BYOND BYOND development news 9/5/25
It's our third day of shipping procedure inspections and I'm already exhausted from all the paperwork. Reports, signatures, checklists, and I'm not even the one doing the real work. When this is all over I'm handing out discretionary bonuses to the dock and customs workers who make this process go the smoothest. But at least the process hasn't turned up anything too egregious, except a certain engineer with deplorable taste in music who was cutting corners to get his hands on vintage tech for his fascination with millennial reenactment. For a lot of reasons I'm afraid to even ask what that clamshell-looking device is. Anyway the rest of the inspection has been proceeding better than I think any of us expected, so let's keep it that way so we can get back to our regular work sooner.
- Still no maintenance release, but another one is probably coming soon.
- More testing and documentation got done for 517, along with identifying an interesting compiler shortfall with pointers.
- At least one change made for 517 was backported to the next 516 release, and I'll probably do the same with the aforementioned pointer issue.
- Massive thanks to all the BYOND Members and Patreon and SubscribeStar supporters who keep this running!
- Screw you, Spez.
The long-form news is posted on the BYOND forums. Today's early-access Patreon post is a bit of a high-level look at why a change made for CanSlide() represents a paradigm shift and what that might mean for the future. Remember, if you want to be rid of the clown for good the only way to do it is to get most of the team owners not to renew his contract. See you next week. I might stop yawning by then.

General Thoughts on Stationeers?
Curious if anyone tinkers around with Stationeers, and what your thoughts are on it being essentially being a 3D SS13 for the Engie crew...

General Self Antag Servers?
Any servers with self antag allowed similar to vanderlin? Where you can self antag if there’s role play and escalation
Help Combat interactions
So I know there are some lesser know/ documented interactions with combat and items
Heres the list of which I know exist:
•if someones arm is dislocated and you try to bend it back in but do it on harm intent and not help you break the persons arm •you can slice peoples throats with any blade if you have a aggressive grab on them and aim at the head then right click •you can smash peoples limbs on to tables (not the whole person) if you aggro grab that limb and harm intent the table •you can suffocate people if you put a pillow over their head and hold it there •you can break someones kneecaps if you right click them with a baseball bat while aiming at said leg
Do you guys know anymore of these or is there a list where most of these are pointed out? ((Btw I’m curious for all code bases not just TG so if you know anymore for para, goon, etc. do write them down!))

Story Thread What is the most incompetent player you have encountered?
We all goof up sometimes, and Nanotrasen isn't too hard on unskilled workers. But what is the most accident-prone, reckless, incompetent player you have encounered in a round of SS13?

General The state of SS13 now
Top server on the hub is the capital of furry ERP server, and just behind it is furry ERP server medieval edition.
This is the absolute state of Space Station 13 now. What space sim? You play this game to pixelbump your sparkledog with another sparkledog.
It's hillarious that the game's description is still "Stay alive inside Space Station 13", it should have been changed to "Stay dry inside of coomer sim 13".

General I miss FulpStation.
It ran pretty okay for me, had fun content, and it was said that people were kinda cliquey but that's honestly everywhere....
In the dead of night, I now say that it was fun while it was here and I want it back.
I apologize for the bullying. kinda.

