Lapin matka marraskuussa: alku- vai puoliväli parempi lumen ja revontulien kannalta?

Ystäväni ja minä suunnittelemme 10 päivän matkaa Lapissa nähdäksemme revontulia. Aluksi ajattelimme tulla 30.10.-13.11., mutta tutkimme vähän ja huomasimme, että silloin ei yleensä ole vielä paljon lunta, joten maisemat eivät ehkä näytä yhtä taianomaisilta.

Nyt harkitsemme, että tulisimme vähän myöhemmin, noin 10.-15. marraskuuta kymmeneksi päiväksi, toivoen että silloin olisi jo enemmän lunta maassa.
Toisaalta olemme lukeneet, että marraskuussa voi olla myös pilvisempää, mikä voi tehdä revontulien metsästyksestä vaikeampaa. Aiomme vuokrata auton, jotta voimme ajaa ympäriinsä ja etsiä kirkasta taivasta jos tarvitaan.

Suunnitelmamme on aloittaa Rovaniemeltä, sitten jatkaa pohjoiseen kohti Ivaloa, ja jos ehdimme, ehkä käydä jopa Nordkappissa Norjassa.

• Onko marraskuun puoliväli mielestäsi parempi ajankohta kuin marraskuun alku?
• Kuinka todennäköistä on, että silloin olisi jo lunta?
• Entä pilvisyyden ja revontulien kannalta, onko marraskuun alku parempi kuin puoliväli, vai suunnilleen sama?

Hi everyone!
My friend and I are planning a 10-day trip to Finnish Lapland to see the northern lights. At first we thought about coming from October 30 to November 13, but after some research we saw that there’s usually not much snow yet, so the landscapes might look less magical.

We’re now thinking about coming a bit later, around November 10–15 for 10 days, hoping there will be more snow on the ground.
On the other hand, we read that November can also be more cloudy, which could make aurora hunting harder. We’ll rent a car so we can drive around and try to find clear skies if needed.

Our plan is to start in Rovaniemi, then head north towards Ivalo, and if we have time maybe even go up to Nordkapp in Norway.

• Do you think mid-November is a better choice than early November?
• How likely is it that there will be snow by then?
• And in terms of cloudiness and northern lights, is early November better than mid-November, or about the same?

Any local advice would be super helpful, thanks a lot!

The later the better, but also probably more expensive. I don't think it makes much difference in terms of cloudiness whether you arrive in early or mid November. Snow is not at all guaranteed even in mid November but of course the odds are better the later you visit.

You can't really know yet if there will be snow or auroras in early November. If it snows in November, it can still melt away quickly. The best northern lights season begins usually after the new years.

There isn't really a snow guarantee even in november, and you can see auroras starting even in september/october. Of course if you want snow there more likely is snow in november than october.

Also the closer you get to christmas the more expensive and harder it is to get accommodation.

Each date has its pros and cons, and seeing the auroras you always need to get lucky with the conditions anyway.
