and political storyline in the background that i feel very invested in. The series got me out of a reread slump and ive reread some books multiple times.