General Anyone else miss this sort of space station 13 rounds?
I played as the geneticist, first thing I did once I got off the arrival shuttle was to get a warm cup of coffee off the coffeemate before making my way to the medbay, saying hi to anyone I bump into along the way, be it stranger or familiar faces. I saw the captain in the bridge busy staring at the console screen, security chilling in the hallway, clown squeaking about making crayon art, a MULE bot slowly making its way to its destination with a sealed crate on top of it and the distant sounds of a RIPLEY footstep echoing further down the hallway.
Once in my workplace, I started getting to work trying to make a super soldier out of a monkey after having turned it into a human and running all sorts of unethical experiment on it. From the windows, I could catch glimpses of the CMO and their doctors busy wheeling a dismembered engineer off to the surgical room as he gasped for air.
On the crew manifest at this point of the shift, there were over 60 crewmembers in total.
Then suddenly, the station switched to Blue alert, nobody knows why (this is back when the station's alert is green by default). Some of us asked over the radio on what's going on, but we get vague answers, some say that a corpse was discovered, then there were talks about a syndicate infiltrator on board, or a rampaging wizard. Then came the faint booming sound of explosions rocking the station, people started panicking a bit over the radio.
I on the other hand tried to ease my worry by getting myself some food and cigarette at the bar after having turned my monkey test subject into a telekinetic vacuum resistant hulk.
Fast forward a few minutes later, I found myself walking through the corridor now splattered with blood and the dismembered or disfigured corpses of the crew, many of whom I just met and talked with not long after I got off the arrival shuttle. The lights were all flashing red as the alert level was escalated to red.
Even to this point, I, along with perhaps half of the station that were still alive still couldn't quite identify what are the threats. On the radio, people were scared and screaming, begging for Centcomm to send the emergency shuttle.
I return to the medbay to find every single medical staff scattered and dead, a patient I saw earlier having been turned into a pile of bones and ashes on the very same roller bed that he was brought in with.
Soon, the emergency shuttle was called and the HoP announced that the captain is dead and asked for everyone to gather in the evacuation wing.
I made myself there to find what's left of the station crew, all battered and nervous, barely a quarter of the number that was present at the start of the shift. The remnants of the security team, now in full armor and armed with lethal weapons started to set up a defensive barricade. The shuttle was a few minutes out at this point.
Things were quiet for the moment as we waited nervously, and as soon as the shuttle docked and we were about to sigh in relief, the maintenance airlock nearby burst open. From the darkness, emerges a cyborg with humanoid frame. I stood confused along with a few other civilians.
The security officers wasted no time, they started frantically opening fire on the borg who shrugged off the bullets with ease as it casually drew a pulse rifle, pulverizing the security forces in under a minute before turning the gun on the civvies.
We all started screaming as we tried to cram our way into the shuttle, the borg casually picking us off one at a time from the windows. We managed to weld the airlocks shut as soon as we enter, buying us just enough time for the shuttle to take off and escape the station.
As soon as the shuttle entered bluespace, we all sighed in relief when suddenly, an inconspicuous backpack laying on the floor beeped once before exploding, immediately gibbing half of the passengers and hurling the rest into vacuum, I was among them. At this point, only the handful who managed to hack their way into the shuttle cockpit managed to reach Centcomm in one piece. Thus end a round.
Then came the next round, it rolled into an Extended round. A short respite from the chaos that we all just endured which will inevitably happen again.
This was the experience I remember fondly when I started playing SS13 back around 2012, this was on a server that pride itself a medium to heavy roleplay too. Back then, even for M/HRP, people were mostly chill and doesn't take the game very seriously, most players did have a static or two, but weren't overtly attached, every round had a varied level of chaos and players often played knowing that there's a very high probability that they're going to die horribly, but that's all part of the fun.
I've been seeking this same experience on the present servers we have on the hub, but somehow none of them quite scratch the itch.
They're either HRP snoozefest, a furry ERP sexden, or a No or Low RP minmax fragger server. Maybe the experience I crave is too specific, it's like the middle ground of every of the servers above.

General The Escalation Paradox
When it comes to escalating as an antag or doing something that involves murder, as many rulesets require. There's many ways people do this but I'm curious on how others do it. There's some antags like nukies/wizard that don't really require it since anyone will kill them on sight. But this is moreso for ones like traitor.
How do you usually play your antags? Discuss.

/tg/ Help on making kudzu
Im trying to make kudzu on tgstation but I suck ass at botany so I need some help.
Currently I'm puting 20u of sugar into empty trays, then I wait like 20 minutes untill some of them get a weed level of 8/9 and then I put unstable mutagen and hope kudzu grows.
Is there a better / faster way on growing kudzu? Most of the times some random mushrooms grow from unstable mutagen instead and it makes me want to cry.

General Idea for another race:
The trogs.
The trogs are a newly discovered species of ape-like humanoids that strongly resemble Earth's chimpanzees; however, they have less hair, are taller, and are less lanky.
Traits:
Trogs are similar to the Yowies, which are sometimes observed on stations; however, there are some differences.
-Trogs cannot wear shoes or gloves due to their thick and spindly hands.
-Trogs have 3 extra slots to put things in their pockets; however, using 1 of these slots will slow it down slightly, and using the other will slow it down even more.
-Trogs deal more unarmed damage than most creatures due to their strength.
-Trogs drag things faster
-Trogs are better at throwing things
-Trogs don't eat meat, but it only has a slight ill effect on them.
-Allowed to have command roles due to how evolutionarily close to men they are, but don't expect anyone to take you even remotely seriously, and you may or may not get fired at the drop of a hat.
-Can talk to feral monkeys and understand their language
-Not very good with guns
-Gets hungry faster
-Otherwise, they are pretty similar to humans; they even have the same blood.
Roleplay:
Get laughed at by literally everyone, unless you are a clown, then nobody finds even your most hilarious pranks funny. Get fired and blow your account drinking at the bar. Save the station and get ignored. Be the victim of a "Prank" involving knockout gas and a crowbar to the face. Lash out and get revenge, end up locked in Perma for the rest of the game. Get made fun of and called Harambe in the after-game chat.

Mason Miami If the older intent wheel for help/harm/grab/push is desirable how can I get this change started?
About two months ago I was talking about this and it seemed like most people agreed the older system was more desirable, in fact I don't play as much. Then I never really followed up on it, actually I don't know how to get started really.
I guess I'm looking for coders and codebases that want the change. It seems like TG is a good starting place things generally get changed on TG and then seem to trickle out to a lot of other TG based or TG compatible codebases. Why not become a coder? I don't have time and the combat code is too complex for a person learning code to mod at the level I'm asking.
I feel like I'm asking for a change that most of us want. I ran a earlier topic over this(it's already linked in above text.) and generally people responded in the positive for this change so I'll feel a little weird if opinions changed or different people weigh in because they weren't participating 2 months ago so just be chill if you're explaining that we can work together over this if you're chill.

General All 18+ servers should be privatized off the HUB due to its easy accessibility to minors.
I don’t really know how to deal with the current issue of minors already accessing the servers, this is just a bandaid I guess.
