54x28x21cm is much bigger than 22L and much bigger than the Ryanair small bag allowance

Its 22L according to the specifications, but thanks for your help all the same. I wasnt sure how strict RA are. This has been my travel bag for the past 12 flights I've been on but this is my first time with RA.

Ryanair doesn't care about your other flights.

It's easy to calculate if you can multiply.

I honestly dont care, Osprey rate it at 22L, I rate it as a bag that I put my stuff in. Drop them an email and tell them they cant calculate correctly if you wish. I only care if its acceptable for the flight.

-54cm height

-Only care if it's acceptable for the flight

The answer is in those extra 14cm

Yeah, I came to ask the question as I've always used this bag and wanted to ask the question hoping everyone would assure me it would be fine but I've seen a lot in the press about bags and RA. I don't want complications so I just wanted to run it past the pros.

Thank you,

Gotcha. I also travel with a bigger bag than the allowed dimensions and I just don't pack it fully. If I am asked to place it in the size rack I just squish it and it's been fine for now. 54 seems to be a lot more than it though and it might be worth it investing in a new backpack (which might still be cheaper than getting fined even once)

Then Osprey is wrong.

It's your bag.

And NO, it's not acceptable as a small under seat bag because it's massively oversized.

It may well have been perfectly acceptable as a *carry-on* (usually something like 55 x 40 x 20-23cm allowed) but it's significantly larger than the free "small bag" size allowed by Ryanair, Vueling, easyJet etc. The one that's supposed to go under the seat in front of you. You might get away with it, you might get charged. Depends how lucky you feel! I just go by the rules because I don't like that kind of hassle.

That's 31.75 L, not 22L.

Ryanair small bag dimensions are now 40x30x20cm.

Your bag is massively oversized and will cost you a €75 fee at the gate.

Okay great.

The size limits are 40x30x20, so, no. Use a bag within these figures.

I honestly don't understand why people find it so hard.

Every day I open reddit to "Hey guys is my bag okay, it's 60cm long but not very wide" and then they get pissy when the comments say no

As long as it fits in the little metal box they have by the gate then it’s good. Just don’t put much stuff in it and you should be good. I did this with my Osprey Quasar which is 26l and it fit into it easily.

It wasn’t Ryan air, but I’ve done this with easyJet and Jet2.

So there's zero tolerance with the limits? Thank you, just wanted confirmation as this has always been my travel bag previously.

The truth is that it's a coin toss.

There are plenty of people who have taken a larger bag onboard and got away with it and there are plenty of people who got caught out at the gate and had their bag put in the sizer and had to pay more because it wouldn't fit.

No one can predict the probability that you'll be in the former camp, so it's a risk you choose to take... Or you pay the extra amount for priority boarding and the same bag to be a 'cabin bag' that goes in the overhead locker, to avoid any doubts.

Again probably a stupid question but ill embarrass myself and ask, would I be stopped using the overhead locker for my small bag I always just throw it in there so I have nothing in the way of my feet 😬

I appreciate you taking the time helping a first time flyer.

Same answer really, it's a coin toss. Depends on how many other people have cabin bags and where they can be placed... And if a steward notices you don't have anything under the seat.

Thanks for your help 😊

You are very welcome

Just as an addition to this, if the boarding is done correctly, all the people who’ve paid for cabin bags will get onto the aeroplane first, so will all be seated with their bags up by the time the under-seat bags only passengers are allowed on. So if there is still free overhead locker space by the time you get on, it’s fine to put your small bag up, in my experience.

So flew Ryanair last week. Guy two people in front of me had to measure his bag (oversized! Extra payment!) but the guy behind him? Walked through without issue. Why the difference? Who knows, but both were obviously oversized. So, yeah, luck of the draw.

Note that the 40cm max height is actually a bit more if you place the bag in diagonally, though your depth gets cut a bit that way.

What do we think of this? This looks like a good cheap option.

It depends how full you pack the bag.
If that pack is only half full, then it will likely fit in their sizers just fine. They won't care about it then.
They don't measure your bag, it just has to fit into the sizer.
Don't overpack the bag and check it as soon as you get to the airport. If it does not fit, take out a few things and stick them in your pockets.
Don't wait until you start queuing for the flight as that's just asking for trouble.

I’m hoping to bring my 8ftx8ftx40ft shipping container - it’s a little over the size on the website but do you think it’ll be ok? 🫠

If you don’t fill it to the brim and leave some space to compact it, it can pass. The rule isn’t about the exact size, but about whether it fits in the box and then, you put it under your seat. They don’t actually measure the sides with a ruler.

If your bag looks oversized, Ryanair are pretty militant about checking them as you board. I wouldn't bank on them not noticing.
